November 11, 200322 yr Author The point of this is not who is the better pitcher, but about how Webb's comments were uncalled for. I don't care if Webb was the better pitcher statistic wise, he still had no right to make comments like that insulting Willis. If he were to insult anybody, it needed to be the voters without directing insult toward Willis which he obviously did. I don't even care if Webb had better stats, it's not like Willis's were soooo much worse. Plus, Willis had more wins and IMO Wins/Loses do count, not for everything but obviously you can't win without a decent pitching performance behind it. If I had to choose between Willis or Webb, I would still pick Willis because of the contribution he brought to the team. And as I emphasize over and over again that ROTY is not just about stats, and that's all Webb has to show for.
November 11, 200322 yr i really dont think he insulted Dontrelle.... he said he had a sucky 2nd half..... pretty much factual eh? and Webb kept the DBacks in the race when Schilling and Johnson went down with injuries.....
November 11, 200322 yr it's not too often that i hear a major league baseball player disparage another player's performance after he wins an award. factual or not, it's pretty clear that brandon's grapes were awfully sour. From the Arizona Republic (ha): Caught in a Webb Brandon Webb's lack of run support paled in comparison to the fact he was ignored by seven voters who left him off National League Rookie of the Year ballots. Webb finished fourth in the NL with a 2.84 ERA and led all rookies with 172 strikeouts, yet finished a distant third in the voting. Webb (10-9) sensed that voters might have been swayed by the nine first-half wins by Florida's Dontrelle Willis (14-6), who notched 17 first-place votes en route to 118 points to easily outdistance Milwaukee outfielder Scott Podsednik (81) and Webb (73). "It had to have been that (wins), or they already made up by their minds by the All-Star break. That had to be what it was," the mild-mannered Webb said in a conference call. "(Willis') second half was anywhere but good. He didn't do anything in the second half." The seven voters who left Webb off their ballots (which award five points for first place, three for second and one for third) were Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Daily News, Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune, Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle, Bill Shannon of the Sports Press Service in New York, Frank Clines of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Paul Meyer of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Bob Broeg of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I thought it would be me or Podsednik, and I thought Willis would be last," Webb said. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/s...gmnote1111.html
November 11, 200322 yr crybaby Leave the baby to himself...the fact of the matter is Willis won, Willlis has a ring, Marlins rule, DBacks suck. Period.
November 11, 200322 yr I disagree. Although his hitting stats are way better than Webb's, they are still not good enough to say that those stast are the reason why he won four more games. ....and it looks like we have a winner for the NO SH*T, EINSTEIN award
November 11, 200322 yr The reason why Dontrelle won 4 more games is because of his team's ability to score. Put Brandon Webb on the Marlins and you WOULD NOT have the B-Train or sellouts but instead a superstar. His numbers are very similar to Beckett's this year.
November 11, 200322 yr Webb is right on, but he should have kept it to himself. Although I would have picked Podsednick over both of them.

November 11, 200322 yr the three most important stats for pitcher are WHIP, ERA, and BAA. For Webb, it was 1.15, 2.84, and .212. For Willis, it was 1.28, 3.30, and 2.45. Willis won because of one thing: hype

November 11, 200322 yr Hype that saved our season It is so funny when people such as myself say: Wow Dontrelle is the greatest, he got crowds to come to games. We only averaged 16 f***ing thousand people per game. The world series champs. W/o that ESPN the Magazine and s*** like that Dontrelle probably wouldn't be ROY. Podsednik had a crazy a** year, especially for a rookie. And Dontrelle helped himself out with his bat, but not to an extreme where you can say he won 14 games and Webb won 10 because Dontrelle hit better.

Something Webb cannot do. if pitcher's bats mattered, then Hampton would have won a Cy Young If your opinion mattered a Giant would win everything And for the record, I can't hold it against Webb for speaking his mind. I don't agree with him, but he can talk all he wants. Looking like an a-hole is the risk you take. But I prefer when athletes speak their mind as opposed to not speaking to the media at all (Barry) or dropping a cliche every which way (everyone else). But of course, no one in the media will jump on Webb because he didn't go to the University of Miami.
November 11, 200322 yr Well is Dontrelle real famous and popular because he got like 8 hits this year? No. Its the smile, the windup, and the domination. And in the 2nd half of the year it was usually the smile and the windup. But I want to punch Brandon Webb. He says Dontrelle did nothing --- nothing but pitch in a playoff race(at the top of the race). It wasn't like he was getting rocked every night. His win loss record % was almost as good in the 2nd half as Webb's was for the season!

November 11, 200322 yr For all of you people trying to be the Anti-Homer and voice of reason among the "less informed", saying Webb had a better year can just stop. You are entitled to your opinion for sure, but come on. Any one player and especially a rookie that can spark fan interest and give momentum to his team the way Willis did, deserves an MVP if you ask me. Screw the numbers! They are not that different. If Webb did that for his team or Podsednik for his, they would deserve it just the same. But the fact is they didn't. Neither one, especially Webb did nothing spectacular.... Prove me wrong.
