August 28, 200916 yr During my time here, I've tried to be thoughtful, analytical, and provide generally intelligent posts that contribute constructively to this forum. This isn't going to be one of those posts. In fact its going to be about the farthest thing from, as I'm not feeling the least little bit of desire to be intelligent or analytical right now. I'm feeling something instinctual, something that is emanating from within that is 100 percent emotional. And this is it- VOLSTAD BLOWS. That's right, I'm saying that Chris Volstad blows. Every time that I have counted on this guy this year to come out and have a quality start and help this team win, he goes out and just gets shelled and looks incompetent. What the crap! It's not that he's the only player who has played or is playing bad, it's very far from it. It's just that when this guy gets on the mound and has games like this, he becomes the focal point of my frustrations for enduing a team that seems just good enough to get your hopes up, and then completely shatters them because they are a team of choke jobs that fold down the stretch. But darnit Volstad, you should be better than this! And darnit Marlins, you could be better than this! Stop giving away talent through bad trades and generally bad moves when we all know that you can't replace any of it through free agency. Yet every year, all of the baseball world is going to tell me what a great job the Marlins do to get to 80 wins with their payroll at the end of the year. Well darnit, when are they going to try and put together a 90 win team and not just patch whatever you can together. Ok, I think the rant may be over. But I must re-iterate- Volstad blows, and he is the focal point right now for why this team can be so darn disappointing! I can't wait for football season to start.
August 29, 200916 yr our entire starting rotation, minus JJ, has been absolute garbage. what was supposed to be our strength this year, has turned into a huge weakness and has been a huge disappointment
August 29, 200916 yr I'll wait till next year to say whether he does or not. B/c his statistics this year don't match up at all with his minor league career/last year. So I think this season's been more a fluke than anything else for him. Also, he's already almost at his career high for innings pitched in a season. Maybe he's wearing down a bit? I don't know. All I know is, Volstad's never been the type to give up HR's/XBH's, in general, and this year that has not been the case.

Being rational, Volstad had a 5.9 HR/FB% during his minor league career, and a 3 HR/FB% last year in the majors. This year, he has a 12.5 HR/FB%. He isn't pitching like he normally does this year.

Maybe you should watch that instead, since you seem more excited for football season, as you stated in your original post.
August 29, 200916 yr Low payroll or not, this team needs to go out and get some reliable starting pitching in the offseason... Other than JJ, the rotation has not been reliable... Volstad seems like he was replaced by pod people this year, Nolasco started off like crap, came back from the minors, had a very nice stretch and then went back to crap again, Andrew Miller was a dud, Anibal is not the same as he was in '06, Sean West has been OK (although I think he was rushed up)...I'm not asking for high $$$/lights out starters, just get some experienced guys who have decent stuff and know how to pitch and eat up innings

We had a team ERA of 4.34 before the break, 4.30 since. EDIT: Starters had a 4.57 ERA before the break, 4.76 since.

This is from ESPN, and ESPN only gives overall pitching #'s for pre/post All-Star Break. I think.

If Sanchez doesn't pitch well (I would say Volstad too, but he was just sent down), it's not going to matter whether or not we get a SP on waivers. That simple. We can get an experienced middle of the rotation type guy, but if Sanchez and the rest of the guys continue to be inconsistent, it really won't matter. Not to mention that Ricky Nolasco has been far from consistent this year, as well.

You aren't going to get that this year or most likely next year. Most likely scenario is you see guys like Volstad, Sanchez and West in the rotation next year. If the Marlins decide one of those three will not help the team next year, it is a POSSIBILITY the Marlins go after a guy like Justin Duchstcherer or see them take a chance on a guy like Randy Wolf. Obviously the most interesting pitcher next free agency is Marquis, but don't expect the Marlins to be a part of discussions. A guy like Duchstcherer is interesting because he is coming off an injury, that would allow the Marlins to get him for relatively cheap, still he could end up being as risky as Anibal, but if he can regain form we have seen in the past that he can be all star caliber. Randy Wolf is have a very nice year, and he'll probably want somewhere around a 3-4 year deal now that he is at the age of 33. If the Marlins could somehow get him for a 1 year deal worth around $6 million, that would be a steal, but don't count on it. BTW: I said to forget Marquis because he is having a career year and is 31 atm, a tiny bit after his prime, and will probably look for and get a long term, big priced contract in free agency. Most likely, expect about the same rotation as this year this time next year.
