Tank and Sanchez

Featured Replies

With the way Gaby is going now dallas looks to be playing 3rd with cantu moving to first but in actuality i think they would be better with cantu at 3rd.

As for Tank i dont know what the hell has happened to this guy but i think after today hes done. Dan Meyer will make the team.

I agree, I think Dallas will be in the opening day lineup. I do think that will be as a third baseman, though.

I personnaly think tank has lost all confidence. I might be wrong but wast he one of our top picks a few years ago.

For those that tout the importance of defense, this is a great idea.

For those that tout the importance of financial management (re: sending Gaby down to AAA), this is a great idea.

For those that tout the importance of splits/matchups, this is a great idea.

And...Dallas McPherson has done what, exactly, to EARN a spot as a starter on this team?

i think cantu was great at first but he also made some great strides mid year at third. Dallas would be better at first because he is bigger and taller.

And...Dallas McPherson has done what, exactly, to EARN a spot as a starter on this team?

The dude has never done well in spring training, it's no secret. Uggla is the same way, he's got three homers but besides that he looks lost (and has 15 K's already). He's been showcasing his skills for years, the guy deserves a freakin' chance. We don't have anyone else more qualified or talented than him to pick from, anyway.

Pretty much this...

Unless you want to argue that Uggla hasn't earned a starting spot... in which case, you'll use track records, which I know you know McPherson has against RHP, with Helms as a complement.

The "dude" is playing for a spot. Just b/c he's always struggled in Spring Training, as you say, doesn't mean he deserves a spot. Because really...he doesn't.

Also...if you do put McPherson at a starting spot...please put McPherson/Helms b/c that's what it would be. McPherson wouldn't play against left-handed pitching, I'm sure.

But it does mean that you have to take that into account when determining whether or not he deserves a spot.

Exactly. And, to use Uggla once again as an example, he probably wouldn't have ever gotten the opportunity he did to become a two-time All-Star if it weren't for the simple fact that we had nobody else to play second base in 2006. He was playing in double-A, and the stats were there, but scouts didn't love him. We gave him an opportunity by default. If anything, McPherson is in that same situation. He's proven it at every level he's ever been at, he's hit MLB right handers well, and he's the best option we have.

But it does mean that you have to take that into account when determining whether or not he deserves a spot.

Hopefully this opens the door for Morrison to play 1B in June or July.

I've been thinking the same thing...

Tank has options, he'll go to AAA no big deal.

If they send Gaby down, like they should and carry a 4th outfielder, 3B won't be a problem with McPherson/Bonifacio taking RHP, and Helms LHP. They will be batting 8th so it's not like these are going to be primary guys that are carrying the lineup. McPherson will hack the right handers, Helms will hit lefties a little bit, and maybe EB forces some errors while bunting to get on base once in awhile. We'll get some production out of them. I'm not to worried about McDallas or Gaby's spring stats, they'll each hit a bit at some point.

Sanchez would bat 8th, I doubt McPherson would unless he struggles badly. Although, it's going to be tough for Fredi to make that lineup card, because you've got a lot of middle of the order guys in there. I would think McPherson would bat between 4th-6th, though.

Coming out the gates, if he's starting, he's hitting 8th.

It's basically been established that it's maybe #1, Bake #2. That leaves Hermida, Cantu, Uggla, Hanley, and Cody. None of which he should be hitting infront of. If he establishes himself, than yeah, move him infront of Cody, but that's about it.

Now if Baker moves down and somebody like Hermida hits #2, or Maybin isn't ready, whatever, than yeah, that also changes things. But coming out we already know the 1-3 is Maybin, Baker, Hanley. 4-6 is probably Cantu, Uggla, Hermida, leaving it to be againt Cody and Dallas. And yes, while we basically know with Cody we're getting a SLG-Driven mid-.700 OPS against RHP and we're hoing Dallas and be a middle ground OBP/SLG driven upper .700 OPS, Cody deserves the spot based off merit until Dallas uproots him.

they don't need a 4th outfielder and you don't send a .305 MVP minor league life time hitter down, because you want to ,after 25 at bats hitting .160 .this kid will hit the sh*t out of the ball as he has for the last 4 years .Bonafacio & Andino can play outfield .and when Amezega comes back you have your 4th outfielder. I think both Gaby and McDallas make this team.Gaby as the 1B and McDallas as lefty of the bench .

Hopefully this opens the door for Morrison to play 1B in June or July.

is this the Morrison that's hitting 2 for 11 .182 and has 1 good year in the minor and has not play a season at AA :banghead

Agree. I'll be shocked if this isn't the lineup.

Maybin < - Speed at the top, should produce a decent OBP with his BB prowess even if he hits like Rickie Weeks

Baker/Hermida < - Patient lefty that should produce good OBP and let Maybin do his thing on the bases

Hanley < - Everything

Cantu < - Marlins like his contact rates for cleanup over Uggla/Hermida/Cody who whiff more

Uggla < - Settled into this spot last year

Hermida/Baker < - Are just better than Cody and 3B Candidates vs RHP

Cody < - Straight hacking in the 7 hole

Whoever is playing the opposite corner of Cantu < - Because whoever it is, is the worst starter on the team that given day. McPherson here also splits up the lefties into the 6/8 holes

Easy.

I mean, your bias is just comical at this point. I said, and it's bolded, I'm not worried about spring stats, yet this is your first line of defense for Gaby. Do you even read these posts, or do you immediately start bashing your keyboard with whatever as soon as you see the word "gaby."

Second, Bonifacio, Andino, and Amezaga are not 4th outfielders. They should be the teams 5th (or 6th) option. The Marlins are going to need a guy with some pop off the bench to play as a 4th outfielder. Bench power is a very valuable, and necessary, thing. The Marlins are going to be screwed if their bench is 5 guys with under .400 slugging percentages. We'll have to pray the starting lineup gets it done everyday because the bench is only going to slap a few singles. Yea, maybe Carroll, or Miller, or whoever is not ideal, but it's a lot better than carrying pure slap hitters.

Third, I do not agree with your wild belief that Gaby will become an all star MVP candidate, but I do think he could turn into a Sean Casey/James Loney type first baseman with a nice .290/.350/.450(ish) line and not embarrass himself at 1B defensively. I think that's a pretty good ball player, and a really nice player to have. What I want to do here is not purely performance related - I want him in NOLA for 10 weeks to start this season to delay his arbitration clock for a full year so we get to keep Gaby at a cheaper price for more years. This is really important to the Marlins if Gaby turns into half the player you think he will turn into.

The difference between Gaby, and setting up a McDallas, Helms, and Bonifacio platoon at 3B and keeping an extra outfielder on the roster, is not so big where we NEED Gaby on this roster for performance issues. The Marlins are going to be OK with the other guys for the first part of the season. He'll get his chance this year. It's not going to be a big deal if it's this summer. It'll be a mistake if we carry him to start the year versus some sort of outfielder.

the reason you bat Gaby 8th is. you want to put your rookie were he will gain confidence. if you check Gaby has hit 4th in every level and by July Gaby will be hitting 5th or 6th on this team.

And just to let you know. You can't dismiss Gaby's spring stats, and then criticize Morrison for his. Show some consistency if you want to be taken seriously.
