Starting to show signs of life. Hayes lost a lot of AB being with the MLB team, and the team lost Coghlan to the big club as well. But at least Brett was hitting in AAA. I'm hopeful he can become at least a .250/.300/.350 hitting catcher at the big league level, which coupled with his well above average defense, makes him a really nice backup. It's nice to see Raynor starting to figure out AAA a bit, but those strikeouts do not bode well. He isn't going to develop into a power bat like Maybin so pitcher's won't be afraid of pitching to him. Raynor is still nothing more than a bench outfielder in the future. Cam clearly needs some AAA. I'm not worried about him longterm, but I'd like to see him hit more line drives and homers, which he currently is not doing. A positive month for the guys in NOLA, but still need to pick it up some more.

I'm not a big fan of the rest of the bats here, so this is all you get. Petersen is doing his best Hermida impression. You have to love the BB rate and the average, but where the hell is the slugging? Cousins, what a nightmare. Ks are ballooning, no average. He's starting to turn into a non-factor. Hopefully these guys warm up in the summer. Very disappointing first two months from both of them. Cautiously optimistic with Petersen though.

 

JUPITER - A+

Nothing more can be said with Stanton. He's a top 5-10 overall prospect in baseball. The BB rate is rising, the K rate is declining (even if it's still high), he is abusing a+ pitching at a young age in a pitcher's league, and hitting for average. What an absolute animal. I'd expect a promotion to Jacksonville in August if he keeps this up. Dominguez, we always knew he was a glove that had a projectable bat, but this is really disappointing. A lot of guys struggle in Jupiter, but this is a bit much. This has to be the low. He needs a lot of work at pitch recognition apparently. But he's young, so no real worries yet. I'll be really worried this time next year if there is not significant improvement.

 

GREENSBORO - A

A lot of dudes (Bass, Lasater, Jacobs, Synan) are hitting well, but I don't believe in real prospects emerging in Greensboro. They are all worth a mention though. Skipworth is quickly turning into the worst pick of the draft. I hated it when they did it, and he's done nothing to convince me otherwise. 18 year old catchers should not be chosen with the 6th pick in the draft. However, here's a good story, Smolinski is back. We got him in the Olsen deal, and I consider him the primary piece (despite the awesomeness of Bonifacio). He hasn't played in 10 months or so, so rust is expected, but he's going to be an interesting one to track both offensively, and defensively. Best case scenario is he becomes a 2B/3B kind of player like Coghlan. Not sure what's up with Galloway, it's a wrist injury, but hopefully he is back soon and gets 2 full healthy months to end the year.

Dominguez in the last few games has started to perk up, with multi hit games the last two days and as he's hit in 7 of the last 10 games. His glove is phenomenal.

You don't know how pissed off I was when Parker Posey went just before we were able to draft. I was watching the draft and was praying to god Posey dropped to us, man was a beast hitter, great arm behind the plate, and had a cannon for an arm pitching.

 

I still feel Skipworth can turn it around, he's still really young, give him time.

What do you think of Ben Lasater in Greensboro and Ryan Curry/Greg Burns in Jupiter? (I ask because I saw them play for Jamestown when I went to a few games).

Skipworth is worrying me but he's young.

Aaron crow right? I thought he wanted a lot of money and that's why he didnt sign. You think we coulda signed him.

Hopefully Isaac Galloway returns soon for the purposes of my Adopt-A-Marlin!

Ben Lasater is 25 in Greensboro, so hes nothing to write home about. Greg Burns is young but has never really showed much(IMO).

Why does it seem like the same story every year with Marlins prospects? We get all of these tools guys who never ever seem to actually develop into anything. I'm not opposed to tools guys but it just seems like other organizations have a lot better luck with them. At least Stanton is doing amazing and broke the Jupiter curse, but just once I'd like to see some of our fringe guys like Cousins and Raynor actually pan out. I can't remember the last guy we've had like that who has actually contributed at the top level. I guess Carroll kind of counts but he'll never even get a chance to learn how to hit in the majors so he's a lost cause as well.

He's a long way away yet. The problem with our prospects is that they have the tools that make people excited if they ever put it together, and then they seem to for just one season and everyone thinks they are for real. But just like Cousins and Raynor, they come crashing down once again at the upper levels.

Its because they move from a launching pad in Greensboro to an extreme hitters environment in the FSL. In a perfect world, our A ball team would be in the Midwest League and A+ in the Carolina League.

 

Really wouldn't hurt to get an affiliation with a team in the Appalachian League or Pioneer League either as moving strait to the NY-Penn League from the GCL can be quite a shock(I dont really care for the way our minor league affiliates are set up).
