August 1, 200917 yr For all the hate the likes Bonifacio and Hermida get, it surprises me no one seems to care about Chris Coghlan's struggles. Coghlan went 0-4 with 2 K's tonight, and came into the night with a stat line that looked like this: .256/.342/.376 in 277 PA's. Even worse, he's .243/.291/.405 in July. He might be the only option left, but at this point, Chris Coghlan deserves some criticism...no? A .291 .OBP in 79 July PA's (even worse after his 0-4 night tonight) is pretty f***ing bad...especially when it's in the leadoff spot.
August 1, 200917 yr .342 OBP says it all. Sure, he's struggling. But, everyone goes through slumps. And why does everyone forget that he is a rookie?
August 1, 200917 yr I think people aren't noticing as much because he's still an upgrade over what we had. Bonifacio leading off was so abysmal, it is making Cogs look like Rickey Henderson. Coghlan, while he makes more outs than any of us would like, seems to have a clue as to what is going on. It got to a point that when Bonifacio went 0-4 with 4 groundouts, I considered it an improvement and a "good game" for him.
August 1, 200917 yr Author .342 OBP says it all. Sure, he's struggling. But, everyone goes through slumps. And why does everyone forget that he is a rookie? If I were to shrug the #'s off and say "well, he's a rookie," I'd look like a hypocrite.
August 1, 200917 yr Author wasnt he batting 300 from the leadoff spot a few weeks ago? Coming into the night... .272/.343/.380 as a leadoff guy this year.
August 1, 200917 yr So his OBP in the leadoff spot is .343 and his OBP on the season is .342. League average OBP for a starter is .332 and league average OBP for a leadoff hitter is .329. What are we complaining about again? A bad month?
August 1, 200917 yr He has been hitting the ball hard lately it seems. That's why I haven't got on him much plus he looks much better than Boni there. If I thought we had a better choice I'd be say something but we don't so what can we do. Maybe if Maybin comes up and does well then you consider him for the lead off spot I guess. This is only if his July carries over to August.

August 1, 200917 yr Oh, plus he had a .852 OPS in the last 10 games going into today. Not exactly time to start complaining.

If Hermida's #'s apparently aren't acceptable, why should Coghlan's be? Coghlan's current .OBP is nearing average, and his month overall, has been poor. He's still hitting 1st, and people seem fine with that. As I said in the original post..."for all the hate the likes of Bonifacio and Hermida get, why isn't Coghlan getting any, lately?" His #'s aren't exactly impressive, by any means.

August 1, 200917 yr No, the hate comes because it's Hermidas 4th year in the bigs. But Coghlan is just a rookie. Btw, I'm not hating on Hermida, just saying.

His #'s aren't exactly impressive, by any means. Easy, because this is Hermida's 4th full season and he's constantly making gaffs with his head in the clouds. Now, I've been one of the few to defend him but it's impossible to seriously not understand why he's so disliked and the rookie isn't. Coghlan isn't doing bad, and as I've pointed out, hasn't been doing bad lately (unless lately for you is the last few hours). I really don't get the point of this post.

Coghlan isn't doing bad, and as I've pointed out, hasn't been doing bad lately (unless lately for you is the last few hours). I really don't get the point of this post. His #'s are pretty much identical to Hermida's. As for "lately," no it's not just tonight. He had a poor July. A month leading off where he did not post a .300 .OBP. That's something that people complain about when Bonifacio does it. I don't dislike Coghlan, I just find it odd how little criticism he's gotten. Much like Lindstrom, he gets a lot of excuses in his favor. So what if he's a rookie and Hermida's in his 4th year? At the end of the day...he's just a year younger. So what if he's "a rookie?" You know who else is a rookie? The board whipping boy...Emilio Bonifacio(ut)...(same age too). At the end of the day, Coghlan is leading off...and his #'s suggest he's not exactly doing anything stellar to not deserve some sort of criticism (Hermida's outperforming him). PS - Hermida's "constantly making gaffs?" If by "constantly" you mean his stupid/lazy baserunning move the other night after the single...then yes. That only counts for 1, though.
August 1, 200917 yr He's a year younger, but it's his 4th year in the league. He had more chaces to show what he can do. Also, Hermida was supposed to be a much better player compared to how he is now. CC, on the other hand, is performing how we all expected him to. High OBP guy, that walks, but has little power. And his numbers show that he does not deserve criticism. He had a bad month, big deal. He still has a .340 OBP. That is above league average.
August 1, 200917 yr I expect hermis to slug and drive in runs when given the chance and he's doesn't do that. As for hermi only being a year younger than cogs I don't really look at that. Hermi has been in the bigs for 4 years and hasn't been improving much while coghlan has been in the bigs a few months and has been doing well with the exception of this month and early on when he first came up.

Constantly over the last 4 years sir. You can't say that's not true. Whether it's baserunning, "clutch" hitting, or dumb fielding, this has been something with him for a long time that hasn't disappeared yet. And yes I understand he had a bad month, but he's been better over the last two weeks with his .852 OPS. Also, are you saying there should be no difference between how you judge a 25-year-old corner outfielder with 485 career games and a 24-year-old middle infielder with 68 career games? Come on, that's just silly. Really, in the end all I'm saying is that you're about two weeks too late to start being judgmental. P.S., no matter how many times it's repeated, Emilio Bonifacio is not a rookie. Yes, he's a young player, but he's no rookie.
August 1, 200917 yr Also, Erick, it doesn't help your argument that his bad month is basically comprised of a horrifically bad 2 weeks. In the first 15 days of the month he hit .156/.229/.188 and in the second half he hit .310/.341/.571.

So it's Hermida's fault that he had the talent to mash AA as a 21 year old? All that proves is that Hermida was once a big time prospect. At the end of the day, Chris Coghlan is just a year younger than Jeremy Hermida. It's not Hermida's fault that he was able to reach the big leagues sooner, or that the Marlins promoted him sooner. The difference is a year in age. This reminds me of when I said in the offseason that if Lindstrom was going to be a dominant reliever, he'd better start proving it b/c he's already 29. The excuse I got was "well, he doesn't have the experience of a 29 year old...he took 2 years off for religious purposes!" Who cares? That doesn't make the player any younger/older...that doesn't add years to a player's career. It is what it is.
