FLA: Scott Olsen, LHP (6-7, 5.23)

A stiff upper back, or back spasms, led to Olsen turning in the shortest start of his career his final time out before the break. The lefty worked one inning at Los Angeles before exiting with his back ailment, yielding three runs on five hits. His velocity was way down -- mid 80s -- which raised concerns. Olsen had worked at least six innings in his four previous starts before his setback at Dodger Stadium. The lefty has thrown 103 1/3 innings, second most on the Marlins.

 

WAS: Jason Simontacchi, RHP (6-6, 6.11)

Although Simontacchi gave up three home runs in his last start against the Brewers, manager Manny Acta went so far as to say that Simontacchi pitched one of his best games of the season. Simontacchi's fastball was clocked at 93 mph, a season high. His ERA doesn't tell the whole story of his season. With the exception of three starts in which he gave up a combined 21 runs, Simontacchi has pitched well during his comeback year.

 

 

Florida will look to capture its first home series in seven tries when it takes on Washington in Sunday's rubber match.

 

The Marlins' struggles at Dolphin Stadium have been equally well-documented and baffling -- Florida hasn't won a home series since taking two of three from Philadelphia from May 22-24 and is 6-14 at home since that series.

 

Scott Olsen will look to deliver the win for the Marlins as he takes the mound for the first time since back spasms forced him out of his June 8 start after one inning -- the earliest departure of his career. The left-hander has been receiving heat treatment on his back since then and has been unhampered throwing in the bullpen.

 

"All systems are go," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday.

 

Washington will counter with Jason Simontacchi, who's 1-0 with a 3.85 ERA in two career starts against the Marlins. His victory came on May 13, when he allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to outduel Wes Obermueller.
