Owens to See Dr. Andrews, surgery and out til next season

Featured Replies

Owens surgery? Reliever Henry Owens, on the disabled list since June 13 with right shoulder inflammation, will visit Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday.

Chances are Owens will need surgery, which could impact his availability in 2008.

Owens and Matt Lindstrom were acquired by the Marlins last November from the Mets.

Owens appeared in 22 games this season, and he was 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 22 games. He had four saves in five chances.

It's been an incredibly difficult season for the Florida pitchers. Already, projected starting pitchers Josh Johnson (Tommy John elbow ligament reconstruction) and Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) have undergone surgery.

The club is cautious about the health of Ricky Nolasco, who now is pitching for Triple-A Albuquerque, after serving two stints on the disabled list with right elbow soreness.

Nolasco on Friday had a rough outing for Albuquerque, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings to Memphis.

There is concern that Nolasco's arm still isn't right. If it's not, the right-hander faces the possibility of surgery.

On a positive note, lefty reliever Renyel Pinto continues to long toss as he recovers from a sore shoulder. Pinto is in line to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

This is the season from hell squared.

Seriously, why has no one been fired?

I've been calling for Kranitz' head for a while now...it's just out of control.

why dont they just shut down Nolasco AND SEND HIM TO A f***ING DOCTOR... seriously if he is going to need surgery I rather they find it out now than spring training next year. And hell if he needs surgery, so be it. its not like we're going to compete next year with sanchez and Johnson out.

Mr. Carlos Enrique Nolasco reports that he hasn't felt better in at least a full calendar year and that surgery is completely out of the equation.

He also said he would be back up here by Tuesday. That was 2 or 3 weeks ago. I mean, Sanchez also said he was feeling fine. Until AFTER he got sent down. From what I have read, Ricky's velocity hasn't been consistent. And he did get shelled his first start in AAA. Nothing against Mr. Carlos Enrique Nolasco, but I think concern about his health is well justified.

Some would say the main person responsible for all the pitchers injuries this year was fired at the end of last season. I'm not so certain myself, but it does have some legitimacy in the reasoning.

The whole medical staff needs to be fired! This is ridiculous how they've misdiagnosed injuries all season. De Aza you have a sprained ankle, oops I mean broken leg. Hey Boonie just has a sprain in his knee um uh I mean you need surgery on that knee. You're a pitcher with a sore are, lets rest it a week or two and then send you to the minors for rehab and then find out you need Tommy John on it. Seriously is the same medical staff that has been here through AJ Burnett's arm strain and Spooney's sore elbow, also both needed surgery?!? :banghead

Agreed. Last year we had so many players day to day that ended up being out of actions for weeks. How do you misdiagnose an ankle fracture and confuse it with a sprain? How do you not make this distinction until 2+ months after the original injury?

Seriously, why has no one been fired?

Concern is one thing, spreading rumors about needing surgery is another.

I don't think that is spreading any rumors. It's common sense. If his velocity still isn't consistent maybe he needs to be checked out a little deeper. I always feel that you have to be careful with what an athelete will tell you concerning his health. Ricky seems to be a very competitive guy and wants to play/help his team. He should be congratulated for that. But learn something from what has become the Sanchez Fiasco. Just the latest (for us) in a long list of other pitchers on all teams.

Most of you have been complaining you don't get any of the inside skinny of things (i.e. how Fredi handles his players behind closed doors). Now you get some and you want to complain about it? Be careful what you ask for, you may just get it. If something had been released just saying they are concerned about his velocity problems every one of you would be complaining they aren't being open enough with us, they are hiding some crucial information, jumping to every conclusion under the sun, and saying we have a God given right to know ALL the details.

I've also been asking for Kranitz's head. Bring back Wiley!

Kranitz needs to be canned, and so does the medical staff. Clean house.

And, yes, let's bring Wiley back. Maybe he can help bring back some of that D-Train magic.

Why do you guys think Kranitz got his job? (I'm not being sarcastic at all.) Do you think it was mainly due to his being "next in line" with the Cubs for so long and the fact that three of the guys that were supposed to be in last year's rotation (Willis, Mitre, Nolasco) all came out of the Cubs' system? Did his relationship with Girardi play a major role? Did he have someone else politicking for him?

Personally I can't see why he would be counted on any further. He served one rung below Admin Rothschild, the guy who has had stars such as Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have their health deteriorate for whatever reason. Now look at the health of the Marlins' staff this season. Something is wrong- the strength and conditioning program, healthcare, etc. for these guys simply MUST be lacking some fundamental aspect.

And he will have surgery...

Surgery for Owens: Reliever Henry Owens was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. Andrews will perform shoulder surgery on Thursday.

Owens has been on the DL since June 13 with right shoulder inflammation.

In an effort to keep his innings total down, the Giants are planning on skipping Tim Lincecum's next turn in the rotation.

Manager Bruce Bochy said rookie RHP Tim Lincecum likely will have his next turn in the rotation skipped as a precaution -- and the other starters will likely have one or two extra days between outings after Thursday's off day. "We may make an adjustment," Bochy said. "We're talking about it now." A six-man rotation for September also is a possibility.

Can I get an AMEN to the Marlins coming up with a way to limit Vanden Hurk and G. Hernandez's innings here on out. I'm not even worried about Nolasco, Owens, Kensing, C. Mart, etc, here. Can we do a little PREVENTATIVE training for once? That the rest of baseball has seemed to adopt.
