April 9, 200719 yr it's official boys and girls, hampton's 2007 season is finished, as i suspected since that report the other day about his elbow. Hampton to have surgery, miss season Braves left-hander to undergo another procedure on elbow By Mark Bowman / MLB.com ATLANTA -- Braves left-handed pitcher Mike Hampton needs additional surgery on his left elbow and will be forced to miss his second consecutive season. During an examination in New York City on Monday, Dr. David Altchek determined that Hampton has a torn flexor tendon that he will attempt to repair during a Tuesday morning surgery. The Braves say that Hampton won't be able resume pitching activities for another six to nine months. Hampton missed all of the 2006 season while recovering from the Tommy John surgery that Altchek performed on Sept. 25, 2005. The elbow ligament transplant surgical procedure usually requires at least 12 months of rehab. But Hampton, who has made just 12 starts since the end of the 2004 season, never regained full comfort over the past couple of weeks. He was plagued with some discomfort during Spring Training and incurred some elbow inflammation after throwing a simulated inning on April 1. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnered=rss_atl i think his career is pretty much over now, unless he wants to dh for an al team. at least we signed redman just in case this happened, so we have six pitchers we can go to, so this nulls out effect, expect for that huge contract we still owe him.
April 9, 200719 yr Well he certainly has to be mentioned when you discuss the worst contracts in MLB history. I remember he was one of the highest paid players on our payroll not too long ago.
April 9, 200719 yr Yes, he certainly has been a waste of money since he left the Astros some years ago.

April 9, 200719 yr It's a shame to see this guy suffer so much, even though he is a Brave I wish him the best of luck in his recovery.
April 9, 200719 yr I feel bad for him..two straight years out of baseball. But I think he'll be fine, with that contract..
April 10, 200719 yr I feel bad for him..two straight years out of baseball. But I think he'll be fine, with that contract.. The guy's a multimillionaire. No way you should feel bad for him.

I think a lot of professional athletes will tell you that they value their health over money, and not in that lovey dovey peace on earth way, in that "damn, I wish I could still walk or use my left arm" way. And for that I think Hampton deserves well wishes, consecutive surgeries on the same area is generally not a good thing.
April 10, 200719 yr Swift nailed it. Even if you don't care about Hampton or the Braves he at least deserves success in his surgery and rehab. Even with technology the way it is today, especially when it comes to surgery basically any procedure you have done is going to have complications. I had several surgeries on my knee to repair some severe ligament and other damage and I am virtually guaranteed to have medium to severe arthritis in it when I am older.
April 10, 200719 yr Hampton's just like Wood or Prior....he should really just move to the pen or call it quits.

Hey, while I wish him a full recovery and hope he can pitch well again, I certainly don't feel bad for the guy.
April 10, 200719 yr the guy was a hell of a pitcher for a while. Heck of an athlete for that matter. We're comin' for ya Atlanta!
April 10, 200719 yr Hampton's just like Wood or Prior....he should really just move to the pen or call it quits. He at least had a career, unlike Mark Prior. Wood faired a little bit better, but not by much. He has never been the same since the surgery after his rookie season. His best bet at this point is the bullpen. Hampton should just retire at this point. It's very unlikely that even once he comes back from another arm surgery, that he will be anywhere near as good as he used to be. See above mentioned Cubs players.
April 10, 200719 yr Author actually, i think we should convert hampton to first base (at least that's what one suggested, unless it's a mike piazza disaster), because look at his hitting stats. .242/15/63 in 664 at bats (that's a bit over a season's worth of ab's), that's pretty decent numbers. benching thorman for hampton doesn't look that bad, and would give his career some new life. i personally think his days of pitching are over.
April 10, 200719 yr 10 of the HR, and 21 of his RBIs came while he played with Colorado. I personally don't think he could cut it as a non-pitcher.
