Posted July 31, 200915 yr Trade Volstad and Maybin and whoever they want in the minors.. figure the rest out later. Get him for next year and resign him the year before the ballpark opens. Now you have the best pitcher and offensive player in baseball to market your new stadium. I'm telling you... why not? Johnson, Nolasco, Halladay.. goodness. We have the MLB ready talent they want and we are in shouting distance from the playoffs... Man that would be huge. Its not like its a half year rental.. we get him next year. Worst case scenario we trade him next year at the deadline. IMO we contend with anyone with that staff and hanley. No brainer. Roll the dice baby
July 31, 200915 yr If you listened to Samson, they asked for "two left arms, a leg, and a left cerabellum" aka, they asked for Stanton, Morrison, Maybin, and possibly a Miller/West or another prospect. To get Halladay, we deplete our farm system, and we basically if any of our guys leave in free agency/other ways (Hermida, Ross, Uggla, Cantu, etc...) then we have nobody in our system to replace them, and we are left with a minor league team playing at the major league level. But hey, who cares if our team averages 0.5 runs per game the entire season, we have ROY HALLADAY!
July 31, 200915 yr Along with Volstad and Maybin they'd probably want either Stanton or Morrison who we said are untouchables which leaves Miller/West and a lower level prospect.
July 31, 200915 yr Doesn't matter how well your pitchers pitch, you can't win any games without scoring runs.

I wouldn't do it, but I'd like to add that if there's one guy you do this for...it's a guy like Roy Halladay. Halladay would dominate the National League...not to mention, we already have an ace in Josh Johnson, and a guy who pitched like an ace last year (and has pitched a lot better since his return from the minors) in Nolasco...+ Volstad who makes a rock solid 4th starter. It's fun to think about, I guess.
July 31, 200915 yr Isn't the saying good pitching beats good hitting? Anyway it would kill our farm system. If we were a big market team we could do it and go sign a bunch of international kids but were not.
July 31, 200915 yr Doesn't matter how well your pitchers pitch, you can't win any games without scoring runs. Works both ways.
July 31, 200915 yr Doesn't matter how well your pitchers pitch, you can't win any games without scoring runs. Works both ways. True. But our pitching hasn't been as bad as our hitting.
July 31, 200915 yr Author You are thinking too much. That would leave us with the best rotation in baseball You go add a nick johnson as well... goodness. Worry about next year next year. We have our all world stud to build around. Other players come and go when you have a player like him. ask st louis

Depleting our farm system isn't a good thing, but strictly talking for this year...getting an ace like Roy Halladay is always a huge upgrade. Despite how inconsistent our hitting is...there's a reason we have a great winning % when our ace takes the mound. Imagine having another one of those...Roy Halladay being even better.
