well i am now going to be a Senior in highschool and thinking about buying myself a laptop. I am working a full time job over the summer and making a good amount of money so i can save for the future and buy a little present for myself over the summer. since my parents will be buying me a sick laptop for college i dont really want to spend all that much. i am in the range of spending $550 to no more then $700 on a laptop. I have looked at dell and gateway so far but i am not really familiar with laptops at all since i have never had one. any ideas would be great

i picked up a Sony Vaio the other day for under $700 at Circuit City, hell of a computer!

I'm hoping to get a Mac this summer...but they're $1000. I'm gonna look on ebay and see what they have there.

I wouldn't either. You can buy new, unopened, in the package computers off of ebay and you can get a pretty good deal on them.

ya, I've had a compaq before. It was nice, but it got murdered by a virus.

I've really enjoyed the last 2 Gateway's I have owned. Plus they offer North America customer service and tech support. My current one is http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529664605.php

I've really enjoyed it so far and Vista runs great on it.

that's reaallly nice.

so the computer you are buying is for college or just for the sr. year of high school? if the parents are going to buy you a nice computer next year on top of the one you are getting now, i would personally wait a year and use the money for something else.

Do you really need to spend money on a laptop for one year when you're guaranteed one the following year?

I understand that. this is where i have my problem. I have a Dell inspiration 8400. Great computer with a nice big flat lcd screen. the computer is almost 3 years old. i feel the computer slowing up and the computer has had viruses in the past and in my opinion it cannot make it until august 2009 which is when i go to college. i thought ab getting a external hard drive and transfering all my music onto it and then totally clearing my hard drive on the dell but im not sure if i should or if its even worth it. i want a laptop so bad as well.

okay, so college is in two years...more reasonable.

its really not worth purchasing a laptop for under $1200 these days. If you really need one, go with ebay, try looking for a dell inspiron e1505, they are a good bargain. But dont expect any of the new processors, the new santa rosa platform, a dedicated graphics card, more than a gig of ram, and a decent hardrive.

I just bought a brand new hp dv 6000 for 600 bucks with a printer. Check out circuitcity they have good prices and good selections. I love my new hp, I had a very hard time with my last toshiba laptop. There customer service sucks and my lcd screen broke like 2 weeks after the warranty expired and they tried to con me into giving them 500 dollars for a new screen so I switched to my HP.

If you are planning to run Vista, don't get anything with less than 2GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo proccessor.

Anything less is just waisting your money and setting yourself up for a hard time down the road.

I suggested that one to him. Ive never heard of the brand but the components in it are very good for the price.

We leave for college august of 08 not 09, unless he plans on getting held back? lol just playing

if this is for one year, i would rather just get a second hard drive to the current computer you have (i would get an external) and use that as your main drive away from your "virus infected" harddrive. and you can use that external when you get your notebook as a backup as well, so don't think it's wasting your time. it's not that hard, and i can walk you through if you want.

Sounds like a great deal. Any warranty?

He wont have that much. He was adament about spending less then 600+shipping. So thats way out of his price range.

Now the computer on the other hand sounds very good. Ive heard good things about the new Santa Rosa Processor.
