Pitcher God, that's scary. nasty 1-6 but watch if they go out and get bonds the 7 and 8 holes will be black holes and uggla will get nothing to hit in that case I think we'll be 'OK' in that scenario with Cody as an everyday player. Catcher would still need an upgrade, though. i dont think cody can handle playing 150+ games in a season. maybe he could be productive in about 120 games and we can use pasta but that would be some pretty bad outfield defense to go along with the "work in progress" infield defense. sure the defense can't get any worse from the past 2 years but i would like it to improve and rather have someone with good defense in center who is a step down from cody at the plate getting time in center Outfield defense is overrated. The Yankees are on their way to the playoffs with a hodge-podge of Damon, Matsui, Cabrera and Abreu. None of whom are a substantial upgrade over what we have now. Not saying defense is unimportant, but it's certainly overstated. If Cody can take is .377/.465/.739/1.203 line against LHP this eason and continue to post an OPS in the 700's against right-handers full time, we're looking at a very very very good 7 hole option. FWIW, Cody's got a .986 OPS against RHP this year, so there is tremendous hope he can be a good full-time player. Yes he'd need a break every now and then, but dammit the man has earned the right to be the in-house favorite for the CF job next year, and I'm not talking platoon status either.

September 25, 200719 yr I don't see how you can say he "wears down", he's never had a full season in the majors really and he never had a problem wearing down in the minors. Just because he had a hamstring injury this year doesn't mean he's going to be injured every year. And while I somewhat agree with what you're saying Swift, I'd argue that Yankees OF def is better than ours. Willingham has basically no range (< Matsui), Melky is actually a good defender (< whoever we throw out there in center), and Damon atleast has speed to give him decent range in CF even if he doesn't have an arm (< Ross). Abreu and Hermida are probably push. I don't think there's a team out there with a OF defense with worse range than ours, expecially with Cody out in center. That's really my only problem with Cody, our OF range would be atrocious. Also: One year incentive deal for Milton Bradley :mischief Though I'm sure someone will end up giving him a multi-year deal...but you never know, teams are very normally scared of giving multi-year deals to injured players.

Pitcher God, that's scary. nasty 1-6 but watch if they go out and get bonds the 7 and 8 holes will be black holes and uggla will get nothing to hit in that case This is why I suggested trading Willingham and keeping Jacobs. Trading Jacobs would be a waste. Trade Willingham for a MLB ready catcher or center fielder, and keep Jacobs. Then, you've eliminated one of the two "black holes" without sacrificing much offensive production. I think Jacobs can be just as productive in that lineup as Willingham if he plays the entire season. I bring up David DeJesus again. The Royals are interested in finding more power from their outfield positions, and have the luxury of another CF in Gathright. 1.Hanley 2.Hermida 3.Cabs 4.Bonds 5.Uggla 6.Jacobs 7.DeJesus?? 8.C 9.Pitcher

He has a .360 career OBP, great contact rate. Take advantage of Hanley's slugging with a real hitter, not pitcher, in front of him. He's also perfect, as in a lefty, who hits RHP harder making a natural platoon with Cody. The Marlins would be really lucky to get him. Contract is reasonable - 08:$2.5M, 09:$3.6M, 10:$4.7M, 11:$6M club option ($0.5M buyout)

In a full year of work, Cody may not be an all-star, but he'd certainly better Juan Pierre's .688 OPS (good for dead-last among CF's qualified for the batting title). He's well over 1.000 in limited work this year, hitting .750 in full-time play isn't unreasonable at all.

CFer with .750 OPS; little to no range in a HUGE CF or Option B. CFer with .688 OPS; good range in said CF plus a threat to steal 50+ bases (SB's are overrated I know, but still....) Give me Option B and it's not even close IMO. You can win a WS with a Juan Pierre in CF, you can't with a Cody Ross. Edit: BTW, Ross would have to have an OPS of about .850+ IMO to justify him playing CF full time in JRS, which I just don't see happening.
September 25, 200719 yr I just checked Cody's CF Zone Rating and it's .797 which is the worst among the 49 CFs with 239+ innings (he has 239 innings). Scrap the Cody in CF idea.

That's a bigger liability than letting 8 balls get down over the course of a month. Not every ball that should have been caught turns into a run. EVERY runner that gets thrown out does not turn into a run.
September 25, 200719 yr Couldn't MB miss some time next year too? He's expected to miss some time....From what I've read: Best case: Back not too long after spring training Worse case: Out all of '08 Well, he hasn't even had surgery yet, so really have to wait before getting a more determined time schedule.
September 27, 200719 yr Author http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl...nds-cover_N.htm BONDS' NEXT STOP A BIG TOPICSAN FRANCISCO - They sit in the stands, stand in the bars, debate back and forth, forecasting Barry Bonds' next destination. Gary Hughes, special assistant to Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, predicts only that Bonds will be playing next season, convinced he has another good year left. Scott Boras, who once represented him, guarantees Bonds will sell plenty of tickets wherever he goes, adding to his value. San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers doesn't care where Bonds goes, as long as it's outside the division. Bonds himself has no idea where he will be playing, although his preference is to be close to his Los Angeles home with a spring training site in Arizona. "I'll leave all that speculation to the reporters and media people," he says. No front-office official is permitted to publicly discuss Bonds because of possible tampering violations, but the leading contenders for his services appear to be the Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins and Seattle Mariners. Bonds' preferred teams, the Oakland A's and Los Angeles Angels, privately said they are not interested.
September 28, 200719 yr I really wish someone would give me 5,000 to one odds. it begins again :mischief
September 28, 200719 yr I just don't see how this could happen. If we can't afford to have Bonds, Cabrera, Willis on the same team, trading Willis to accommodate Bonds when pitching is our problem makes no sense. Also why would we waste our money on one year of Bonds when that money could be placed aside for a ballpark/cabrera. Now unless Loria can tell us he has enough money to sign Cabrera longtem, keep Willis for 08, and pay for a new ballpark, signing Bonds would make no sense. Not that this seems at all likely to me anyway.

September 28, 200719 yr Excellent, Loria can put money on the Marlins to get Bonds, and pay for Bond's salaries with the money he collects from betting correctly.
September 28, 200719 yr The Marlins can afford Bonds. The question is "Do they want to spend the money?" As someone above said Bonds = Ticket sales

I think it's pretty clear that in Loria's current business model stuffing his puckets with money is more important than ticket sales. Just look at the last firesale. I doubt the added revenues from a Bonds signing would make up for his ~$15 million salary and for the loss in revenue sharing. Also remember that the increased revenues from ticket sales would decrease Loria's revenue sharing check.
