this was probably expected but it doesnt suck any less...i look forward to seein him back next season

MIAMI -- Marlins reliever Henry Owens underwent surgery Thursday afternoon to repair a partial right rotator cuff tear.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Owens will not throw for six months, meaning he is unlikely to be ready for the opening of the 2008 season.

A hard-throwing right-hander, Owens was a key reliever for Florida early in the season.

For a while, the rookie assumed the club's closer role. In 22 games, he was 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He had four saves in five chances.

Owens went on the disabled list twice with shoulder problems. He was last placed on the DL on June 13 with shoulder inflammation.

Owens and reliever Matt Lindstrom were acquired from the Mets last November for pitchers Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick. Joe Frisaro is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

He ain't coming back till 2009. Well, Rotoworld thinks that.

I'm not expecting anything major next year.

His delivery was an accident waiting to happen.

It happened. Too bad, local kid makes good and all, but it doesn't by definition mean it's the end of his career. Sheesh, Pedro and Everyday Eddy pitched for years and years with partially torn rotator cuffs. It's a matter of conditioning and both have or are about to make it back with a lot more years of stress. He has a shot at pitching productively again, let's hope things go his way.

HEADS ROLL NOW

At least we're not gonna see the organization depend on a "plethora of young pitching depth". While I like Owens, Lindstrom, and Tank a lot, the performance of a lot of our young pitchers last year was overvalued, and none of them were elite-level talent, which the league is filled with in terms of young pitchers.
