All the Mitre haters out there, I have a question. With Anibal in AAA, and JJ on the DL, who are you going to use?

 

Just because Anibal's in AAA doesn't mean he should be there, or is less than deserving of the spot.

 

We know if Mitre had options left, it'd probably be him down there.

 

Yea. Right. We need a guy like Anibal right now. It just makes the games so much more interesting when we put up a pitcher that walks more guys than he Ks and has hitters going .341 vs him. I just love watching my pitcher getting the count to 0-2 and then walking that guy or letting him get a hit. But he tossed a no-no last year so he is a GOD.

 

Wait, are you also talking about our two "aces" who have ERA's north of 5 and BAA's of .300 or better? Because I'm not quite sure who you're talking about when you talk about that guy who gets ahead 0-2 and then screws up.

I may go postal if this 13 pitcher crap continues for more than a couple of days. I mean we are stupid in that we dont use our bench as it is anyway, but still.

I'm almost sure it will be utilized more when Hermida and Aza return.

so baring any injuries what is the point of earning that coveted opening day start? or shape your rotation to face their top starters? I know it does not work every time you face an oposing team because of days off and injuries and whatnot but thats what you want when you face an oponent, your top starters.

Why would I foget 2006 when that's what we were debating? Anyway, like you said, it doesn't work out every time because of days off and injuries. Your number in the order really means nothing. You could be a 2 but pitch like a 5 or a 4 and pitch like a 1.

I don't know why people keep saying that if Mitre had options left he'd be in the minors. Remember, the Marlins think high enough of him that they slotted him as our #2 starter at the beginning of last season, before he got hurt!!!

Come on, do you really think anyone in the organization considered Mitre a #2 caliber MLB starter in April '06? He's a borderline #5 starter. It looks like now he'll get a few starts to show what he can do. I would be pleasantly surprised if he averages 6 innings per start with an ERA in the mid 4's.

I don't know that he deserves that harsh of a judgement, being called a borderline 5th starter. The guys never had a chance to show what he can do. The most starts he's ever made in a major league season is 9, and that was when he was with the Cubs. Last year, he only got 7 starts before being injured and getting moved to the pen.

I think that Mitre has the ability to become a solid #3 guy. However, his talents may be better suited for a top-tier defensive club, based on his tendency to induce groundballs. It's very encouraging to me that so far this year he has a groundball/flyball ratio of 4.00. However, when you're inducing that many groundballs, you have to have a solid defense behind you. That's why he lost his first start this season. Plus the fact that he's received the least run support out of any of our starters.

I know you feel bad for the kid. But he has a 2.06 WHIP, he's striking out like 4.4/9IP, has a 19/14 BB/K ratio, and only has a low ERA out of pure luck. Seriously he earned the benefit of the doubt last year, but he's lost the ability to make outs this year. Sure it sucks that sending him down was more about making sure Julio gets back up here, but if you've got a problem with that don't make it seem like you are worried about Anibal's well being. He'll be fine if he can figure out whats wrong.

Back to my Mitre kick: Building on the fact that he's only gotten to start about 7 games every year in the majors, I'm making the argument that if given the chance to start for a full season, he will have a decent stat-line.

 

There are some pitchers who traditionally pitch well at the beginning of the season, i.e. Willis. There are others who traditionally start slower. Olsen's first 7 starts last season: 2-3, 6.55 ERA. His first 6 starts this season: 3-1, 5.63 ERA.

 

Maybe Mitre is an Olsen-type player who starts slow at the beginning of the season. Mitre's first 7 starts in '05 with the Cubs: 2-3, 5.19 ERA. His first 6 starts last season: 1-4, 4.89 ERA.

 

The problem is, he's never had the opportunity to pitch past the first part of the season, for anyone to tell if he will progressively get better like Olsen did last season, and like he seems to be doing this season.

I can't believe people are so opposed to Sanchez getting demoted. This guy has amazing talent but he wasn't pitching anywhere close to his level and need to get back to that in the minors. Mitre isn't gonna be an ace of the staff but he is going to provide a number of solid starts where he can go deep into games, whereas Sanchez was flirting with disaster every start. Sanchez getting sent down wasn't just best for the team, its best for him as a player because he is not pitching at a major league level and needs to refine his pitching against lesser competition with less pressure on him.

Not a good comparision, Rick Ankiel's problems were in his mind. He deflated from the pressure of pitching in the postseason, and when he got sent back to the minors it just made his physch worse. Anibal has shown that he has a lot of mental toughness (First career start at Yankee stadium, outdueling Roger Clemens, no-hitter, ect. ect.), so I really doubt it will effect him negatively.

Mitre had a pretty solid outing tonight, for what it's worth.

Anibal is not a major league staple yet. Sure, he did fine last year, but he hasn't afforded himself the status of being untouchable on our roster when most everyone reached a consensus that he wasn't himself on the mound.
