August 8, 200818 yr http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/08...etia/index.html Well, it was only a matter of time before the Ruskis tried to take back what was "theirs", or at least, try to disrupt the region for its "Westernization" after 91.
August 8, 200818 yr I feel the chill of a second cold war coming on What makes you think it ever ended? Those same nukes from the 'first' cold war are still pointed at the U.S. and those same nukes are still pointed at good ole 'Russia'.
August 8, 200818 yr Hopefully we will be able to stop them before they get to Macon, I would hate for the Russians to invade Florida.
August 8, 200818 yr Author Hopefully we will be able to stop them before they get to Macon, I would hate for the Russians to invade Florida. You kid, but I wonder how many people even know where the hell Georgia is (and I do mean the state lol)
August 9, 200818 yr They're better off invading Georgia the country than Georgia the state. :mischief
August 9, 200818 yr Georgia is about to declare war on Russia. The president is waiting approval from the parliament.

Yeah things are gonna get ugly before they get better, and they are already saying that there's 2000 people dead. The Caucasus is one F'ed up region.
August 9, 200818 yr that entire region has been ruined because of the Soviet Union. So many countries mashed together that shouldn't be. We see the oubreak of the Kurds, the Ossentians, then Kosovo broke away to become its own country. Really the region is formed into countries by land, with different languages, religions and cultures in each one and it causes problems.

Indeed, and you can blame Stalin for many of those land-mashing mistakes in the Caucasus.
August 9, 200818 yr If it hadn't been for the Soviet Union, the Nazis probably would have won the Caucasus (and the war in the east) with ease.
August 9, 200818 yr he is pushing hard for the EU, and much like Turkey their location seems to bother other EU nations. I am sure if they play this "war" right they will get in both the EU and NATO.
August 9, 200818 yr I've been listening to President Saakashvili on TV and he sounds like someone I would like. However, it might all be phony rhetoric because he wants Georgia to join NATO. Saakashvili is American-educated, which is a large part of why he has aligned Georgia to the West.
August 10, 200818 yr Author he is pushing hard for the EU, and much like Turkey their location seems to bother other EU nations. I am sure if they play this "war" right they will get in both the EU and NATO. Well, if this turns into another Chechnya-like disaster war for Russia, maybe they'll make a stronger case, but I doubt any of them, including Armenia, will ever become part of the EU. The EU still depends on a lot of oil and natural gas from Russia. Accepting them into the EU would certainly anger Russia even more.
August 11, 200818 yr The current claim is that Georgian territory is now being invaded by the Russians, and Georgian troops are preparing to defend their capital, Tbilisi. That the Russians expanded their invasion even after all Georgian troops left South Ossetia.
August 11, 200818 yr Our only hope really is that Garry Kasparov leads a revolution in Russia. He better hurry up then... It now looks like Russian forces have taken control of the city of Gori, which is inside the recognized boundaries of Georgia, and only 60 miles from the nation's capital of Tbilisi. There have already been reports that the Russians have launched airstrikes on targets within the Georgian capital, including the civilian airport.

These are all very bold movements for the Russians, I am surprised they are coming now --- I guess Putin needed a figure head to move along with his plans.

August 11, 200818 yr All things considered, the type of war this will likely degrade into has never favored Russia, which is odd considering their general ruthless approach to warfare. I actually expect Georgia to hang for a while, as they have a modern military, just not the manpower. I am also pulling for them as they are our little buddy.
