May 26, 200818 yr Cantu isn't as fortunate as Hermida. When Hermida goes into a slump, he's 24. When Cantu does, he sucks, his OPS is .700 and he can't throw. I guess life isn't fair. LOL Hermida is 24, was one of the 4 best hitting prospects in baseball (like 2 years ago), and has already had a better season than Cantu ever has. Hermida also has a much better minor league track record, and believe it or not, is actually a much better defensive player. He's slumping now, but to compare him to Cantu is actually more unfair to Cantu than anything. Even the biggest Cantu supporters agree he is nothing but a league average at best stop gap. Is there anyone in their right mind who thinks that about Hermida? Cantu, 2005: .286, 171 hits, 40 doubles, 28 HRs, 117 RBIs. .311 OBP, .497 Slugging percentage. It was a good season for a 2nd baseman, but it's not near as good as Hermida's last season. His counting stats aren't as good because Fredi batted him 8th most of the season because he was a dummy last year with his lineups, but that doesn't mean Hermida wasn't the better player. I know OPS is supposed to be the be-all and end-all for stats, but I still think the guy with 10 more HR's, 8 more doubles, 40 more RBIs, and 50 more hits had the better season. Don't forget 170 more ABs. .286/.311/.497 being better than .296/.369 /.501 is a hard argument to make.

Is there anyone in their right mind who thinks that about Hermida? Besides all that, I'm not sure what your point is. Are you trying to imply that Cantu is actually the better player, but since so many people hate him, he gets treated unfairly? Cantu doesn't really slump. He's a .700 OPS player who has 3 or 4 good games in a row every 10 games or so to get his OPS to a little more digestible .750-.775. Those 3-4 good games aren't enough to justify the 10 games where he does nothing. Especially if he's going to continue being our worst defensive player. And I wouldn't have a problem with Cantu if there weren't at least the possibility McPherson could do better. Why not give him a shot, and if he doesn't Cantu stays? What harm does that do? Where is the "Defense" first crowd when it comes to Cantu? Weren't most of you Cantu defenders also the ones constantly bitching about defense last year? You're out of your mind if you think I was implying that Cantu is a better player than Hermida. Barring injury, Hermida will have a much more fruitful career than Cantu. As far as what my point was, I thought it was quite simple but I will hold your hand through it: Hermida always gets a free pass, and it's borderline criminal to even make mention of one of his slumps or defensive blunders. Cantu comes in, does a SERVICABLE job defensively at 3B (is he really that much worse than Cabs circa 2007?) and he gets hot now and then with his bat yet he gets blasted every step of the way by the haters. Cantu: 7 HR's/.342 OBP/.451 SLG/.277 AVG Hermida: 6 HR/.310 OBP/.442 SLG/.264 AVG I never hear anyone on this board demanding that we need to sit Hermida so Brett Carrol can get a "shot" What the fvck has Dallas done that would suggest Cantu should get BENCHED so he can get some playing time? Tear up the PCL? Cantu has produced at this level. Dallas has not and has chronic back injuries.

May 26, 200818 yr Where is the "Defense" first crowd when it comes to Cantu? Weren't most of you Cantu defenders also the ones constantly bitching about defense last year? Cantu's defense is bad but based on RZR and OOZ it's comparable to that of some of our other starters. If you combine RZR and OOZ, Hermida ranks 20th out of 23 RFs. Cantu ranks 22nd out of 24 3B. Jacobs ranks 22nd out of 28. Uggla is 21st out of 25th. Hanley is 16th out of 23.

Dallas has not and has chronic back injuries. Hermida definitely doesn't always get a free pass. I defend him against the people who were saying he was a bust, should be traded, etc. I'll admit he's playing really poorly over the last 10 games. Cantu has been just as bad as Cabrera in 07, but he doesn't have anywhere near the arm Cabrera does, so I'd take Cabrera's defense over his, yes. Why can't Dallas get a shot? What more does he have to do in AAA to get a shot, especially when Cantu is really struggling. Cantu has been OK. But are you saying there is no chance Dallas can do better? What does it hurt to give him a shot and see if we can catch some lightning in a bottle? At the worst, he'll improve the defense at 3rd while he's there, and wasn't that our whole deal last year and this offseason? Improving defense? McPherson can do that (not because he's a GGer, but because Cantu is the worst defensive 3B in baseball), so why not at least see if he can match his offensive "production? I'd say it's an even bet that he does (Lower BA, higher OBP, probably). Where is the "Defense" first crowd when it comes to Cantu? Is being healthy/durable and able to play through a whole season an unfair criteria to use in assessing the value of a player? I understand that all this can't account for how a player's replacement plays, but honestly now. Isn't a player's job to produce runs for their team and help them win? Honestly, if you want to just compare percentages and ignore raw numbers you would say that Cody had a far better year than either of them ever had last year at .335/.411/.653 and most of his ABs last year were against RHP.

Judging by WARP, Hermida was worth 4.1 wins and Cantu only 3.4 (yes, this takes defense into account) in 07 and 05, respectively. Cody was worth 3.1 in just 173 ABs because of how well he hit.
May 26, 200818 yr McPherson is not getting a shot as of yet because of several reasons: Helms is on the team and is a proven reliable bench player Cantu is getting the job done thus far McPherson hasn't played long enough to indicate that he is not going to lapse into back problems He is not any kind of defensive maven at 3B The Marlins have nobody to send down for him, and have 5 other players on the roster that can play 3B, and 3 of those are on the bench DS is hell on Left Handers

I don't know how WARP is calculated, and at this point I don't care, I'll just leave it at this - 40 RBIs is not insignificant. Sure, you can argue he likely had more opportunities and such, and that might be true. If I could expect the two of them to repeat their best seasons for me and I had to pick one, I would pick the guy who scores 20 more runs and drives in 40 more runs. Offensively that makes a lot more difference IMO than a .058 difference in their OBP.
May 26, 200818 yr The Marlins have nobody to send down for him, and have 5 other players on the roster that can play 3B, and 3 of those are on the bench First of, don't we have an empty spot on the bench? Also, who are these 5 other guys, 3 bench players, who can play 3B? All I have Helms, Amezaga (who will be covering the OF with Carroll down)...and that's it. I guess Danny could in a pinch, even though he hasn't played there since 2005, where he appeared in 10 games. Didn't play much there before that either.

That accounts for most of the difference between the two in R and RBI, and the rest is probably accounted for by the difference in ABs.

Aside from the 2 that I got rid of, those are legitimate reasons, though there are counter-arguments to each, its not bad. They are all legitimate reasons. As much as we'd like a .850+ OPS 3B, McPherson isn't likely to be one either, so Cantu is getting the job done. He's created runs and has been fairly steady in the singles / walks department. When he gets hot, he gets extra basers, when he is cold he still tends to reach. Basically his .333 OBP is good for 1 out of 3 rather than streaks, it is his SLG that comes and goes. For instance he reached in all by 2 games this month. Therefore, he'd getting the job done (as well as can be expected from a franchise with no good options at 3B) At most, the Marlins could send down Andino and platoon McPheron and Cantu, which maybe can improve our 3B offense, but I am pretty sure the bloodbath would continue at 3B defensively.

The 3 bench guys are: Amezega, Andino and Helms. The 2 starters are Hanley and Uggla, with Uggla being the better choice, though frankly, unless the team bus falls off a bridge we'd just see Helms / Fredo over there if needed. We do not have an empty spot on the bench unless we send down Andino, I happen to think that the team is not at all high on Andino and are not eager to get him as many ABs in AAA as possible, whereas they do not want McPherson riding pine at all.

Is Andino really improving our 3B defense? It seems Cantu plays there almost all of the time. I don't see how adding a McPherson platoon does anything but improve our team, seeing as Andino is an automatic out and barely plays anyways.

At which time he will come back to the team I believe he is eligible to come back up on 6/5. And secondly, I'm not sure he will be called back up. Remember, he was sent down and only came back up because Carroll was injured. I think the fact that he was still in Miami had something to do with that.
