Tucker to be odd man out?

Featured Replies

No mention of Hendrickson here but this could be pure speculation.

TUCKER IN ROTATION . . . FOR NOW

There are no plans to supplant rookie Ryan Tucker in the starting rotation, even though he has been struggling. Tucker gave up five runs in five innings Monday against the Nationals and has a 6.84 ERA.

He is scheduled to start Saturday in Colorado.

In all likelihood, Tucker will be replaced in the rotation when Josh Johnson is activated from the disabled list, perhaps by the middle of next week. Johnson is expected to make at least one more rehabilitation start in the minors.

Long reliever Doug Waechter is a candidate the Marlins could turn to if they want to make an immediate change. Waechter made 54 starts when he was with Tampa Bay from 2003-06. But the Marlins are pleased with the job Waechter has done in his role out of the bullpen.

sadly it will be Tucker and then Hendrickson, if only because of the veteren factor. It's not right because Hendrickson has been going downhill while Tucker has shown upside and maturity for his age, but it's the way things are.

Not drawing any comparisons between the two, but Miller didn't get his ERA under 6.85 until his 8th start. If the FO has plans of keeping Tucker in the rotation long-term they'll keep allowing him to take his lumps. But, hopefully they can move Hendrickson, call up Volstad and JJ, and move Tucker to the bullpen.

The first step in making a contending team better is to shakeup or redefine roles and see what improvement come from that. Then, if the results you're looking for aren't immediately there, it's off to the trading block to see what can be done via that route.

Waechter in the starting rotation will probably be 4.50-ish but with the demeanor and experience to not let the world cave in on him because something goes awry behind him. That in itself will be an improvement in the rotation.

Waechter could definitely be a decent #5 starter stopgap until Volstad is ready. He's already shown he can be effective over 4 innings. What's three more outs?

Regarding Volstad, in no way is this a put-down of his talent, but a) he's hasn't been that great in AA, let him stay there for the entire season and b) if the Marlins are going to try and upgrade the team to stay a contender, a pitcher with major league experience or four or five years in the high minors is in my estimation the way to go.

Another thing on Volstad - he's not on the 40-man roster. This brings up two issues:

1. We'd have to make space on the 40-man roster for him, either by DFA'ing somebody or moving a Brett Carroll to the 60-day DL.

2. I'm pretty sure we don't need to add him to the 40-man roster this off-season - I think it's 4 years after signing for somebody his age. If we don't bring him up this year, that leaves a 40-man roster spot open this winter for somebody else and it means we don't have use an option on him next spring if he for some reason doesn't make the team.

I remember his first outing, everyone was saying how good he is, and we know everyone first game up is always good, other team don't know him, after the real pitcher is on the mound for a couple of start, the cry is to send him down. I don't know why we get so excited when someone is up for their first game.

lets pray tucker produces a pitching masterclass on saturday and makes it very hard to send him down considering hendricksons awful form

i would prefer releasing hendrickson at the all star break and going with a olsen-nolasco-miller-johnson-tucker rotation until sanchez returns at the end of july and replaces tucker then

You guys should check out Hendrickon's RP splits from last season before going all gung-ho on releasing him. He's not completely worthless. He'd probably be pretty good in short bursts.

if you look at his starts lately, they suggest he's a long reliever, as well.

I like Waechter in the pen though...I hope we don't change that.

Tucker will be good, but at this point he isn't quite ready. He should go back to AAA for now and come up if we have any other injuries but probably could be in the starting rotation next year at the latest. He has potential but he isn't ready to be a big-leaguer yet.

If Tucker goes, thats fine. He is still very raw. I am willing to do about anything to get rid of Hendrickson though. His career numbers looked like a bum before he came in, and he has been nothing but since.

And you want to take that chance come late September if this team is still contending and you need every strong performance you can get? Short burst are good for April and May, not August and September.
