Posted March 21, 201015 yr 4:47pm: The Twins have reached agreement with Mauer on an eight-year, $184MM deal, tweets Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune. The pact also includes a full no-trade clause, according to Christensen (via Twitter).
March 21, 201015 yr A lotta money, but he is so far ahead of any other catcher it is a good investment, providing he stays healthy.
March 21, 201015 yr Wow, 23 Million a year. Isn't that what MLB was trying to stop? It's crazy. Almost worth it though.
March 22, 201015 yr I mean, in my mind he is undoubtedly a top 3 position player moving forward (Pujols, Hanley, Mauer). Congrats to the Twins on their fans. He's an outstanding player with an outstanding persona in the community. Good for him and them.
March 22, 201015 yr Good for him and the team. Im glad someone other than the Yankees is handing out big deals to keep their star players.
March 22, 201015 yr I can do so many things with that kind of money. Lots of steak. Lots of liquor. Lots of women. And season tickets to the Marlins. What else do you need?

March 22, 201015 yr I can do so many things with that kind of money. I could do so many things with a fraction of that kind of money.
March 22, 201015 yr Anyone think he moves to another position before this contract is up? Hes already had some low back trouble. I don't know what Morneau's contract situation is but if he is there I think Mauer could play left. The dude was the best qb in the country his senior year in HS I believe.
March 22, 201015 yr He'll be going to cabo alot more now... Wellllll played mauer! Haha I love that commercial.
March 25, 201015 yr this is not good for us because arent the twins considered to be like us a small market team with a small payroll. i know they got the new stadium but when we get ours if we have a top player his agent my point this contract out,,on how a a small market team with a new stadium put out the money.. im not saying were going to have a player of mauers caliber but idk JS..

I should start this post with "Um, hi, let me introduce you to ..." but won't. But here's something I guess you weren't privy to. Hanley's 6Y/$70M extension is like Mauer's 2007 4Y/$33M. This is Mauer's second extension. Hanley is his point because we're going to be in this exact same situation before 2014 (before the 3rd year of the new ballpark). Also, I don't know why this would be "not good" for us, though your post was kinda confusing to read.

Mauer was going into his third year of arbitration, while Hanley was going into his first.
March 26, 201015 yr I'm just saying this: You said "im not saying were going to have a player of mauers caliber...." And I'm saying: We have one, and his name is Hanley Ramirez. I wasn't necessarily saying they will end up with similar contracts, although that may yet happen.
March 27, 201015 yr WCCO TV 4 (MSP) has a nightly segment called "Good Question". Thursday night the question was: "How much is left for Mauer?" Here's the written text: Good Question: How Much Money Is Left For Mauer? Joe Mauer's not the only guy who would love to stay in Minnesota for $23 million every year over eight years. But even multimillionaire athletes have to pay the taxman and their union dues and their agents. So how much will be left for Joe? "We're not feeling sorry for Joe, in fact, we're very happy he's here and staying here," said Rayla Allison, director of the Sports Business Institute at the University of Minnesota. Allison said she's negotiated contracts with professional athletes, and they, like all of us, only take home a portion of their pay. Agent Commission "At first, a certain amount goes to his agent," Allison said. She said sports agents typically get 3 to 5 percent of the total compensation package, per year. "The player contact is lower, and higher for other deals," she said. Endorsement deals, speaking engagements, sponsorship packages can get agents closer to 20 to 25 percent, according to sources. Lee Hutton, a Minneapolis attorney who represents several pro athletes, said, "Baseball endorses a free market system for its players in negotiating contracts with Club owners. Other sports do not." Football, for example, caps agent fees at 3 percent per the collective bargaining agreement. "The (baseball) agent fee is negotiated freely between the player and his agent," Hutton said. "The only stipulation is that the agent cannot charge a fee unless the player's salary negotiated exceeds the Major League minimum (currently $400,000)," he said. But because the money is so huge, let's assume that Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, is making a 3 percent commission. He would take $690,000 in fees, every year of Mauer's deal. Taxes "He's gonna pay more to the federal government and the state of Minnesota for taxation than what you or I will make in a lifetime," Allison said. Minnesota state law requires professional athletes pay income tax to the state when they are "on duty" here. So if the Chicago White Sox are playing in Minnesota, players pay taxes to Minnesota. If a Twins player is not a resident of Minnesota, they pay taxes to the state for when they're on duty. Mauer has a home in Florida, and would likely file taxes as a Florida resident because the state has no income tax there. "If a player with a $23 million salary is not a resident, about two-thirds of his duty days would be in Minnesota," said Lisa Waldrup, spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Revenue. "The duty days percentage will vary by player, depending on injuries, contract requirements for non-game appearances, etc. If his tax deductions equal 15 percent of his income and if two-thirds of his taxable income were allocated to Minnesota (based on the MN share of duty days), his tax liability would be close to $1 million," she said. So it's likely that Mauer will write a check of around $1 million to Minnesota, dropping his take-home pay to $21.3 million. But, when he plays in other states, for the other one-third of his duty days, he has to pay state income taxes to the states with income taxes. So figure that might be another $300,000 a year, dropping his take home to $21 million. Poor guy. Federal Taxes The top income tax bracket is 35 percent. Assume 15 percent deductions for Mauer's overall income for property taxes paid, charitable donations, mortgage interest and he still would owe nearly $7 million in federal taxes. That drops Mauer's take-home pay to $14 million. Union Dues Major league baseball players are required to join the players union, but it's a steal. If he had to pay 4 percent, he would pay $920,000. Instead, the players union charges $50 per day during the season. That totals about $9,150 for every player, regardless of income level. So despite the fact that Mauer won't be taking home $23 million a year, "he's doing alright. he's doing tremendous," Allison said. (© MMX, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.)
