June 10, 200719 yr This is my list of the greatest sports movies of all time. #5 To me, growing up as a white kid playing basketball against all black kids who were stronger,faster and better than me in basketball, Woody Harrelson was my hero. Just a cool movie altogether. I loved the dialogue and constant trash talking. I wasn't anywhere near as good as Woody, but I could still relate to the story. #4 The romantic comedy hiding itself as a sports movie. Excellent performance by Tom Cruise, who I hope is remembered for the great roles he has had. And Rod Tidwell is probably one of the most realistic sports characters in a movie ever. Did a great job highlighting the true greed and selfishness that rules professional sports today. #3 What sport could possibly be more fun when you were a child than taking a baseball,bat, glove and as many neighborhood kids you could find to an empty field and just hitting baseballs? #2 James Earl Jones "baseball has stood the test of time" speech is one of the greatest monologues in any movie, ever. This is more than just a sports movie it is a great father-son relationship character movie, and a brilliant story. I love this movie and probably in my top 10 favorite of all time. #1 I live my life based on this movie. The true underdog story. The moral of the story: Hard work and an Iron Will can overcome a lack of talent in any area of your life. I get goose bumps during this movie every 5 minutes it seems like. Ah come on, Adrian, it's true. I was nobody. But that don't matter either, you know? 'Cause I was thinkin', it really don't matter if I lose this fight. It really don't matter if this guy opens my head, either. 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.
June 10, 200719 yr If Caddyshack counts, that deserves a spot. And Sandlot's #1 for me, nothing embodies the essence of a sport more than that.
June 10, 200719 yr Sandlot probably #1 from me aswell. I watched it for the first time in YEARS (Decade+) when it was on, I think it was Fox Family, about a year ago. Forgot just how good that movie was. Field of Dreams #2 Ton of others that could easily fill he 3-5 holes. Major League and Bull Durham, just to throw out a couple more that the original poster didn't say.

It gives me chills every time I watch it. "Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come."
June 10, 200719 yr Good call on Seabiscuit. So underrated. I just never think about it. Better book but a very good movie.
June 10, 200719 yr 1. On the Waterfront 2. Raging Bull 3. Field of Dreams 4. The Cincinnati Kid 5. The Set-up 6. Rudy 7. Breaking Away I guess it's debatable whether On the Waterfront and The Cincinnati Kid are sports movies. One is about an ex-boxer and the other about poker.

I wasn't anywhere near as good as Woody, but I could still relate to the story. i love that movie for the story but to be honest Woody Harrelson's character annoyed me so much. he was so damn stubborn especially at the end when he bet all the money he NEEDED to prove he could dunk even though he knew he couldnt.
June 11, 200719 yr Sandlot is my number one. Nothing else captures the unhinged joy and unpredictable-ness of young summers. Even if all you are doing is playing baseball and going to the pool everyday, you never know what will happen, and when you are young, anything can happen. IT's the epitome of the perfect sport movie. Jerry Maguire is very good, and I might consider it a sports movie. I'd consider that movie to be great if not for Renee Zelwegger. I cannot stand her. June 11, 200719 yr I can't believe so many people don't like The Natural It's a billion times better book. After you read the book, you can't look at the movie the same way.
