Someone the Fish should go For...

Orioles declined RHP Kerry Ligtenberg's $1.2 million option for 2004. Ligtenberg did a solid job as a setup man for the Orioles last season, posting a 3.34 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 59 1/3 innings. $1.2 million is about what he's worth, but the Orioles are going to attempt to sign a bigger name.

I remember we were thinking about him, well, atleast on the board, there were a lot of rumors about picking him up around midseason.

I still think he'd be a nice piece in our pen.

Hmm, another one's name pops up again.....

This is a guy a bunch were high on when the Jeff for Derek rumors were flying around. I would not mind seeing him here.

I remeber back when he was with the braves...

He has really live fastball. I say if we dont get Fox or Urbina we should go after Lightenberg. He can replace fox in the set up role. All i know is that we need serious bullpen help if Fox, Uggy and Helling leave.

Just wait til they non-tender Jason Johnson too.

Both of them have their shortcomings, and there's no tears being shed tonight because of this decision, but both guys would be a big help next year, especially if Phelps can't come back. Johnson sure makes Helling and Redman (even more) expendable. Kerry is someone you have to look at if you believe neither Phelps nor Almanza will be back.

I think you sign Lightenberg regardless of whether Almanza and Phelps come back. He is much better than both and can be a key player in the pen next year at a small price. Sign him and lets move on to bigger things.

Juanky, that's pretty my attitude too. Grab him if you can and move on. He'll fit in in some capacity.

With Fox and Kerry in the pen that would give us a good pen with either Loop or Uggy closing, and remember that we also have Bump.

BTW: I dont think the marlins will bring Almanza back. Not with the season he had, and his arm troubles.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. :p

If Beinfest re-signed Almanza, Loria might as well go ahead and name Willis#1 GM.

Ligtenberg would be a great pickup for this team. I'd move him right to the top of potential bullpen additions.

You people do understand that...

a) Ligtenberg couldn't get a lefty out with a shotgun and

b) he's righty, not a lefty. When I said Phelps and Almanza I was referring to their injuries not their throwing arm.

Kerry is an experienced major league pitcher, he has his flaws and he's very much a situational pitcher. Don't expect more from him than he's capable of delivering.

I still like him.

This is an excellent idea. I like Lightenberg, got a strong arm and can come out of the pen with some heat. Made $1MM last year. Here are his stats:

3.34 47K 14BB in 59.1IP - .263BAA and 9HRs.

Pretty good K/BB ratio, solid ERA, especially in hitter friendly AL. His BAA is a little high as are his home runs, but that could be reduced pitching at JRS. Would be a very good addition, and cheap. Lets do it...

We still need a lefty...

Johnson would be a steal. I say get all the young arms we can - always have value for trades.
