Pirates No Longer Interested In Braves LaRoche

Featured Replies

The Pirates finally are turning seriously toward options other than Atlanta's Adam LaRoche for their coveted left-handed power bat, two sources said yesterday. That does not mean LaRoche is out of their sights, the sources said. Rather, it is a sign that neither the Pirates nor Braves are budging much from their positions to make a trade and that, with spring training a month away, time is ticking for Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield to add what is seen as an essential piece. "Pittsburgh still wants to make that trade," one of the sources said. "But you wonder how long they can afford to wait."

I wonder if any of those options could include the Marlins and Mike Jacobs?! It would be very interesting. I would not be opposed to trading 1B Mike Jacobs, SP Sergio Mitre, RP Randy Messenger, and either P Yusmeiro Petit or P Jose Garcia for CP Mike Gonzalez and 1B/OF Xavier Nady.

Another thing I wanted to add. I think the Marlins have a very interesting strategy in affect right now. Have you noticed who the Marlins are signing to minor league deals? Just in case you did not know, here's the lsit.

RP Nate Field

RP Eddy Rodriguez

SP Chris George

RP Mike Koplove

SP Wes Obermueller

RP Felix Rodriguez

RP Jimmy Serrano

And soon to be added to the list: RP Antonio Alfonseca

All of these guys are quality veteran pitchers who could be part of several major league bullpens. You think the Marlins may have something up their sleeves with all these signings?

I would love to do jacobs for Gonzalez then flip Gonzalez and a prospect for Upton. Since TB has been rumored to want Gonzalez.

nice idea man!! i like that

id love to send jake, petit, messenger, petit for gonzalez and nady. I'd rather hold on to Gonzalez though. At this point messenger, mitre are worthless with a real closer, and petit's future is questionable. Nady would be fine at 1b. I'd love to see us ship some of our lesser arms for some real talent. I also wouldn't mind if we'd get a CF from them and move Willy to first. I'd be fine with Cody in LF and with giving Carroll a shot in ST. And who knows maybe a miracle would occur and Stokes will have a healty year and bust out. While I do like the crop op ST invitees, chances only a few of them can stick. But with a pen of gonzalez, tank, owens, gregg, pinto, and Alfonseca/Koplove/Rodriguez id be happy. Bottom Line: I like our options with this trade.

It's pretty much the same deal we've run with the pen for the past few years. Get a bunch of unsigned vets and hope a couple stick.

what?

I cant wait to hear this one. Its a bunch of low risk, high reward signings. Teams do them every winter. Big deal.

Besides Koplove and Felix Rodriguez....I don't like any of the scrubs they've signed for the bullpen.

I'm not even big on Koplove. It's just a bunch of ST invites again, hoping to actually have a half decent pen this year. I like a couple of the arms that came over in trades, and Felix Rodriguez is exciting.
