Jorge Cantu

Featured Replies

I think Jorge Cantu did a great job and hes the best hitter in the lineup i think they should give him and Uggla a long contract

He's eligible for arbitration, but should still be an affordable option, provides more consistent bat in the offense than Jake. It's dead horse material, but the ideal situation is to trade Jake for some quality bullpen arms, move Cantu to first and see what Dallas can do.

yes he should be our 3rd baseman next year with him gaby and dallas switching off at 1st

or

Cantu can play 3rd with Gaby at 1st vs lefties and play 1st with dallas at 3rd vs righties

Gaby > Dallas

You know, Mike Jacobs is actually out OPS-ing Cantu. .801 v.s. .789.

Personally I'm rooting for Gaby/McDallas corner IFers next year. Improved defense on both spots = woo

For McPherson...I'd stay with Jacobs.

The last thing the Marlins need to have is another "swing for the fences" guy, who K's at an awful rate...with inflated power #'s this year, in the minors. McPherson is also nothing to brag about, defensively, and he's not exactly a prospect anymore, either.

I for one feel that OPS overvalues SLG. And while Cantu's OBP hasn't been very good since the break, Jacob's is pathetic.

Back on topic: I'd love to see Cantu return. He's been the most consistent hitter in the lineup it seems.

Cantu also provides more versatility.

Cantu, while not good defensively, is also not the worst by far at his position (and considering Jacobs plays an easier position that Cantu has shown to be better in...it's, rather, sad).

I also think Cantu gets more love around here b/c he's come up with huge 2 out hits all year long. He's a solid situational hitter.

I'd certainly rather have Cantu at the plate than Jake, I just found that funny.

McPherson isn't anything to brag about defensively in terms of comparision to other players, but in comparision to Cantu he is. Cantu's probably the second worst 3B in the majors, ahead of only EE. Based of McPherson's past results, which is a rather decent sample size of 804, about 75% of a seasons worth, he has been good with the glove. Not much range, but he also gets what he's suppose to. You have to expect the whole back thing will have decreased his defense, but even then, there's no way he'd have fallen to where Cantu is.

We also potentially lose a ton of power next year. You're looking as much as Cody, Hammer, Uggla, and Jacobs being gone.

Dallas in entering his prime years and has huge huge power potential. Yes he strikes out a lot. So? He also walks a ton. He's not Mike Jacobs 2.0, there's a lot of differences between the two.

How many HR's do you think McPherson would hit in the bigs, if he played next year?

I'm guessing at most 30, to be honest.

K's might be overrated, but 168 in 448 official AB's...in AAA? What would that translate to when he's facing better pitching in the bigs?

I mean...he's always had power potential, and this isn't the first time he's put up really good stats in the minors.

But the surplus of K's, and the fact that Dolphin Stadium is a HUGE difference from the bandbox in Albuquerque, especially for left-handers...I think some people are overrating the guy.

The + with McPherson is his career .380 .OBP in the minors, which at least shows that he displays patience, unlike Jacobs.

IS cantu really that bad defensively anyway? I mean, i know his numbers are terrible. But over the past couple of months, he's been pretty good. I wouldnt mind seeing Cantu at 3B and Gaby at first next year.

Nobody's expecting him to come in and OPS 1.000+ like he was doing before getting injured and wearing down.

Odds are I would say I would expect an .800 OPS with decent defense. That's better than we got out of the two corner IFers we have this year (Although Cantu at first I think would be roughly average defensively), and I don't see how it would be overating him considering he put up a .776 OPS 2 years ago with a bad back.

But, you're also talking about a guy entering into his power prime, I could also see him putting up .850-.900 OPS

I'd like to see him get some starts in September to see what he's got.

Keep cantu. really really need to keep cantu. ive always liked him since back in TB and he really has been our most consistent hitter.

Get rid of Jacobs and then have Dallas and Gaby for the other spot(s)

His body is crapping out on him. You have to remember he's been out of baseball for a long time, and a season is very, very long. I wouldn't expect much out of him right now.

Just some things on McPherson...

If you look at his splits this year, while they're solid, they're not exactly eye-popping for a 28 year old in AAA.

His .OPS was 201 points higher at home; more telling is the fact that his .SLG ended up 178 points higher at home than on the road.

Also...most of his domination came against RH pitching. Not sure how much we should put into this but McPherson only hit .231 against LH pitching this year. His .OPS against lefties (.857) was a lot worse than against righties, whom he dominated, with an .OPS of 1.041.

You have to assume there's some flaw in his stats, this year.

Another stat is the fact that of his 42 HR's, 62% of them came in the park known as an advantage to hitters...in Albuquerque.

Just some things to think about...

Yes, with McPherson you do want somebody to platoon with him, but it's not hard finding a RH bench bat (Helms, Boone, yadda yadda)

Not that I agree with McPherson starting for us next year (I'd rather go Cantu at 3B, Sanchez at 1B)...but if McPherson does end up starting and we need to platoon him with someone...Miller23 mentioned a good choice the other night, for that role: Rich Aurilia.

Helms hasn't really done well this year in that LH platoon guy role, imo. This will be his 2nd year in a row with an .OPS under .800, against LH pitching. This year his .OPS is just at .720 against LH pitching.

He's provided more as a defensive replacement, than anything else.

He's eligible for arbitration, but should still be an affordable option, provides more consistent bat in the offense than Jake. It's dead horse material, but the ideal situation is to trade Jake for some quality bullpen arms, move Cantu to first and see what Dallas can do.

Gaby > Dallas

While I am not high on either Gaby or McPhereson, at least McPhereson has power.

Gaby has better defense, a better eye at the plate, and hits for contact which is something we need.
