Tank and Sanchez

Featured Replies

Tank has options, he'll go to AAA no big deal.

If they send Gaby down, like they should and carry a 4th outfielder, 3B won't be a problem with McPherson/Bonifacio taking RHP, and Helms LHP. They will be batting 8th so it's not like these are going to be primary guys that are carrying the lineup. McPherson will hack the right handers, Helms will hit lefties a little bit, and maybe EB forces some errors while bunting to get on base once in awhile. We'll get some production out of them. I'm not to worried about McDallas or Gaby's spring stats, they'll each hit a bit at some point.

they don't need a 4th outfielder and you don't send a .305 MVP minor league life time hitter down, because you want to ,after 25 at bats hitting .160 .this kid will hit the sh*t out of the ball as he has for the last 4 years .Bonafacio & Andino can play outfield .and when Amezega comes back you have your 4th outfielder. I think both Gaby and McDallas make this team.Gaby as the 1B and McDallas as lefty of the bench .

I mean, your bias is just comical at this point. I said, and it's bolded, I'm not worried about spring stats, yet this is your first line of defense for Gaby. Do you even read these posts, or do you immediately start bashing your keyboard with whatever as soon as you see the word "gaby."

Second, Bonifacio, Andino, and Amezaga are not 4th outfielders. They should be the teams 5th (or 6th) option. The Marlins are going to need a guy with some pop off the bench to play as a 4th outfielder. Bench power is a very valuable, and necessary, thing. The Marlins are going to be screwed if their bench is 5 guys with under .400 slugging percentages. We'll have to pray the starting lineup gets it done everyday because the bench is only going to slap a few singles. Yea, maybe Carroll, or Miller, or whoever is not ideal, but it's a lot better than carrying pure slap hitters.

Third, I do not agree with your wild belief that Gaby will become an all star MVP candidate, but I do think he could turn into a Sean Casey/James Loney type first baseman with a nice .290/.350/.450(ish) line and not embarrass himself at 1B defensively. I think that's a pretty good ball player, and a really nice player to have. What I want to do here is not purely performance related - I want him in NOLA for 10 weeks to start this season to delay his arbitration clock for a full year so we get to keep Gaby at a cheaper price for more years. This is really important to the Marlins if Gaby turns into half the player you think he will turn into.

The difference between Gaby, and setting up a McDallas, Helms, and Bonifacio platoon at 3B and keeping an extra outfielder on the roster, is not so big where we NEED Gaby on this roster for performance issues. The Marlins are going to be OK with the other guys for the first part of the season. He'll get his chance this year. It's not going to be a big deal if it's this summer. It'll be a mistake if we carry him to start the year versus some sort of outfielder.

you have your opinion and I think your wrong .I have my opinion and I think and right. you don't have a competitive

team by platooning player last year Fredy did it because of lousy 1B defense.

and not agree with me on Gaby MVP and so on .he did it in the minors every year.why wouldn't he do it in the majors.

You make a platoon when your personnel calls for it. We have a guy with a career .819 OPS vs left handers with Helms, and McPherson is probably going to hit 20-25 HR and BB 50-60 times if he gets 400 PA against right handers this year, even if he strikes out in 150 of those PA. Gaby fits in longterm if he can hit enough to keep Morrison in left field. There would still be a "platoon" at the MLB level if Gaby is up. He's not going to be an outright starter unless he really really hits, and you're pretty much the only person that thinks he will.

And please. Because a dude wins the MVP of the Southern League, does not mean he is going to start have 1.100 OPS seasons like Pujols, or hit 50 HR/140 RBI like Howard, and start winning MVP awards. If he turns into a decent regular, that would be a great comp for Gaby. Myself calling him a future Casey/Loney is very generous.

I almost see him like a Willingham, with more contact and less power. Just a professional hitter, that's going to give you solid numbers year in and year out.

So basically, you think he is Sean Casey or James Loney. :lol

I see a brighter future than Sean Casey, but a Loney? Maybe at max potential.

I was just giving some of our other readers a more direct comparison.

I don't think you realize how good Sean Casey was during his career. He hit .302/.367/.447 (.814) player, with a 477/577 BB/K rate, and three peak power years of over 20 home runs and .900 OPS's. If you see Gaby having a brighter future than that, we just hit the lottery. Loney is at .303/.353/.480 (.833) right now, and hit .772 last year. There really isn't a difference between Casey and Loney. They are incredibly similar ball players - contact bats with 20 HR power in a peak year. Gaby's obviously right handed, but these are the best recent comparables for him. Willingham is a very different player.

Wow, I actually was not aware of those stats from Casey, and you are very correct.

My comparison to Willingham was merely meant to compare the two as professional hitters. Sanchez should hit for a higher average, K less, and homer less.

Gaby Sanchez = Ryan Garko

Garko has a lot more power potential, has a moderate BB rate, and whiffs in bundles.

You guys are killing me with these comps today.

My Gaby comp is Garrett Atkins with a little less pop.

Similar MiLB numbers:

Sanchez: .305/.397/.487

Atkins: .317/.397/.476

Of course, Atkins is most likely a product of his Coors Field environment (Humador or not) judging by his career home/away splits [.337/.394/.527 Home, .260/.328/.424 Away] But if you average out the two, it comes out to about .300/.360/.475-ish, and I think Gaby can put up something close to that, which for many positions would be pretty good, but since 1b is such a highly offensive position, he would only be about middle-of-the-road.

Garko is a great platoon guy.

I see Gaby Sanchez producing about the same.
