Wow. That is a great bunch.

Wow. That was not what you asked. You asked if we were trying to get players making more than the minimum because you've accused the team of being cheap again, this offseason.

Like who? And are they offering more than the minimum.

Kevin Gregg, Kiko Calero.

Once again, your original statement has been proven wrong, so you're just bringing up something else now.

Btw, you brought up the Phillies bringing in Halladay, yet ignored the fact that they got of rid of Lee.

Roy Halladay is way better than Cliff Lee.

WAY better? No, not really.

Gabe Gross was one before he signed with the A's earlier, Darin Erstad is still a FA along with Brian Giles and Garret Anderson who has had trouble finding a team so most likely he won't be a starter next season.

Halladay 148-76, 3.43 ERA and 1.20 WHIP

Lee 90-52, 3.97 ERA and 1.30 WHIP

Halladay is going to win the Cy Young in the National League this season, book it. I think Lee is a solid pitcher but Halladay is a elite pitcher. Get rid of the DH and his ERA is going to be in the low 2.00's in 2010. Watch out, he could win 25 games for the Phillies and the line-up they will have behind him.

Backin's only method of debate is to continuously shift the bounds of the debate until people give up. It's like a f***ing scorched earth policy. "what? You disproved that? I'm not even talking about that anymore! What about this?"

That's great. I still wouldn't classify that as "way better." Cliff Lee has proven to be a Cy Young candidate on any given year, too. Not to mention they also traded some of their top prospects.

I really hope we take advantage of the buyer's FA market and get another outfielder for the bench. There are plenty of vets that are still out there for cheap.

so we cant be disappointed with the offseason because they increased payroll? im disappointed because they always give us a handjob but always quit before i finish. last year with johnson but passing on so many other options for the rotation and the pen. look i think were headed in the right direction to get on an even foot with everyone else... but its still disappointing to leave holes when there are cheap options out there. also the tone of these debates is embarrassing to read

Don't forget that the Phillies got some of the Mariners top prospects in this deal too. They did not give Lee away.

I agree with you and if they don't limit it to lefty swinging outfielders then they have a lot more to choose from.

I agree with you about everything you have written above. I would like to keep conversations about the Marlins but when you get attacked you have to respond, plain and simple.

Wow. That is a great bunch.

So you'll crap on those guys and then tout Geoff Jenkins as a potential option?

The Marlins aren't in a position where you can just add 2 mil in payroll and say "You're significantly better".

Is Logan Morrison really a worse option than Geoff Jenkins at this point? You spend the money to get better. Carlos Delgado would probably be an improvement. Geoff Jenkins is just adding payroll to add payroll.

If anything, the Turnbow/Gregg kinds of moves are better because they add depth and have a higher ceiling for lower costs.

Jenkins didn't play last season. He is a 400K kind of player and that is it. Now if the Marlins signed Russell Branyan or Hank Blalock I think it would make them significantly better for 2010. Delgado is kind of iffy as it seems like his hip is still bothering him.

Again, you crap on low risk, high reward guys like Turnbow or Kevin Gregg and complain about the Marlins "sitting on their wallets", but you think Geoff Jenkins is a good pickup?

I really don't see how you are complaining about this team increasing payroll. So if they had traded Uggla and Nolasco and added guys for the same price you'd be happy? Are you upset about how they increased payroll, or just that they haven't increased payroll to a point you want? They are different.

If they got rid of Nolasco and Uggla they would have been doing that as part of another fire sale. I really doubt that they would have spent the money those two guys are making this season on players. Excuse me if I don't feel totally confident in a 26-year old rookie playing 1B and a Rule 5 guy being depended on to help off the bench. Would Jenkins he a improvement over Jimenez? I would think so.

I'm not saying that the Marlins have to increase the payroll a ton. Just a little bit to bring in a couple of cheap veterans where they need help.

Jenkins did not play in 2009. He put up a .728 OPS against RHP in 2008. So his last decent season was 2007. At least Jimenez, Gaby and Logan have potential to develop.

I don't necessarily have a problem going for Jenkins. I like minimum salary guys with upside. He is this.

My point is that you are completely inconsistent on this, and you refuse to respond to that. Why is going after Kevin Gregg, Derrick Turnbow, Jose Veras, Rick Ankiel, or Frank Catalanotto worthy of a sarcastic "Wow, that's a great bunch", but you give Jenkins thoughtful consideration?

And that's what they are trying to do. This is so dumb.

You only do that if you know the veterans will be better than your in house options.

Again, you criticized them for going after veterans making the minimum. So it only matters if they are making more than 400k and aren't Geoff Jenkins?

First of all the Marlins had no real chance to get Ankiel who wanted $3 million bucks and a starting job. Who were the Marlins going to bump out of the outfield? He was terrible last season for the Cardinals earning himself a spot on the pine. In fact, I like all of the guys you mentioned except Turnbow. It's one thing to talk to players and quite another to really try to sign them.

Personally, I don't think the Marlins have any excuse in not signing a starting 1B or 3B on a 1-year deal. I admit I don't get too excited about bringing in minimum type players.

Johnson was under contract for 2010 already. If you think it's like the Phillies who added the best pitcher around in Roy Halladay then I guess you are right. What new players have the Marlins brought in on a major league contract who will make a impact in 2010? No one. Like I said before I do like the signing of Johnson as it sends the right message to both the fans and the rest of the players on the Marlins. But, it is not enough to beat the Phillies.

Not quite. He was club-controlled, but there was no guaranteed contract. The Marlins did have the "option" of not tendering him a contract.

And what were the chances of that happening? 0.0
