October 25, 200322 yr Signing Pudge had very little to do with star power, and more to do with the fact that the Marlins could afford a hall of fame calibur catcher who shuts down running games, hits .300 with power, and bats in a lot of runs, especially in key situations. What? it was ALL about star power. The guy averaged 108 game a season the previous 3 seasons for god sake! They didn't even think he could play as much as he did. That was a gift! The funny thing is, Torbog had SO much confidence in astro that he planned on playing Ivan two games, then Ramon one, on and on. And Ivan had NEVER had an average near what it was this year with runners in scoring position, so that was another gift.
October 25, 200322 yr I simply disagree with your almost assurance to us that Castro will be a very good major league player I simply disagree with all of your (not just you, but everyones) assurance that he will NOT succeed, when all signs point to the exact opposite. im not assuring you he's not going to succeed, im saying that he's not guaranteed to, especially after the way the team has kept him constantly on the bench these last 2 seasons and he only got 53 ab's this year. im saying there might be something we dont know. also he's facing charges, something that could get in the way. but im not guarantteing he wont succeed. there are no guarantees in sports

If you think signing this guy was all about star power due to the fact he had a few injuries in the past, you are an idiot. Signing a guy for 10 million dollars for star power in a market where fans don't show up for the most part until late in the year, and that's ONLY if the marlins are good, is beyond stupid if that's what the ownerships motive was. And ok, so Torborg had a lot of confidence in Castro, so what?? His sorry a** got fired in May because this team couldn't win under him, then Jack comes in and takes this team to a NL Pennant. All that proves to me is that Torborg didn't know everything, if much of anything.

October 25, 200322 yr how come he didnt to give Pudge a rest? instead they used Redmond who was struggling Torborg DID use Castro! Let's settle it as this: There are no gaurentees in baseball. We don't know if he will be good, or bad. We all hope he will be good, the signs point that he will be, but we don't know until he gets a shot, or chance to get more AB's.

October 25, 200322 yr Yea, He was only a major league cathcer for 10 some odd years... really? Like that make him any smarter.
October 25, 200322 yr Yea, He was only a major league cathcer for 10 some odd years... Jeff Torborg and Bob Boone, 2 former catchers, both fired this year for managing ineptitude.
October 25, 200322 yr Lowell - gold glove defense? (5 pages ago) I can hardly wait to see how many errors he has next year without 6'5" Derek Lee bailing him out every other throw. He can't sling it across the diamond on a consistent basis - Lee is either squatting down to receive the throw half the time, or he is doing a full-on split. It's ridiculous. I will just be curious to see how Lowell's E's change (if he sticks around) which I HIGHLY doubt. Lowell - 2004 - Yankee Pinstripes.

I agree with part of that - I think Lowell is a little overrated defensively. He's very good but I don't think he has great range. Like you said, Lee saves him a bunch of errors (Gonzalez too). Why are you so convinced that Lowell will be a Yankee in 2004?

October 25, 200322 yr Lowell - 2004 - Yankee Pinstripes. You sound like a certain Fillet 'O Fish I know. Someone I proved wrong on a consistant basis as time progressed. So damn pessimistic. Jeff Torborg and Bob Boone, 2 former catchers, both fired this year for managing ineptitude. Just because they were atrocious managers, doesn't mean they don't know a little something about catching.

October 25, 200322 yr Crankees are gonna go crazy this off-season... So? They can't just go plucking anybody they want from other teams. Loria and company get a vote in this too.
