We are having a discussion about it on the phillies board, and I thought you guys would know best.

Apparently Loria (the owner) was hectoring the umpire over the strike zone, Girardi didn't like it and told Loria to "shut the f*** up." The FO then decided to leak everything they'd been disappointed with since day one.

It was Gary Tuck that told Loria to shut the f*** up. Girardi told Loria not to give the umpire business. Loria leaned into the dugout and said something to Girardi and Tuck fired back.

Maybe that's why Beinfest wanted to fire him during the '05 season but unfortunately Loria overruled him and the firing, or the "retiring" if you prefer, did not occur until after the season.

Despite the problems I had with Girardi's management of the team in 2006, he was way better than our current manager. I have never seen a manager like Fredi who pretty much never argued calls more than once or twice a year. He also rarely left his seat.

That's not the reason the Marlins sucked this year. The Marlins sucked because their starting rotation was decimated by injuries and just all around poor play.

 

Girardi was not responsible for the great play of the rotation in 2006. He made many more boneheaded mistakes than Gonzalez did this past season.

Yeah, but there were many times that a lot of the people here, including myself, felt he should have stood up for his guys on bad play calls.

There's a number of different "reasons" offered by many and made public simply by those who had something to gain. Girardi, Samson, Loria, Beinfest and unnamed Marlins officials were all quoted offering explanations to the decision and the(ir) reasons why.

 

There's the story that Girardi wanted to radically reshape the 2006 Marlins lineup by putting Willingham at C, Hanley to CF, etc. Honestly I don't buy this. Both position changes had been suggested among those involved and/or following the team before and after Girardi's tenure. If Girardi agreed with them, it wouldn't have been THE thing that caused the conflict because those same opinions are being whispered around the front office and in front of the media.

 

Then there's the story that Girardi embarrassed Loria by telling him to shut up at a game. Again, I don't buy this. Beinfest is said to had as much of a problem,, if not more, with Girardi than Loria. The decision to fire Girardi was always painted by the local media as an organization-wide decision, not simply a spited boss.

 

And, of course, there's the story that Beinfest didn't want Girardi to begin with. That is well known news. However, was this the reason Girardi was dropped? I doubt it. However much Beinfest may have wanted Gonzalez or was uninspired by Girardi, it is widely accepted belief that a MLB manager has minimal impact on a team's fortunes, especially for a franchise like the Marlins. One can only assume that the guy who trades players and sign contracts to hold a similar opinion of field managers and think Gonzalez would be THAT much different. And if this disgareement between Beinfest and ownership over Girardi was the real reason, do you really think Loria would trust Beinfest enough to promote him this offseason? Hardly.

 

More likely, the story is a series of disagreements on philosophies regarding to the team's game strategy, player development and organizational command that caused the team to realize that Girardi could not be retained. I don't disagree at all. It is somewhat frustrating as a fan to see his lack of intervention sometimes. The only thing I can think of is having worked for the guy who has been ejected the most, he may have learned/realized/pick your own word that 99.9% of the time Cox' antics got him nowhere and nothing except a trip to the lockeroom.

I'm not one who blames Fredi for all of our team's problems this year, in fact, I think he was only responsible for 90 percent of them. It wasn't his fault that the rotation got injured, but he obviously could not pull the right strings when it came to getting good performances out of Willis, Olsen, or anyone else who started a game for us this year. It's obvious in every interview that I see with him that his leadership skills are lacking and that his "it's got to get better" attitude without doing anything to actually solve the problem isn't going to work. Ever.

 

So the FO got a yes man as manager, and the result was an awful season that saw our biggest trading ruin his value.
