Getting Props on ESPN

Tim Krukjen iz one of the few BBTN guys I respect. Both Steve Phillips and John Kruk won't acknowledge the marlinz because they hold a Mets/Phillies bias because Phillips wuz GM of da mets and Kruk wuz a player for the Phillies. Tim tells it like it iz.

People in Chicago say the same thing about the Marlins. I think they are just bitter from 2003 :)

People hate us cause we're heartbreakers.

People only love ya if you've got a notable star or two. Sadly, when you're perceived as a bunch of nobodies, lots of critics take that and run with it.

Because Hanley Ramirez isn't a notable star.

Sometimes I feel like Hanley gets the cold shoulder in that regard, like last year when he got snuffed in the all-star ballots. I'll just say that I don't think Hanley is as notable as other stars, like the Pujols and Ortizs of the world and it's all because the Marlins are a small market club.

People see us as nobodies regardless of Hanley's star presence. It's all pretty obvious.

This.

Speaking of ESPN and Kurkjian, he relayed a couple funny stories last night that Luis Gonzalez told him.....one of them had to do with someone having a uniform that said "Gibson" and "45" on the back, and many of the players thought it was Kirk Gibson's, when in reality, it was Bob Gibson.

The other one was one day during BP, there was a guy standing out at the batting cages. Gonzo went up to 20 of the Marlins players and asked if they knew who it was....18 didn't know. It was hall-of-fame pitcher Jim Palmer.

Just thought those were a couple funny anecdotes to share that shows just how young (and perhaps, oblivious) these Marlins are.

I am sure they will talk non stop tonight about how the Marlins are falling back to earth.

"We told you so! The Marlins are starting to slide again and will be in last place in a couple of weeks. Btw, there was only about 13,000 fans out there tonight which means the stadium was 60% empty."

Tim Kirkjian was just saying this morning the Marlins have "no right" to be where they are and something about it being fraudulent or a fraud or something akin to that.

I wouldn't go that far. But I do think this team has some growing to do before they are real contenders. Still too many mind farts. I think we are further ahead of schedule than I originally thought, but not yet there. I still pick the hated Phillies to take the NL East. I'm still looking at a .500 season, maybe a bit better. Maybe nudging the Braves out of 2nd place. Depends on when we get SPs back and how they perform once they get here.

Last night I was watching Sportscenter and although they had a decent amount of highlights and talked about how well Miller pitched, they had to follow it with: "The Marlins, are winning but fans still aren't showing up. Only 13,000 showed up last night which means the stadium was 60% empty." Bunch of douche bags.

So you want the props as long as they don't tell the truth about the other things. You pretty much want them to treat us as the Mets of the south that you complain about so much. Is that about right?

We just had 2 first place teams going to toe to toe with 3 very good opposing pitchers, one going for a MLB record, and then the hopes of a sweep and we average about 12K a night. I would say the bashing was well founded.

It's stupid, pointless, and they do it all the time. Wtf does this have to do with the Mets?

No it's not stupid or pointless. It's on the mark. As far as the Mets...Think about it. Complain they, or other northeast teams for that matter, get all the love and not much national media bashing and then want the same thing for the Marlins is showing hypocrisy.

What the hell do the fans have to do with the team on the field? And if it's not stupid and pointless, then please tell me what it solves. They've been pointing out our bad attendance for over a decade and it's basically like constantly pointing out that the sky is blue.

Even if, for arguments sake, you think the Marlins should only be playing .500 ball, with the current record the should finish with 84-85 wins. Or do you expect the Fish to decline into a losing team?

I probably didn't word that very well. I think they CAN win that many, and what a boost it would be. Could even get Fredi the MOY award. But even that shouldn't get us into the play offs. I don't currently see them as "flukes" or "lucky" to be where they are currently at. They have earned it. It's just that overall I don't see them as a real contender for that big shiney trophy this year. They are, however, giving me real high hopes for next year. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy watching them develope.

Did that clear it up??

It is a valid observation. You may not like it, but it is a true one. If you prefer to stick your head in the sand and ignore it, that's your choice. Evidently it is an embarassing fact to you. As it should be. But that dosen't make it go away nor will it stop others from commenting on it simply because you don't like it.

I've heard Buster Olney give us a good amount of credit.

Didn't he say a week or two ago that we are the real deal and will be in the race come September?

He is consistant and said at the begininng of the year we were better than he thought we would be, and that others shouldn't count us as dead before the season. This was back in early April.

Tim Kirkjian was just saying this morning the Marlins have "no right" to be where they are and something about it being fraudulent or a fraud or something akin to that.

Tim Kirkjian was also the one in 2003 who said up until the end that the Marlins would not win the Wild Card. The guy is a tool with a capital T.

And the one guy who consistantly said the Marlins would win (starting in late July he said it) was Jeff Brantley.....and of course he is gone from ESPN.

I don't mind when the media disses the Marlins. I think it keeps the players hungry. There is a lot of back slapping by the media during the season but in the end there's only one team standing and that's what matters. I'd rather win the world series than have any of our guys on the all-star team or even on plays-of-the-week.

As for the attendance- of course its an issue with this team but what it has to do with how good the team is at the moment is irrelavent. Attendance doesn't show up in the standings or the scoreboard.
