Why is there no choice for great that isn't overachieving?

Yea, that didnt make much sense did it? lol

Fixed.

what i liked:

starting pitching over the last few games (not counting miller)

turning the road trip around

team relying on the long ball

what i didnt like:

starting pitching over the course of the 1st half

too much long balls not so much produced runs

overall: i think we can turn it around in the 2nd half with sanchez coming back and mitre too

Why is there no choice for great that isn't overachieving?

The Marlins did kind of overachieve in the 1st half, as evident by their Pythagorean W-L record of 45-50, while their real life record was 50-45. They scored 462 runs and allowed 490 runs, so they have been lucky to be where they are now. Obviously the main problem in the 1st half was the starting pitching, but it has been improving of late. And with guys starting to get healthy (JJ, Anibal) and guys coming in and stepping it up (Volstad), I can definitely see an improvement in the second half. If the starting pitching does better, there is no doubt in my mind that we can be in the race until the very end, because you know the offense is going to continue to rake. It's going to be fun watching this 2nd half. Can't wait :D

I don't put too much into our pyth. We've had a ton of games where we were blown out, which really tips the pyth.

True, but when you've scored 28 runs less than you've given up, it's kinda obvious. Blowouts or not.

The Marlins have thus far played over their heads in what surprisingly has been a weak division. The Fish have been fortunate that until recently no team has gotten hot in the division. If some things went the Marlins way I could still see them contending in the end. First off with the exception of Hammer the Marlins have been relatively healthy with everyday players so they'll need to keep that up. The starting pitching has shown flashes of their promise with a few exceptions. The team as relied wayyyy tooo much on the long ball and will have to improve on its situational hitting. The thing that I think will have to improve is their defense. I do like the 3-way platoon with Cantu and Helms/Jacobs. But it all boils down to pitching and defense that win championships, it looks like the pitching could be there.

I really believe the key to going far in baseball is having

Starters going 7 innings + with a decent (doesnt have to be perfect bullpen) aka 2003

I voted for good (with some things left to fix).

I am very proud of this team. They never give up, and always provide us with the unexpected (although at times that's not good, lol).

But seriously...they're the kind of team a person can get addicted to. Much different from last year, when I felt the team was done as soon as it trailed a ballgame.

Lets hope the final 67 are as exciting as the first 95.

Not "blowouts or not". Blowouts is it. After today's game, our pyth is going to tip quite a bit. That doesn't mean that today's win should count as 2.

Good point Erick, last year was ... mmm nothing like this year.

I am delightfully surprised at how well the Marlins have done, and with the division the way it is there is no reason why we can't win our first division title ever.

:gofish

We have 2 big holes we need to fill

1. a reliable reliever

2. an everyday catcher

we have been looking for both, we will not find an everyday catcher, David Ross may be able to Platoon, and Joe Borowski can become a reliable set-up man if he reverts to his 06 ways

so far this season has been good, we still have major holes to fill and have one of the worst starters ERA's in the MLB, which will change now that Volstad and JJ are in the rotation.

We have been extremely fortunate to be so close to the top, with all the injuries in our rotation and such.

Anyway these are somethings that need to be fixed if this team wants to go anywhere, but my main complaint:

Strike Outs. We strike out more than any other team in baseball. I don't know if this can be changed, but it's a problem that has to be addressed at some point.

i voeted good but things can get fixed.

i think our BP will get better with good SP and they dont have to run out there every day for like 4 innings. With the exception of miller our SP is coming around with guys coming of injuries and our hitting is great. Alos I know our D has been bad but i blame that partially on the SP and BP who were walking guys like crazy earl in the year and if youve ever played behind a pitcher who walks alot of guys it terrible no matter what level. So with good SP i think we should really come around in the 2nd half. I would like some one else in the rotation to step up also besides olsen and nolasko.

I think youd have to sacrafice some our homers though.

I agree with the aforementioned holes but also an improvement to defense all around the diamond. Cantu left behind his defensive woes and now the rest of the team or infield (maybe not so much Uggla) needs to improve defense. It weighs on a team and its pitchers to give the opponent an extra out. I say go get Perry Hill (if i remember his name correctly) I believe Luis Castillo gave one of his own Gold Gloves to him. We definately need Hill back as our infield coach.

Strikeouts are kind of overrated. Sure, it's not great to lead the league either, but it's not the worst thing ever.

League average on-base percentage is .329, we are at .322. As long as we stay around there, strikeouts don't really bother me.
