August 25, 200718 yr Gardner has solidified his position in the bullpen, he has been very stable and productive.

Nah, the rumor is the Rangers need a lights out closer, so we are trading him there in exchange for Michael Young. Not interested. However, they have a PBC born and raised catcher that really intrigues me. A rookie with a bat in Cooperstown. Yea, I know. It's a dream. But it's my dream and I'm sticking to it.

He becomes a free agent after the 2012 season, given we actually keep him up at the majors that long. Considering that 1) He's pitching way over his head and 2) he's already 32 years old, I think it's safe to say he won't be around that long.

August 25, 200718 yr pitching lights out right now lol, if he continues to pitch like this u never know for next year.
August 25, 200718 yr Will he be out of options after this year? I really don't know sh*t about how option years work.
August 25, 200718 yr We might as well keep him for next year, unless we have no spots left in the bullpen, which I don't really seeing happening. He certainly hasn't been our worst reliever, and I don't see the bullpen changing that much.

I really don't know sh*t about how option years work. To expand on this, Dontrelle, Olsen, Mitre, Nolasco, Vanden Hurk, Gregg, Owens, Lindstrom, Tank, Pinto, Kensing, C. Martinez, and to lesser extents Barone, Zarate, and H. Garcia. There is also G. Hernandez, Volstad, and health permitting, Anibal and J. Garcia. 19 potential names to fill 12 spots, all with contracts or option years. Gardner is certainly expendable as is, but now to the main point, (and let's include Miller too), with option language. * A player may be eligible for a fourth option year if he has been optioned in three seasons but does not yet have five full seasons of professional experience. A full season is defined as being on an active pro roster for at least 90 days in a season. (If a player is put on the disabled list after earning 60 or more days of service in a single season, his time on the DL is counted.) [/i] By this clause in option language, I believe Gardner and Miller are both 'protected' from a front office perspective, and we'll be able to option them back and forth in 2008 without worry of losing them. Gardner had options years in 2002, 2005, and 2007, Miller in 2002, 2004 (I believe this year falls under a separate clause which stats an option year is not used if a pitcher is in the minors for under 20 days, where Miller played in 3 games that season, so this year probably does not count), 2005, and 2007. Neither has 5 years of pro experience. This is key because it means we can keep both of them and not guarantee 25 man roster spots, i.e. Contracts. That's important because we should not be guaranteeing any MLB contracts to anyone on our pitching staff (besides Dontrelle and Gregg) because who knows which other 10 will emerge in camp as the next best options. Miller and Gardner aren't in the position to be handed a spot, despite their very productive 2007 seasons (thus far). The negative (or if I'm confused/wrong by the language), if Miller or Gardner don't make the club out of spring training OR make the club, suck initially, and need to be replaced by another arm, they will have to be DFA'd where we'd lose them. Not a huge deal, but just saying. Of course, there is also the "Nate Field" contract, where the Marlins can simply offer them deals that specifically allow minor league assignments if they are out of options. I don't think Gardner or Miller would turn a deal like that down, since they are both club controlled as is and they both certainly want employment where it may not be guaranteed they'll make another team's bullpen if released. Might as well sign it and take care of business in spring training, with the added knowledge that the Marlins might reward their 2007 seasons in a close camp battle and pick the veteran over a young'en. That basically makes everything I typed above about, do they have an option year?, irrelevant, but it's just another avenue the Marlins can go down to keep these players and increase 25 man roster flexibility for 2008. We have one more year before the 40 man roster is going to explode with prospects, so we aren't hurt there either. I was inclined to think they were both out of options and both would get a non-tender/trade this fall as you and Ramp have alluded to based on contractual issues, but after investigating a little, I think they'll both be back in spring training at a minimum, and if this year was a fluke, we'll just send them to AAA if applicable by option year or contract, or just DFA/release them if it doesn't work out. This is really a non-issue, and it raises my current count to 21 pitchers in the organization for 2008, to fill 12 MLB spots. The Isotopes are going to have a nice staff next year.
August 26, 200718 yr We can still outright them once also, right? So that's another option to not lose them.

August 27, 200718 yr That was funny when he tried to beat out that throw today and landed on his face.
