Maybin, Stanton, Morrison, and Dominguez are all top 50 overall prospects in baseball right now, and Skipworth has the ability to get into that group in a year or two. I consider that elite.

September 15, 200817 yr the thing is Stanton is 18 and hopefully he'll be a mature mlb hitter by 20 but Morrison looks great and id like to se him up in 2010 with Dominguez and Stanton in 2011 with Possibly Skipworth if we get Lucky

Raynor, Maybin, Stanton Dominguez, Ramirez, Coghlen, Morrison Skipworth I like it I'm a bit concerned about the pitching depth though. All the best pitching is already in the MLB. With Maybin in CF, it would be pretty stupid to put a non power threat like Raynor in a corner. He may turn out to be a good player, but we can do better with that slot. You have to put Cousins/Petersen as most likely to be a future corner starters from the minors. Although I wouldn't be so fast to dump Hermida. He had an .870 OPS over a lot of PA last year. There is still a lot of potential. How is it stupid to put Raynor in left? The only stupid thing is to overload on power hitters again. Raynor gives us the speed aspect and the potential lead off hitter we need to finally move Hanley down in the order. Cameron Maybin is NOT a lead off hitter. Just because baseball tradition says that corner outfielders are usually power hitters, doesn't make it right. It doesn't matter where your power hitters play in the field as long as you have a balanced line up.

You want to get the most production out of every spot in the lineup and field. You do not strive to type-cast hitters into roles. Your argument fails for the same reason you use to support it - you say who cares about baseball tradition of getting power from the corners, but your argument is baseball tradition by having "speed" at the top and this makes a "balanced" lineup. Both lines of thought are irrelevant, as it is all about getting the most production possible from every spot, period. Who cares what they bring to the table, as long as they produce. Yea, Raynor looks from his minor league career he could be this cool high 700s OPS guy with a decent OBP and some speed. That is typically great in CF, a position it is harder to find players at, but we have a pending .850+ monster there with Maybin. Sticking a high 700 OPS in production in LF is dumb, when you can find marginal (not even good, completely ordinary) bashers like Cody, for basically free anywhere that are just flat out better. Let alone, the strive to longterm develop big time corner OF, which coupled with our current 2B/SS/CF core that are very very productive offensive players, would make for an absolutely ridiculous team. You don't just "play a traditional lead off hitter style batter," when there are better options elsewhere, just because that is what typical lineups tell you to play. It will be very hard for Raynor's speed and defense to outweigh sheer slugging, without a distinct OBP advantage, (which he could might have over someone like Jacobs sub .300 OBP, but probably not versus Cody, Hammer, and Hermida (when he isn't being a jerk) type OF), over a player with a lot more slugging potential. I doubt Raynor consistently gets to the .370-.380 OBP level in the majors where he could be viewed as a consistent corner player. I would love him to prove me wrong, but it's unlikely unless he just turns into a badass and converts his AA line perfectly over to the bigs. All I'm saying is, he shouldn't be viewed as a starting LF/RF. If we didn't have Maybin, yes. Absolutely without a doubt a candidate for serious playing time in CF. But that's not happening with out organizational depth. He looks like a perfect 4th OF on paper to me. And I'm pretty sure that's how the organization views him also as Fleming said he only sees 3 starting caliber players in AA - Maybin, Coghlan, G. Sanchez. To say Maybin is not a leadoff hitter, so what? I didn't say I wanted him there in the first place. I agree with you Hanley needs to go to 2nd or 3rd in the order to take advantage of his slugging, but the Marlins really just need to put anyone batting 1st. You'd like the highest OBP possible, but if the choice is something like Raynor .280/.350/.425, versus I don't know, some dude who hits .260/.325/.500 which we have a ton of right now, it is very silly to put Raynor in the lineup. Is this ideal? Absolutely not. But this is what we have, and you take the feast or famine production, as it is still more productive on it's face then having a little bit more OBP/Speed. The lineup positioning is not so distinct to create an advantage to Raynor here. And regardless, I expect the Marlins to have a lot of solid OBP guys next year that aren't downright nasty sluggers like an Uggla or McDallas - Gaby, Hermida (has to be better), Baker, maybe Coghlan if Uggla goes. We won't have a problems with lineup orientation, even if the team doesn't fit the traditional outdated baseball model of Juan Pierre batting first, a contact hitter who takes pitches behind him, and sluggers 3-5.

September 15, 200817 yr Also, Raynor is playing in the AFL. When you play in the AFL, you generally don't get september call ups. Coghlan might be up later in the month
