August 4, 200817 yr Luis Castillo definately belongs on the list, and basically should be the only one besides Conine. I still vote for Conine for all the obvious reasons, but if any player should be considered moreso for their on-field skills, Castillo should be. 3 Gold Gloves, an All Star, and an exceptional contact hitter (the kind who could have a 35 game hit streak). Not to mention a ring as well. And if you needed something to top it off, think back to every non-Marlins fan's most memorable Marlins moment - and who was it that hit that famous foul ball to Steve Bartman before then contributing to that big inning that changed the series?
August 4, 200817 yr How is Luis Castillo not on this poll? And what about CJ? One of the most underrated Marlins of all time, and he was a big part of the '97 world series team...even stuck around through the dark years after that. And he caught those no-hitters. Just to make it clear, these are just the options on the ESPN poll... but I agree. CJ especially, doesn't get enough love, but his stats aren't that impressive. Marlins fans know though that he played a big role for our ball club before and after '97, and he also caught 3 no-hitters. And as far as who will win, among Marlins fans its easily Conine, but because its an ESPN poll I'm curious if enough people who aren't Marlins fans vote, a guy with better career numbers like Sheffield or who more recently played well for Florida like Cabrera, might win it. Nationally Conine isn't THAT impressive, he just seems like a guy with solid numbers who played for us a long time, but for us he's Mr. Marlin. Charles Johnson was great but like Rent said his "numbers" were not very impressive overall. Still a great Fish!
August 4, 200817 yr It was like watching a former Marlins All-Star gathering when I went to a Tigers-Pirates spring training game in Bradenton this year. Renteria, Sheffield, Pudge, Miggy and the D-Train, who made a horrendous, wild, short-lived start that only foreshadowed what was to come. Oh, and Leyland was there too.
August 4, 200817 yr Dontrelle may be terrible now but he did great things for this team while he was here. People are quick to forget sh*t. He accomplished more than any other pitcher we've had. The only one with 20 wins, ROY, and runner up for the CY YOUNG award!! His troubles now have nothing to do with those accomplishments.
