May 25, 200818 yr McPherson is reportedly still not healthy yet, still has back problems. Cantu is here for one year. Live with it. He can play 1st, 2nd, third. He is what he is and he'll end the season with 15 homeruns and a .275 average for $500k. And I bet if you looked at how many runs have actually come in because of his errors or how many have been game decision-makers the net number is very small. No excuse for the errors but you can't just look at the number and make a blanket comment about his contribution. Agreed. With one exception. I would change that to at least one year. He's still learning the position and I believe he will get better there as the season wears on. The Cantu haters here are really exageratting his down falls. He never will win a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger, but he is adequet, and that's all we really need in a stop gap player.
May 25, 200818 yr Cantu's numbers aren't that impressive. I don't see why McPherson couldn't put up something similar with better defense. a) it's the PCL b) His #'s aren't mind-boggling...he's hitting .214 against lefties, I believe. c) His defense, while it might be better than Cantu's, is not exactly McPherson's strength. A) He's been producing in line with his career (read: when he was a hot shot prospect) numbers in the PCL B) You platoon him with someone that beats up lefties, e.g. Wes Helms C) It may not be a strength, but it's certainly better, and if you can even match Cantu's batting with better defense, it's an upgrade, and should be made And I dare someone to proclaim me a Cantu-hater, because I'm not, I just see a chance to improve the team, and it will Did you happen to notice his K to BB ratio?? He may be hitting RHP pretty good in the PCL but he also has 51 Ks to 18 BBs against them. I think ML pitching would tear him up. And against RHP his k/bb ratio is comparable to Uggla's this year 46/17... and if you wanna take it one step further, he only really seems to be struggling against RPs at the moment... Against SP - 0.341 0.444 0.768 - 32/16 k/bb Against RP - 0.237 0.319 0.508 - 26/8 k/bb This would mean that he's struggling against guys he's only seen in limited stints, e.g. 1 at bat a game, or week or longer... Adequate > Mediocre > Bad Cantu's bat is mediocre, his fielding is bad... mediocre + bad =/= Adequate, it equals mediocre at best. Also, there's a difference between Cantu "haters" and people that think Cantu is just not good at playing 3B and that we have better alternatives.

"It was a chance to have a fresh start where people aren't waiting for me to get hurt. . . . I feel good. My back is really holding up well, and I'm able to play every day."

"It was a chance to have a fresh start where people aren't waiting for me to get hurt. . . . I feel good. My back is really holding up well, and I'm able to play every day." My comment came from Josh Freidman or Craig Mish (I don't remember which said it although I think it was the former) yesterday on 790. He (whichever) was going through the minor league levels having spoken to a scout he "holds in the highest esteem" blah blah blah... ...Obviously Dallas disagrees.
May 26, 200818 yr To be honest, I wouldn't mind McPherson up once interleague play begins (in the AL parks). However, I just think Cantu gets lots of criticism for his defense. True, his defense has been pretty bad...but the whole team is bad, defensively. Mike Jacobs is bad defensively Dan Uggla is improving, but his career #'s suggest he's just a mediocre fielder...and his #'s this year aren't "outstanding." Hanley is one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball Hermida falls asleep on occasion in the OF Gonzo has the arm of a 10 year old (can't really fault him for surgery, but facts are facts). The only player on this team that can play defense at a great, consistent level...is Alfredo Amezaga. If we're going to complain about Cantu's throwing errors, I think we should throw some complaints at some other players, as well. Noone has been as bad as Cantu this year. Jacobs is showing some improvement out there, he just needs to learn to pick the ball, especially with the wild arm of Cantu. Dan Uggla has been much better this year and was average in 2006. 2007 was bad. His range has been above average this year, but he still needs to work on his glovework. Hanley has made strides, but that still has to be worked on. His offense heavily makes up for it though. Hermida has actually been fielding pretty well, outside a few occasions, this year. Gonzo is what we call a "bench player" who is a backup. So yes, the only player who you can say might be playing defense as badly as Cantu, due to age and a weak arm, is a bench player. A bench player how has easily been outhitting Cantu. Marlins are not a good defensive club, but hey they are winning games and that what it's all about anyway. I can live with Cantu at 3rd he is helping the team more than he can hurt it...Hell if we had Ryan Braun with the Marlins I would put him back at 3rd (someone give him the message...)
May 26, 200818 yr Everyone know's he'll hit the occassional home run. Doesn't change any of the knocks on him.
May 26, 200818 yr He had a nice day. This is more of what we need from him. He was ice cold before today.
May 26, 200818 yr Everyone know's he'll hit the occassional home run. Doesn't change any of the knocks on him. I prefer: 4-7, 2 homers, 3 walks, 4 runs, 4 rbi. Not too shabby. That should buy him a break for a couple of days at least.
May 26, 200818 yr Today was pretty awesome for Jorge And it wasn't just his bat. Very nice glove work as well. That DP he started by ranging far to his left in the first game was a beauty. The bare handed grab and throw to first to get their speedster in the second game was even better. And one in particular he won't get credit for was on one play he went far left, but let the ball go by because Hanley had the better position to get the out. Smart play. Just about every throw to first in both games was a strike. But that dosen't fit the argument for the Cantu-haters. This guy can not play defense at all.
May 26, 200818 yr Great curtain call for him today. Maybe that will get his confidence up Three curtain calls in one day. Uggla, Cantu, and Cody. Wonder if that's a Marlins regular season record??
May 26, 200818 yr Great curtain call for him today. Maybe that will get his confidence up Three curtain calls in one day. Uggla, Cantu, and Cody. Wonder if that's a Marlins regular season record?? It probably is. The crowd was great yesterday. 14,000 +is the best this season for a Sunday game, and the people there yesterday we having a great time. Bob, I didn't see you all day until the 2nd or 3rd in Game 2. I was going to go over inbetween the innings, I turned back, and you were gone!
May 26, 200818 yr Cantu isn't as fortunate as Hermida. When Hermida goes into a slump, he's 24. When Cantu does, he sucks, his OPS is .700 and he can't throw. I guess life isn't fair. LOL

May 26, 200818 yr But that dosen't fit the argument for the Cantu-haters. This guy can not play defense at all. I think he can get the ball, but I don't think he has the arm for 3B, as a result he has to really rear back and hurl it - leading to wild throws. Lets not compare him to Jeremy. Hermida is better, has been better, and will be better. Anyone that thinks Jorge is even supposed to provide a .800 - .850 OPS is just expecting what we are not going to get.

LOL Hermida is 24, was one of the 4 best hitting prospects in baseball (like 2 years ago), and has already had a better season than Cantu ever has. Hermida also has a much better minor league track record, and believe it or not, is actually a much better defensive player. He's slumping now, but to compare him to Cantu is actually more unfair to Cantu than anything. Even the biggest Cantu supporters agree he is nothing but a league average at best stop gap. Is there anyone in their right mind who thinks that about Hermida? Besides all that, I'm not sure what your point is. Are you trying to imply that Cantu is actually the better player, but since so many people hate him, he gets treated unfairly? Cantu doesn't really slump. He's a .700 OPS player who has 3 or 4 good games in a row every 10 games or so to get his OPS to a little more digestible .750-.775. Those 3-4 good games aren't enough to justify the 10 games where he does nothing. Especially if he's going to continue being our worst defensive player. And I wouldn't have a problem with Cantu if there weren't at least the possibility McPherson could do better. Why not give him a shot, and if he doesn't Cantu stays? What harm does that do? Where is the "Defense" first crowd when it comes to Cantu? Weren't most of you Cantu defenders also the ones constantly bitching about defense last year?

It was a good season for a 2nd baseman, but it's not near as good as Hermida's last season. His counting stats aren't as good because Fredi batted him 8th most of the season because he was a dummy last year with his lineups, but that doesn't mean Hermida wasn't the better player.
