June 9, 200717 yr i think when Jacobs comes back, they put him in the 5th spot. Boone does know how to work a walk and him being on base is always key to us. He deffinately deserves to stay in that lineup though.
June 9, 200717 yr When Jacobs comes back I'd like to see Hermida move up in the order. He is an OBP machine and born for the #2 spot. Uggla is a run producer, not a huge OBP guy, so I'd like to see him in the 5 spot. The other advantage of moving Hermida up is to space the two lefty bats in the lineup. If we are dead set on keeping Hanley in the 3 spot, which it looks like we are...I'd love to see a lineup like this: 1. CF mehhhhhhh 2. Hermida 3. Hanley 4. Cabs 5. Uggla 6. Willingham 7. Jacobs 8. Treanor Like you said, Jacobs give us some value and power in the 7 spot, but I still want to see Hanley batting leadoff again and have Willingham in the 3 spot, but whatever. If this is the "thinking out loud" thread, I really, really want Treanor starting at catcher, unless we are facing a LHP. If both of our catchers are going to suck offensively, at least give me the one who is noticeably better defensively and handling the pitching staff.
June 9, 200717 yr Boone was brought here with the understanding that he would be a bat off the bench/utility player/semi-platoon first baseman. Jacobs was told that the starting job was his. This will not change once Jacobs is healthy. He will be plugged right back into the lineup. If he struggles after then, he may then lose PT to Boone, but until then, Boone will continue to be a utility infielder.
June 9, 200717 yr I guess since this is think out loud I'll put how my lineup would be (assuming that Jacobs gets in there instead of Boone) 1) Hanley 2) Hermida 3) Uggla 4) Cabrera 5) Willingham 6) Amezaga 7) Jacobs 8) Treanor I put Alfredo in front of Jacobs for a few reasons. The big one being that I don't like bunching power hitters who struggle with contact at times all in a row. The other being that Jacobs gives the bottom of the order some pop. Though I think we seem intent on keeping Hanley hitting third, so that throws my lineup out the window. lol
June 9, 200717 yr I think we definitely need to keep Cabs and Hammer batting back to back. Hammer is doing a good job protecting Cabs, and when they choose give Cabs the pass and pitch to Willingham, he is making them pay. Cabs has 43 RBI's on the year, and Hammer is backing him up with a solid 45 RBI's.
June 9, 200717 yr I remember reading something, with regards to Jacobs' injury, that implied that Hanley was moved to the third spot to make up for the loss of Jacobs' bat, and would move back to lead off once Jacobs is healthy. I'll see if I can find it again. Now ofcoarse it's not words out of the horses mouth, just implied in an article. But it does make sense, and I would think that's what will happen. Expecially considering how Reggie has done. Fredo has done well, offensive wise. I don't remember the exact number but he has a high .300 OBP since going to the leadoff spot. But his past shows he won't put up those numbers against Lefties, and Reggie's present shows he can't either.

Ted Lilly, JP Howell, Chuck James, etc. Obviously Alfredo wouldn't be much better but Reggie needs to see some fastballs in the 90s, not a bunch of junk being thrown at him.
June 10, 200717 yr Also, since two 2x4s and some chicken wire from home depot could stop more baseballs from rolling way than Miguel Olivo could ever dream of, another radical idea would be to let Willingham catch. LMAO!!!!! sooooo true Hermida didnt look too bad in CF last year, and im hoping that Miggy is back on the bike again and trimming down a little more. If he can go back to looking the way he did in 2004 - 2005 it would really help him out. He always had pop in the bat so i dont ever see it being a problem.

June 10, 200717 yr So, I have been wondering about the lineup more and more, and after last night, I think the question really needs to be asked. What do we do with Mike Jacobs? Aaron Boone's shown his bat absolutely belongs in the lineup everyday. He's solid defensively at first (something that cannot be said of Jake) and he is one of four players on our team who can work a walk. Also, if we're going to continue to bat Hanley 3rd, Boone suits our lineup better than Jacobs. If Jacobs' return means Miggy goes back to 3 and Hanley leadoff, then this is moot. Thoughts? Hanley Ramirez just has to go back to leading off. I feel at this point we are not better off having Amezaga/Abercrombie leading off
June 10, 200717 yr Didnt think Id say this before the season but Boone > Jake day in and day out. Jake goes on tears but in the long haul I want Boone over him.
June 10, 200717 yr Didnt think Id say this before the season but Boone > Jake day in and day out. Jake goes on tears but in the long haul I want Boone over him. Based on what though?? That doesn't make sense.
June 10, 200717 yr Didnt think Id say this before the season but Boone > Jake day in and day out. Jake goes on tears but in the long haul I want Boone over him. Based on what though?? That doesn't make sense. Are you implying that the sample size we have seen from Boone is too small? I'm fine with that. But if Boone maintains consistent production I'll take him over Jake in a heartbeat. On defense Boone has an edge as well.
June 10, 200717 yr Jacobs starts. Boone will still see plenty of ABs. Do you think Jacobs starts in this current lineup (meaning 7th)? Or do you think we see a lineup reshuffle where Jake gets to go back to the heart of the order? That's a tough one. In my opinion Jake was hitting better than last year before he got hurt. I don't know the stats but in watching him, he was seeming to hit lefties better as well which seemed to be his Achilles heel last year. I think he is in the same boat as Hermida in that he is young and has been nagged with injuries and we really don't know yet how good he can be. Good question though.

June 10, 200717 yr Author Didnt think Id say this before the season but Boone > Jake day in and day out. Jake goes on tears but in the long haul I want Boone over him. Based on what though?? That doesn't make sense. There's plenty to point to. Boone's got a large sample size, has shown an ability to take a walk and has only K'd over 100 times in a season twice, Jacobs, so far, is on pace to K over 100 times in his first two seasons. FWIW, I want Jacobs back in the lineup, but there's a heck of a lot to be said for Boone deserving to stay.
June 11, 200717 yr I'd be curious to try Boone at third, Jacobs at first, and Cabrera/Willingham/Hermida in the outfield somehow. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
