Stanton in mix to make roster

Featured Replies

Haha. In 1961, yes that 1961, Gentile would finish third in the AL MVP voting, as well as third in OPS that season. Second in AL MVP voting was Mickey Mantle, who also finished second in OPS. First in MVP voting was Roger Maris, who'd finish 5th in OPS. Fourth in MVP voting was Norm Cash, who'd finish 1st in OPS.

Cash and Gentile picked bad years to have career seasons.

I think most likely he ends up being Russell Branyan than anyone else (low-800 OPS), but still incredibly valuable because of his defense.

Problem with Stanton in comparision to Montero and Heyward (them making the tri-fecta of top 3 bats)...Stanton has most SLG but worst OBP, Heyward has amazing OBP but worst slg (likely won't be a power [.200+ ISO] hitter), Montero is not as good in SLG at Stanton and not as good in OBP as Hewyard but is plus in both. Montero has the best bat, he just doesn't have the defense. Heyward has the best defense but probably the worst bat. And Stanton is middle of both.

Anyway, the thing is, Stanton has the highest ceiling and the highest floor. The problem is, he is a lot closer to his floor right now than the other two. If Stanton gets his ceiling, he's HOFer. And that's what people are hyped up about. But he has a loooong way to get to that point, and more than likely he's another good power hitter that'll get some ASG.

QUOTABLE

``If he wasn't, he sure has changed my mind. Whether he breaks south with us, that's not determined. . . . We may get a call from the league president saying get this guy out of here before he kills somebody.''

-- Gonzalez on how close outfielder Michael Stanton is to the majors.

Just some more Stanton talk. Kinda find it odd since Stanton hasn't played in a few days.

I've got a bad feeling about the Cantu, Uggla and Ross production early this season. I would feel better if the Marlins had moved Uggla, allowing Coghlan to move to second base and Stanton to start the season in the Florida outfield. The Marlins could hide Stanton in the seven spot in the order to start the season and see how he does over the first month. I think he can match the Uggla offensive production right now and he can only get better. It's also a rather glaring stat that Bonafacio hasn't even attempted a stolen base this spring. What good is speed?

Dan Uggla's a decent bet to walk 100 times this season. Mike Stanton wouldn't come close to matching him.
