May 31, 200818 yr PHILADELPHIA -- The turnstiles may not reflect it, but the television ratings indeed are showing there is interest in the Marlins in South Florida. Wednesday's 7-6 loss in 12 innings to the Mets at Shea Stadium attracted the highest Marlins rating since 2006. According to figures released by FSN Florida, Wednesday's dramatic game drew a Nielsen household rating of 5.2, which was the most to watch the Marlins on TV since they faced the Mets on Sept. 13, 2006. That game drew a 5.49 rating. The peak of Wednesday's game came between 9:45-10 p.m. ET, where 7.1 households (more than 109,000) were tuned in during that period. The Nielsen ratings were from the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market, and it does not include Palm Beach County, which has almost 1 million residents. FSN Florida is the exclusive local television rightsholder for the Marlins. Games are televised locally on FSN Florida or its sister station, Sun Sports. FSN Florida also is a pro team partner with the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Rays. Of those Florida-based teams, the Marlins on TV typically rank at or near the top for FSN Florida. Marlins telecasts also stack up around the middle of the pack with all of MLB television ratings. In terms of home attendance, Florida ranks last in the league. FSN Florida will televise Saturday's game with the Phillies on FSN-HD, with Rich Waltz handling play-by-play and Tommy Hutton offering analysis. Craig Minervini is the pregame host and in-game reporter. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla

May 31, 200818 yr Now if only we could get people to actually go to games instead of watching on TV... Wanna tick some people off and find out who are the ones actually going to the games and the ones that just make lame excuses of why they don't go?? Have MLB enforce some variation of the NFL black out rule. For instance.....If "x" amount of tickets aren't sold for a game before a certain time frame prior to that game, black it out locally. It will never happen, but it sure would raise our attendance figures. Okay. Let the hate posts begin. And start with the excuses of why people don't go. But be original. LOL

May 31, 200818 yr Since 06' doesnt mean much... but its never bad, and I do expect it to rise with more wins.

Hey, where's the guy that takes the horse and buggy from central Dade County to the games???

Here is my excuse. I used to go to 6 games a year prior to 2002, when I started having health issues. I am now 28 and disabled, and I cannot go to games on my own, so I go with my dad when he has time, 2 games a year. Plus living on disability makes it a financial strain to go. Rest assured I will be in the new stadium for the first game. Original enough lol?
June 1, 200818 yr Money. Especially lately. High gas prices. I'd really like the Marlins to try a dollar day promo at some point. If they can't work it out with Huizenga then when they get their new stadium. I see that the Philles have a dollar hot dog day, and many other teams do as well. I'm convinced in my own mind that a promo with dollar dogs, sodas, and chips would draw a bunch.

For the Twins, every Wednesday home game is $4 bleacher tickets and $1 hot dogs with a Student I.D, and it significantly increases the amount of young people in the stands. The Marlins wouldn't even have to do the bleacher ticket discount (since that's not where they're making a ton of money), but just the $1 dog is a good idea. On a related note, $1 beers are a horrendous idea. Though I think they're smart enough not to consider that.
June 1, 200818 yr Does anyone know other teams ratings and how we compare? This was in the article: Marlins telecasts also stack up around the middle of the pack with all of MLB television ratings.

June 1, 200818 yr my problemwith raising the money issue is that the fish have some of the cheapest tix in the game and yet few go, rainouts really haven't been an issue yet few go, the team is playing great (yes thats me talking) and yet few go.... people say that will change with the new stadium.....well in 2011 gas prices will probably be close to what they are now, parking will be tricky for those w/o season tix, and the ticket prices have to be at least double what they are now.....wanna pay 75 bucks for a field box, maybe 90? people say build it and they will come? say that in Washington or Pittsburgh?! I hope I am wrong but aside from people coming a few times to see the place, I still think the "passion" is not there.....unless you have passion from your couch..... Lets hope the roof helps (72 degrees) and maybe when the kids get out of school attendance picks up this year, terribly disappointing so far.......

Didn't the Giants new stadium bring lots of fans in? I know a few teams experienced a rise in attendance after a new stadium. Its easy to look at the negative and forget about the positives.

Lets hope the roof helps (72 degrees) and maybe when the kids get out of school attendance picks up this year, terribly disappointing so far....... Yep, I agree. On the roof though, what makes anybody think that the policy will be to close the roof on account of heat. You think the team's going to close the roof on a perfectly sunny day. I think the roof is for rain events only. We're still going to have to deal with the heat, if you do the day games. I don't foresee more than 12000 breathing people at the game, in the new stadium, after the initial curiosity wears off. And that's going to wear off very quick, when people get hit with difficulty parking, and higher concession prices. For me, the only good of a new stadium is that it keeps the team here and on TV. I see myself going to 5-10 games a year, as opposed to the 30-40 games I go to now.
June 1, 200818 yr Well as for Washington and Pittsburgh, they both flat out stink. If the Marlins can field a competitive team, then they will draw fans. As for the roof being open on sunny days, if it is a nice day, then I would assume it would be open. But if it is the dead heat of summer, 90+ degrees, they will close the roof, for the comfort of the fans. I believe that is what they do in Milwaukee and Arizona!
June 2, 200818 yr last I checked they are very competitive, sure as hell better than Wash and Pittsburgh and last in the NL in attendance.......build and they won't come I guess.....

Our ticket price, relative to the rest of the league, doesn't change the fact that I have very little disposable income. I go to 15-20 games a year, and that is the absolute limit I can afford.

LOL Some people don't have the money to go to a lot of games. There it is. Pretty bad one. Goes right along with the theory that we get too many rain delays, which I already showed in another thread was not true. Last I saw, only a couple months ago, we were 24th in average ticket price. Are you saying that South Florida is one of the poorest areas of the country? There are 23 teams with a higher average ticket price and yet we are ranked last in attendance.

Guess you missed the point. I'm not saying every game needs to be a sell out like the NFL does. But put a number on how many tickets need to be sold "x" amount of time before first pitch or black it out. Say 20K, 48 hours before first pitch. We draw from a supposed fan base of over 4 mil. 20K dosen't seem like a high number to me, for any team.

Maybe 10-15 games a year. And after the new stadium smell wears off I don't see anyone taking up the slack of those games we aren't going to.
