Attendance Limbo

Why don't the Marlins play these games in Jupiter? They really should have just moved the whole series up there. They'd probably draw more fans and it would give a chance for Palm Beach residents to watch the team.

Roger Dean Stadium only holds 7,000. Marlins haven't drawn below 10,000 this year.

Didn't you see the picture ?

They still sold 10,000 tickets for the game.

If that picture doesn't move MLB to do something about this franchise, nothing is ever going to do it. That is truly pathetic, even for South Florida. But as much as people here on the board & elsewhere want to bash the Miami-Dade fans of the Marlins, I believe you have to bash the Broward County fans even more.

That stadium is much more viable for someone living in Weston, Pembroke Pines or even Coral Springs to get to, than someone that lives in Coral Gables or Kendall.

Great picture

$10 says this picture is in ESPN magazine next time. either in the front or at the back with the 0:01 clock on top left.

think anyone on the team will sign this pic. if i asked for an autograph

PLEASE try to get Loria or Samson to sign it. Don't make a player do it, that is just rubbing salt into the wounds. Samson or Loria it would be freakin' hilarious. :thumbup

There really isn't a reason to go, especially on the weekends with football.

Exactly why baseball will never thrive in this town. Football is, and always will be king. No matter how bad the Dolphins are and how good the Marlins are.

It's sad but true.

And what's even more sad is it's not even a good football town.

It used to be. Until everyone left. :confused

So are you trying to say there are no homes, cities, or apartment complexes between the stadium and Coral Gables or Kendall? Just a big blank that is filled with traffic? Or seeing that I live in PBC I can say, "See? It's their fault not mine. It easier for them to get there than me."

No, you don't bash any 1 county more than the other. You bash the entire tri county population. And bash it soundly.

that's true. how many times have local tv stations had to buy up 1,000s of tickets so the game isn't blacked out by the nfl....

But there are a number of NFL teams that rarely have their games shown on local TV throughout the NFL. Oakland hasn't had a game on local TV in almost 8 years. Phoenix just had their 1st games on TV last year with the opening of the new stadium. The Cardinals had only a handful of sellouts since moving to Phoenix in more than 20 years. In the early 2000's San Diego went over 4 years without a sellout. Until three or four years ago when Cincinnati was still in its old stadium, the Bengals went more than a decade without a sellout.

The Dolphins have had 5 straight seasons out of the playoffs, yet have a season ticket base of about 63,000 this year, only 11,000 less than capacity, and 4,000 less than sellout threshold (club seats and luxury boxes don't count towards NFL sellout totals). For a team that has given so little to the locals for many years now, the Dolphins still do pretty good at the gate.

No. Actual attendance are the key words here. Get your calculator out and start adding up the attendance in that photo. 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 +... It won't take long.

But Roger Dean would mean that tickets sold would show that every game is a sell out. Sounds nice. Just like saying there were 10K+ at that game Wed.

The original post was about moving games to Roger Dean to increase attendance (in other words sell more tickets).

Last I checked, 10,000 is greater than 7,000.

I don't think Miami is even a good football town. Sure, the Dolphins supposedly sell-out their games (just like there are supposedly 10,000 people at the baseball game in that photo), but ever notice how many empty seat there are when you watch the Dolphins games on TV? Tons.

A friend of mine is a big Dolphins fan and he never buys a ticket ahead of time and always ends up getting a club seat for less than $25. People can't give those Dolphins tickets away.

Miami is just not a big sports town the way some other cities are. Probably never will be.

It used to be, before it changed. Dolphins used to hold the season ticket record in the mid-1970's. But of course many people moved away, and others moved in from places that don't know about football or even baseball for that matter. Its dampened this as a sports town.

So let me ask you, it sounds like you don't support the Dolphins. Do you ? If not, why ? And why do you support the Marlins ?

There really isn't a reason to go, especially on the weekends with football.

Comparing apples and oranges, but you have a point, no matter how small. You could take the other way though by showing how some NFL teams have sold out for decades even when they did have no where teams, even worse that the Dolphins have been recently. Like Green Bay or Denver, to name just 2. Those type of cities have sell outs for pre season games. Season ticket waiting lists that are years long. Season ticket packages that are included in divorce agreements and in wills.

But I will say there hasn't been a blackout here in quite some time. No matter the reasons for it. And that is semi-commendable, given the drastic increases in ticket prices and parking fees.

Well, we're part of the people that aren't going. You can't say it's sad that nobody goes, when we don't go neither.

Who's "we"? I still go to the games...

So do I. When was the last time you went?

tuesday

lol same here. Hope you got your two free donuts and coffee at Dunkin Donuts

I was there. I've been to a bunch of Donut games but never get them. Do they keep your ticket or do you get to keep it?

i was at a sunday game last year after the firesale and it was like 98 degrees and it was the most boring 3 hours of my entire life, and i'm a gigantic baseball and marlins fan. besides the fact that the team was in the midst of a losing streak, the ingame entertainment was non existent.

i vowed never to go back to a day game, unless there is something there to watch.

I don't buy the weather argument. It's not like it's any cooler for 1pm Dolphins games in September, and the Dolphins somehow manage to draw more than 400 people.

Can't blame it all on the weather.

The difference is that if you want to go to a Dolphin game, you have a total of 8 chances, 7 this year, to go see them, and they are probably all at 1pm. On an average homestand, you'll have the same amount of chances to see the Marlins play within a week, with most of them being at 7:05pm.

Why go to the one extremely hot day game when you can just as easily, if not much more easily, go to a much cooler night game?

Actually only 4 are at 1pm this year. This Sunday against the Cowboys is a 4:05pm start.

I have little knowledge of how attendance figures are tabulated. The ESPN box score for the game indicates 10,000 fans, but clearly the picture says otherwise. Clearly the picture indicates otherwise assuming no fans showed up later.

10,000 is the paid attendance? Why is that expressed in the box score instead of the actual attendance? And where can the actual attendance figures be found?

A few years ago the National League did away with counting game tcikets, but started using paid attendace in the boxscores. As far as I know, there is no one that keeps tabs on actual attendance any longer.

And the last I checked there were no more than 400 at that game. 7,000 minus 400 that actually showed up still leaves 6,600 empty seats at Roger Dean. You can go on and on about how many tickets were sold. It dosen't matter. Ask the players if that matters. Ask the rest of the baseball world that is currently laughing out loud at us if that matters. What matters is how many showed up for a MLB game. Twist it any way you want. It is humiliating that you are even trying to make it an excuse. It isn't. I mean, 10K tickets sold for a MLB game is humiliating enough without trying to make that number sound like it is a good reason to keep a team here. But hey, if it makes you feel more rightous, then by all means continue on in that fantasy world. The rest of us, for the most part, are hanging our heads in shame.

the marlins baring the 1 st season really havent drawn well. 2nd football is different only 8 regular season home games and they usually fall on sunday(limited dates to watch nfl and most people dont work on sunday) , additionally the poster who stated dolphin games maybe listed as a sellout but they an awful lot of empty seats is correct.

That's because the Dolphins games are on TV. People just aren't willing to sit in the sun anymore. In the 1970's & 1980's I was a Dolphins season ticket holder and wouldn't have ever thought of missing a game, even if it was on TV. But people now are too pampered. :confused

Whether it is right or wrong I think is irrelevant. I would think they go by paid attendance because it is a more accurate way of calculating how much revenue a team brings in. Much more so than trying to show there is more interest in one team over another. But that's just a theory with holes in it.

Baseball's home schedule is substantially larger, the games go later, and unlike the other sports, the Marlins problem isn't that Miami won't, by and large show up, but that the 'residents' deem themselves fans of other teams. Partially because of displacement of the family, partially because of forged roots from Spring Training facilities that preexisted the Marlins (case in point, there are more Dodgers fans in Vero Beach than Marlins fans, and likely more Dodgers fans in Vero than there are Marlins fans in Fort Lauderdale).

That, and the bulk of the Marlins home-slate is played in the summer, AKA the "off-season" for South Florida, the Heat, Panthers and Dolphins play their home slate by and large "in season."

Sorry TSwift, but I have to call bullcrap on there being more Dodger fans in Ft Laud than Marlins fans. The Yankees did spring training there for years, so as usual in South Florida, its a NY team that rules the roost. No one outside of a few in Vero care about the Dodgers, and that will change after this coming year. The Dodgers are moving to Arizona for ST starting in 2009.

Reminds me of around this time in 2004, we had a double-header against the Expos. If we won both games we were still very much in the WC race, but some hurricane or other had blown through the week before, plus it was a weekday. The games had been quite hyped as make or break for the season and I distinctly remember the looks on the player's faces as they hit the field to an empty stadium. When Pavano threw the first pitch in game 1, I counted 250 people in the stands and it didn't pick up that much all day. It definitely affected their attitude and they played like crap. We lost both games and the season was done...

  • Author

Estimated 400 people in the stands today, only 200 or so around for the end of the game.

Believed to be the smallest crowd to witness a MLB game in decades.

Way to go, South Florida. Way to show those politicians that 400 million for a new stadium would be money well-spent.

Did you go to the game?

No, I didn't. I was, like many people, at work. But I am a partial season-ticket holder, and have gone to about 25 games this year, so I'm certainly doing my part to support the Marlins.

The point here is not that the Marlins don't draw well on get-away weekday games. If they drew even mediocre crowds during the rest of the week and had 400 people at a get-away weekday game, it wouldn't be such a big deal. It's precisely because they only have 4,000 people coming to a weekend NIGHT game and draw so poorly in general that the 400-person attendance becomes an example of why South Florida "fans" treat this team like the poor, red-headed stepchild.

Perhaps that's a bad analogy. The red-headed stepchild gets beaten, so at least he's getting some attention. The Marlins are all but ignored.

How many "insert northern team here" fans are there in South Fla for all the other sports? I don't buy that argument one bit. All those other teams drew/draw well despite the large transplant population in South Florida. Baseball might have more games but it is still the 2nd sport in the United States. I just don't understand why baseball has succeeded in every city in the United States and Miami will be the lone exception. It makes no sense! Especially when you consider the large contingent of people from the Northeast (the birthplace of baseball) and the Caribbean (the current baseball hotspot).

That has always been a mystery to me. Years ago when it was suggest that baseball would be HUGE in South Florida, it was from the Cuban community you heard the loudest voice, "WE WILL GO".

Well what happened ????

So ...............

I distinctly recall a NYY game at venerable Yankee Stadium in the late-60 / early-70s where the announced crowd was 412 (that's right - four hundred and twelve). I think they counted turnstiles (as opposed to tickets sold) back then.

Yes, for the damn Yankees - of course, before Steinbrenner brought them back. And it was a late seaon rainy day etc....

Keep perspective - someone should mention that (Herald writers - alert!!!!).

OUT.

Truth is, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this emabarassment. NONE. I was even dreading going into work on Thursday because everyone I come into contact with knows I am a season ticket holder and huge Marlins fan. I was humiliated beyond words. I even considered putting a black bandage over my tattoo. But I went, held my head high, and took the ridicule. Just like I did when my Broncos lost a Super Bowl 55-10. Difference is, that one passed, this one won't.

When South Florida "fans" want someone or something to blame for this lousy attendance thing then they only need to look into a mirror and point. That's the bottom line. Plain and simple. Period.

Maybe it is time for this team to move. To ANY place that would show far more support and respect for a MLB franchise and it's players. Even someplace like Whatchascratchin, North Dakota would fill that bill.

You live in South Florida, and you root for a NON-SOUTH FLORIDA TEAM and can't understand the problem ? :banghead  :whistle :banghead  :thumbdown

Dude you lose all credibility.

actually from a marlins point of view the dolphins and their owner have been a hinderance in getting a new stadium so he loses no credibility
