Florida Marlins like to sign Scott Proctor

The Marlins are expected to sign former Dodgers right-hander Scott Proctor to bolster a bullpen that has lost several veterans.

 

Proctor agreed to a one-year contract for $750,000, with another $250,000 in incentives, according to an industry source. But the deal is contingent on Proctor passing a physical, and he had elbow problems last season.

 

Proctor missed two months with elbow tendinitis in 2008 and underwent successful surgery in October to repair a tear in the flexor tendon. He is expected to be ready by spring training.

 

Proctor, who turns 32 on Friday, was 2-0 with a 6.05 ERA in 41 games for the Dodgers last season. He allowed 65 base-runners (41 hits, 24 walks) in 38 2/3 innings but struck out 46.

 

Proctor was more effective in the two previous seasons. He led the American League with 83 appearances for the Yankees in 2006, finishing 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA. He also pitched in 83 games for the Yankees and Dodgers in 2007, finishing 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA.

 

The Marlins needed another right-handed reliever after trading Kevin Gregg to the Cubs for minor-league reliever Jose Ceda; losing Doug Waechter to Kansas City; and non-tendering Joe Nelson, who signed with Tampa.

 

The Marlins bullpen figures to consist of right-handers Matt Lindstrom (the expected closer), Logan Kensing, Proctor and Leo Nu?ez (acquired from Kansas City for Mike Jacobs). One or two left-handers should make the team from a group including Re nyel Pinto, Taylor Tankersley and Dan Meyer (picked up off waivers from Oakland).

 

Several others, including right-handers Burke Badenhop and Ryan Tucker, also will compete for bullpen jobs.

 

Also Thursday, veteran right-handed reliever Derrick Turnbow signed with Texas, passing up offers from the Marlins and Pirates. Turnbow reportedly will make $935,000 -- more than the Marlins offered -- plus as much as $325,000 in incentives.

If he's healthy what a shot in the arm this signing is.

this would be awesome. he would become our setup guy in the pen and is way better than nelson so everyone can stop complaining about non tending him. proctor would definitely a nice pickup

that's what i think our bullpen will look like next season if the signing happens and no injuries occur. actually i expect De La Cruz to be in their instead of Hurk but cruz sucks but since he's out of options they probably have to keep him in the majors. either way it's a pretty good pen and as long as every one stays healthy and lindstrom doesn't fail as closer it'll be solid.

That would be a sick ass signing.

Scott Proctor took the loss in his third inning of relief Saturday against the Giants.

Proctor threw 40 pitches today after throwing 24 on Thursday and 22 last night. Manager Joe Torre's decision to leave him in to throw a third inning was one of the worst managerial moves to date this season. Proctor was actually allowed to hit for himself in the top of the 13th, even though there was a man on and the Yankees still had two players (Chris Basak and Wil Nieves) available off the bench. Also, Mariano Rivera had not been used and the Yankees had Roger Clemens up and warming in case he was needed.

Scott Proctor will not be suspended after getting ejected from Friday's game for throwing at and hitting Kevin Youkilis.

This is hard to believe, especially given that Proctor has already been suspended once this year for similar behavior. Speculation was that he'd get a longer ban this time than the four games he received for drilling Yuniesky Betancourt last month. However, it was obvious he was throwing at the batter during the Seattle game. Last night's might have been an accident.

 

Anyone who throws at Kevin Youkilis and hits him is okay in my book. :thumbup (only kidding but I couldn't resist)

How'd you come to that conclusion? They are very different pitchers.

 

Pinto is a groundball pitcher, Proctor is more of a flyball pitcher.

 

Proctor has higher velocity on his fastball and his main off-speed pitch is a slider, with slight use of a curveball and even slighter use of a changeup. Pinto, of course, uses mainly his changeup, sometimes a slider, and has no curveball to speak of.

 

Very very different pitchers.

i would. allowing 2 earned runs every inning you pitch is pretty bad and for every strikeout he'll walk 3 people. he's still young but as of right now i would consider him a sucky player. hopefully next season he proves me wrong.

This is a major league contract? :blink:

The way I read it there isn't a contract yet and I don't know if they'll put him on the 40 man roster or not. Considering he's still rehabbing from surgery they could go a number of ways.

I'm all for bringing in a veteran back of the pen hurler especially with Nelson, Rhodes, Hendrickson etc. gone but is this really the kind of veteran we want?

The Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! believe they have a found a replacement for reliever Joe Nelson with right-hander Scott Proctor.

 

According to a baseball source, the Marlins have agreed to a one-year deal with Proctor pending a physical.

 

A product of Florida State and native of Stuart, Proctor became a free agent when the Dodgers opted not to offer him a 2009 contract. Last season he was 2-0 with a 6.06 ERA in 11 appearances. He missed most of 2008 with an elbow injury that required surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon and shave a bone spur.

 

Proctor, who turns 32 in April, is expected to be ready in time for spring training next month.

 

Since breaking in with the Yankees in 2004, Proctor is 16-10 with 132 walks and 256 strikeouts in 297 career innings. All but one of his 262 lifetime outings have been as a reliever.

 

In other bullpen news, right-hander Derrick Turnbow chose the Texas Rangers over the Marlins and Pirates. The Marlins may have interest in offering right-handed reliever Jesus Colome, who the Nationals released during the winter meetings, a minor league deal.

Well, I don't think he's a bad reliever. He's been overused several times, however.

His #'s from season to season have been very up & down.

 

The Marlins seem to be pretty fortunate with relievers, so this could be a good find. He's an upgrade / a power arm. I would like it if it were a minor league deal, though. Doesn't sound like it.

In order to be a righty in the Marlins bullpen...you must, at least, throw a fastball at 95 mph.

If there's one thing we've learned this offseason...it's that.

You know, because you asked Erick I went and checked the Yankees' roster because as we all know Sergio Mitre signed with them and is in post-surgical mode. He is not on their 40 man roster.

 

They said Dallas mcPherson was "ready" for spring training and we all saw how relative to everyone else he wasn't. It very well may be that being ready for spring traing and really being ready for spring training are two different things. First he has to pass a physical, then get a deal done, and show he's ready to pitch competitively again after surgery. I don't think we have to worry too much at the moment about him grabbing a roster spot.

I'm not denying that he can still throw a bit. I was referring to his off the field behaviors.

I wasn't twisting anything. You called him a "right-handed version of Pinto". If that's not comparing them as pitchers, I don't know what is.

 

I was comparing a certain trait both pitchers contain, not an overall comparison.

Another thing is if he does pass his physical and is indeed ready by spring (both of which still aren't for sure yet), are we going to be able to use him on a regular basis after such complicated surgery and after being overused for his entire career?
