October 25, 200322 yr There is a "knock" out there on Castro regarding certain types of pitchers and types of pitches. I've read it or seen it referred any number of times but I honestly don't remember what it is, righties or lefties, curves or breaking balls, I guess I could go research it but I'm pretty sure the story is he has a particular weakness that is well known to scouts, managers and players and is exploitable over a 162 game season. That's why he's the number 3 catcher. I haven't heard anything like that ever. If you could find it...
October 25, 200322 yr I've never seen such a fierce argument over some nobody who is 50/50 at best to make it in the show.
October 25, 200322 yr I've never seen such a fierce argument over some nobody who is 50/50 at best to make it in the show. WC insists he's right... which is wrong.
October 25, 200322 yr Wild Card: If you checked your facts, more than half of top prospects don't make it into good players in the pros, so your attitude of confidence on this castro kid, who won't see the light of day as long as Pudge is here if he is a catcher, is a bit baffling to me.
October 25, 200322 yr oh WC is insulted at the mere thought he could be proven wrong Well, have you ever heard that? I've never seen such a fierce argument over some nobody who is 50/50 at best to make it in the show. He hit . 327 with 27 home runs in his last full professional season (AAA).

Whenever he has actually gotten the chance to play, he has succeeded.

He's a nobody until he gets into the show at least. And I could also give you plenty of numbers that good of guys in triple a who never made it into the show. The minors and majors are quite different, that's why the minors have so many more players and leagues.
October 25, 200322 yr He hit . 327 with 27 home runs in his last full professional season (AAA). WC, there's a big difference between AAA and MLB.
October 25, 200322 yr Truly a fast reply. According to ESPN he hit .409 against lefties and .194 against righties. There are many more right handed pitchers in the MLB than lefties. Over a season with 80/20 righty/lefties your probably looking at a guy who hits .235. That might be the genesis of the argument.

Whenever he has actually gotten the chance to play, he has succeeded. Same could be said about white sox farmhand willie harris, who hit over .300 everywhere he went in the minors. When he got to the pros though last year, he couldn't hit his own weight.

I think you said it yourself earlier (or it was someone else), you can't determine a full-season on 53 at-bats. And look at Derrek Lee's split stats. Same goes for Lowell and even the all-mighty Pudge.

You're not acknowledging the difference between triple a and the pros, and if you want another example of what i'm saying, white sox farmhand joe borchard had almost identical numbers to this castro kid in triple a about 2 years ago IIRC, and he couldn't cut it in the pros, so we had to trade for carl everett.

Maybe I should clearify what I'm saying. Whenever he has gotten the chance to play IN THE MAJORS, he has succeeded.

October 25, 200322 yr You just don't get it. The only thing holding back Ramon Castro is Ramon Castro.

I can say with confidence pudge and lowell don't have a split that dramatic, and if you can't determine a full season on 53 at bats, you can't determine if a guy will be successful in the majors on 53 at bats or on how he did in the minors. And don't make me bring up more examples...because I could do it all day.

Maybe I should clarify what i'm saying....minor league and very limited major league action don't determine whether somebody will be successful.

I'm basing it on what peolpe have said about him. Do you remember a quote from IVAN RODRIGUEZ about Ramon Castro? He said the exact same thing as Jeff Torborg. He, the all-mighty Ivan Rodriguez, stated that Ramon castro was going to be an All-Star player one day. So if you don't care what Torborg said, you best respect what Pudge says.

Basing what people have said about potential, stats, and what other people have said, Drew Henson should be a gold-glove winning all star 3rd baseman in the majors hitting .300/30/100 a year at least.
October 25, 200322 yr You just don't get it. The only thing holding back Ramon Castro is Ramon Castro. The only thing(s) holding back Ramon Castro are named Chareles Johnson and Ivan Rodriguez. Castro would start for 17 other major league teams. Period.
