Postgame Thread - Opening Day

Featured Replies

This post made me chuckle.

Ans this post did not do much for me.

PS - I'll be back later to briefly and ambiguously respond to every single other post in the thread. So you all have that to look forward to.

YAY!

I was brought up in a different era of baseball where getting the extra base was of major importance. Speed and SB's made careers. We have been spoiled by the Homerun, few people appreciate the intricacies of the running game in baseball

Also, it's worth mentioning that Bonifacio's OBP is .800 for the season. Very good.

Yea, but he PROBABLY won't keep it up.

Just SPECULATING, though... :thumbup

If he does, he would be the greatest player of all time.

So, yea, I heard speed is overrated, and his OBP is the only thing that matters. But then I realized EB just made up for his purported statistical deficiencies in one F'ing game. All the guys with sabermetric fethishes can go plug that into their calculators. I mean... to say the guy does not belong in the majors... well, he definitely did today. Still has a long way to go, though.

See, this is how you fall into the trap of starting Michael Bourn the entire year and batting him lead off. You let your idealistic DESIRE cloud your judgement. OBP is so much more important than speed it's not even funny. Speed is nice, but it's not your bread and butter.

And I don't think anyone has a problem with him being on the MLB club, at least I'm not. He beat out Gaby fair and square. He earned 5 starts a week. I'm just disappointed they have him batting first with a less than ideal resume when he could do the same thing batting 7th or 8th. But let's see a 20 game sample size come up. If he has a higher OBP than Maybin, I'll be pretty surprised. But like 03 said, what a day for EB. If he is 1/4th that good going forward, I'm going to feel really comfortable with our future 2B and utility situation of Bonifacio/Coghlan, let alone getting adequate production out of 3B for right now.

And then people realized there were more efficient ways to run an offense. Hooray!

:notworthy thanks I was gonna check the records but I'll take your word for it. (lol maybe if it wuz OPS)

No one expects him to keep up 4 hits and 3 bags every game. I don't even expect him to get on base more than Maybin. But he has a pretty good head start on Golden Boy in that category right now. They will both surely move towards the mean, or however the stat hounds will describe it. But the fact is, EB played well today, and began to show people that he belongs in the lineup, even if not at the top.

Of course one game does not mean that we were wrong for being skeptical about his ability to get on base. In fact, many of us will continue to be exactly that, with fair reason. I just laugh at the idea that at some point people may have to go from hating the guy to actually, genuinely liking him. Seems like an unnecessary emotional step.

For the record, I don't hate Bonifacio and have said since he won the job that he should indeed have won the job. And hell, I'd love him to prove me wrong, but even Reggie Abercrombie's had a big game (though not this big).

It seems you're starting to sound a little bitter towards Maybin.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I mean, Golden Boy?

Nope, I'd say I like Maybin more than I like Bonifacio, because he is a more exciting prospect, with more talent and potential.

That being said, I like them both a lot. The only reason I call him Golden Boy is because it is only human to treat him as such. Sometimes, in this very forum, it is as if he were the second coming of JC. IMO they are both rookies, and have everything to prove. Today, EB proved more. I still think Maybin is better.

This migth not have anything to do with the game but thank you guys for Puting up my signature

NolasKo's while i was away:)

I will be returning to duties tomorow

Boni isn't a rookie.

Boni isn't a rookie.

Nice catch. I should have said prospect.

Serious question here:

At what point is someone no longer a prospect?

Maybin was one of the best prospects in the minor leagues last season. Is it really that unusual that the majority of people would be ecstatic about that?

There you go again, you are right on me, bro. Many would say you are no longer a prospect once you play for your MLB club. However, EB had never played for the Marlins before today, and that is his major league club. Maybin had, but only as a Sept call-up.

In my estimation, you are still a prospect when you are a virtual unknown at the major league level. EB and Maybin are in the process of losing that label.

Alone, in a vacuum, it makes perfect sense. In comparison to the terrible attitude towards Bonifacio, it is ironic. Especially considering Fredi's recent decisions and EB's first 5 at bats.

I'm not on you. Hey, I'd also argue that Boni is still a prospect, I was just wondering.

And sh*t, just because I say something like "Boni isn't a rookie" when you say he's a rookie doesn't mean I am on you.

Though, I don't agree with your definition of prosepect, especially since Bonifacio was already the starting 2B for the Nats and that there are tons of guys that are virtually unknown.

Come on, because of one game you can't compare the two. Maybin has been picked by just about every major source (EPSN, MLB.com, New York Times, etc) to win the ROTY. Bonifacio is just any baseball player(who is currently flying off the shelves in fantasy leagues, btw).

absolutely not. Maybin will have the better year, almost certainly. but they are both talented players, who can do good things for our team. why hate one and worship the other? why not just treat them both as what they are? hope for the future.

Bonifacio came in a crap trade where we traded away a starting caliber corner outfielder and a solid back of the rotation starter for basically nothing, not to mention that in his few appearances in the MLB, he was atrocious. Maybin was one of the most highly regarded prospects in the nation, and the centerpiece in a huge trade that involved one of the top hitters in the MLB. Do those sound like similar scenarios where the level of excitement would be equal?
