Bonds To The Marlins...

Featured Replies

I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but I sincerely think that the only way the Marlins will be able to fill all of their holes for a 2008 run is to trade Dontrelle Willis. The $8 million (or whatever) the Marlins save plus the talent they receive in return will place them in a greater position to win because there are no guarantees on how he will perform next season. Even with decreased trade value I think it is the right decision to make.

maybe if you said that back in March... but that isn't so unpopular anymore

Scenario A

I don't think Jacobs is going to pan out. What we see is what we get. The Marlins may not be able to get much for him but I think an offseason trade would maximize the return and will give the Marlins the ability to upgrade 1B which is an offensive position.

Well, for the record, what we're seeing this season is lower HR, RBI, OBP, and OPS than Willingham, but a higher BA and SLG % in 120-ish less AB's.

The two are actually very comparable offensively this season. HR(17, 21) RBI(52, 89) OBP(.330, .364) OPS(.809, .827) SLG(.479, .463) AVG(.277, .265)

Man sign me up....i'd take Bonds on this team in a heartbeat....He'd be under NO pressure here because no one goes and the media could care less about the Marlins...

he is better than Giambi defensively

Umm...ok?

That doesn't make one capable. And Giambi's bat (when healthy) can carry his glove (even if he is essentially a DH now) the same can't be said for Jacobs.

Now, what I'm going to say may be unpopular, but here's my opinion:

Willingham is being misused in the lineup. His strong suit is his OBP ability (.365 with a .265 average is pretty darn good), his slugging is middle of the pack for NL qualified outfielders...Jacobs' slugging is middle of the pack for NL 1st baseman (although, it must be cautioned, he does not qualify for the batting title), and no one here mistakes Jacobs for an on-base machine. If given the choice of the two for the lineup with the stated objection of filling the 6 hole (or whatever run producing spot it is) I think a solid case could be made for Jacobs having the advantage if for no other reason than Willingham than Josh can't hit a lefty to save his life and Jacobs is OPS'ing .876 against left-handed pitching this year (honestly, I was shocked too).

Now this isn't to say just discard Willingham. Personally, I think he'd be a tremendous bench player, as the occasional day off would no doubt be of tremendous benefit to his balky back.

So, to conclude, Jacobs probably makes more sense for the team, lower in the order, than Willingham does. Moreover, Jacobs probably has more value to the team than he would return in trade and I'm not so certain the same could be said for Josh. There could be something to gain here, and of course it's all predicated on adding a big-bat.

No one else had to use roids to break one of the greatest and most cherished records in baseball history.

If roids werent involved, Bonds would never of even been close. At all.

he would have been at or near 600 easily.

1) he wants a world series ... I dont care what kind of great team the marlins "supposedly" are, they still have the worst record in the national league

2) he is going to the AL ... because why would he want to take the field everyday

1) I'd have a hard time seeing the "great" teams offering him a contract. They already win and they already sell a lot of tickets. They don't need or won't put up with the Barry Bonds circus. The Yankees and Red Sox already have super expensive and/or productive DH's. The Mets hardly need to get more left-handed. The Tigers are all locked in the outfield and DH with Maybin, Granderson, Sheffield and Ordonez.

2) Pride. You don't think he doesn't want to eclipse 3,000 hits as a left-fielder and not a DH?

1) Seattle, Toronto, Angels, A's, Cleveland ... thats just from the top of my head, those teams are at least contenders this year or could be contenders next year and could also dish out some cash. The Marlins wont.

2) not really, It's Barry Bonds

Say what you want about Barry Lamar, but there's no way he would be happy to just play DH. He has as much pride as anyone out there.

Seattle has Vidro, Toronto Frank Thomas, Cleveland Travis Hafner. So those three are out of the 'slam dunk to offer' derby. The Angels will be a factor, but only as a DH, and the A's, I don't know, they made a lot of sense this past season and didn't offer him. I stand by my source that the only teams that went after him last season were the Angels, Marlins and Giants.

Also, what do you mean, 'not really, it's Barry Bonds.' I thought 99% of the reason people hated him was because he was overly arrogant and full of pride, the other 1% because he was doing all that while being black.

The possibility of that happening is still a matter of conjecture. Two weeks ago, Bonds had interest from the Oakland A's and the San Diego Padres, but those negotiations have gone into a holding pattern. Borris declined to comment about the nature of negotiations with other clubs on Friday night, although he did say that the arbitration deadline wasn't really an issue.

Right, and they never offered him.

Biggest question with Jacobs is health, because a healthy Mike Jacobs is likely a .800-850 OPS hitter in one of the worst parks for a LH hitter.

oh yeah, Vidro

thats one guy you wouldnt want to replace at any cost

Not saying that isn't true, but they had a shot at Barry last offseason and they chose Vidro, who has worked out very well for them.

That and any and all Mariners resources this offseason will likely be spent on pitching.

I'd love to see Bonds in a Marlins uniform for a few reasons.

He would make the Marlins relevant, immediately.

Attendance would surely rise.

Mike Jacobs would gone.

Like Swift said earlier, Miggy then Bonds in a lineup would be fierce. The best batter Bonds' ever played with was Jeff Kent and Miguel Cabrera is much more of a feared hitter than Jeff Kent. I do understand Kent was a great hitter and an MVP.

A lineup of:

1. Hanley

2. Hermida

3. Cabs

4. Bonds

5. Willingham

6. Uggla

7. CF

8. C

9. Pitcher

Who knows maybe we get lucky with a young arm next year, get a veteran lefty ala Mark Redman was in '03 and get a bullpen and we have a contender. LOL sounds too good to be true, doesnt it. LOL

Anyways Bonds in a Marlins uniform if it could get done would just be pure awesomeness.

I'd love to have a lefty soft tosser on the the staff FTF.

nasty 1-6 but watch if they go out and get bonds the 7 and 8 holes will be black holes and uggla will get nothing to hit in that case

I think we'll be 'OK' in that scenario with Cody as an everyday player.

Catcher would still need an upgrade, though.

i dont think cody can handle playing 150+ games in a season. maybe he could be productive in about 120 games and we can use pasta but that would be some pretty bad outfield defense to go along with the "work in progress" infield defense. sure the defense can't get any worse from the past 2 years but i would like it to improve and rather have someone with good defense in center who is a step down from cody at the plate getting time in center

Most of the horrible defense comes from the IF. Among the outfielders Hermida was the worst defender and he has improved as the season has gone along.
