Maels Rodriguez

He was real good in cuba with over 200 K's and throws 100 MPH. I hope the Yankees dont get him now. We are the ones that need bullpen help!

Don't get your hopes up. His price might go higher than Contreras' last year. As a recent ESPN.com article stated, there is no price limit for good pitching.

I have to be skeptical of him until he actually plays here. No defector has yet to live up to his hype.

Remember Osvaldo Fernandez?

uh........was Contreras worth the money?

without a doubt. you wait and see.

about cuban defectors:

some of the hype surrounding the cuban defectors was unfounded, as most of them came here with some baggage.

ariel prieto had nasty stuff, but the truth is not even in cuba he lived up to his potential.

osvaldo fernandez was a stud, but a little long in the tooth and with arm problems

rene arocha: look up to the guy above, except he was older and his arm problems worst

livan hernandez: one of cuba's top prospects, but still a prospect. he has shown flashes of his potential at times, i don't think there's any doubt that when he's fully commited he is a stud.

el duque: long in the tooth (really long, he's about 40 now) and hadn't pitched for 2 years.

contreras is the only one that has gotten to the majors in his prime, and i think the times he started he showed he was stud; he didn't fare quite as well coming off the bullpen.

He's not worth that much by a long-shot. The only reason he's making that much is because Steinbrenner ordered Cashman to get him away from the Red Sox at any cost.

what do you base that on?

It's official--he defected to play MLB. We can only hope...

A bunch of experts have us getting one of the 2 defectors. Both would be valuable...Maels for the obvious reasons and the 2B because of Castillo's departure.

what do you base that on? Several reasons:

1. Spend part of the season in the minors

2. Made 8 MILLION this season

3. went 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in the postseason

3. went 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in the postseason the year is 4 years long, so the time spent in the minors is no biggie, that was part of the adaptation process.

made barely over 5 millions this season, not 8, he makes most of the money in the last 2 years of the contract.

0 - 2, 5.73 era is deceiving, as he had 2 bad outings, but was lights out in the other ones. besied, he proved trhough the season he wasn't as effective off the bullpen.

He'd be nice to get Hooper/Valdez/Erickson some competition.

deffinitely and he could be gotten cheap too. he's deffinitely a better ball player than those guys, my only concern is his age and avility to adapt, other than that everything's fine. maybe he can pull an ichiro, wouldn't surprise me.

this guy is 24 years old. hes like signing a #1 draft pick. but sadly he will find Contreras type money from a team that can afford it.

It will be easier than coming over from Japan especially since he's been playing against international level competition for all those years which is comparable to our AAA or AA.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did well here. I think it is worth at least giving them a shot. And 100 MPH man, you can't argue with that.

the pitcher is can't miss unless his health fails him, the guy is a stud.
