Gaby or Morrison

Featured Replies

Jesus H Christ moving Gaby to LF is the worst idea I have ever heard on this board. [/b]If anything, you see if he can play passable at 3B, which would really really help next year if they get rid of Uggla and Coghlan has to play 2B, but LF? That is 100% idiotic. He has no chance of lasting there, unlike Logan who might actually suit out there like a Conor Jackson. Just mind boggling stupidity. Let's put Coghlan in CF to make room for Morrison when we trade Cody? facepalm

Jesus H. Christ, that's the worst idea I have ever heard on this board. Gaby lost that 3B job in college because he wasn't very good at it. Shuffling things around in games that don't matter in an attempt to better a very poor defense is the way to go. And using that Cogs sample as an example? Just mind boggling stupidity.

Keep throwing those stats up there. And when someone else uses stats to show things about a player that is not agreed with, tell everyone how defensive stats really don't mean all that much.

"Gaby is more than acceptable at 1B. It's the rest of the team that sucks so bad to have us next to last in defense." Sorry, not buying into it. I'm not satisfied being an also-ran for the play offs. I'm for improvement. Wherever and however that is.

Both. You trade Jorge, move CC back to his native position of 3B, and put Logan in LF.

I would like to see if Gaby could play LF before doing that. Logan has the far better glove at 1B and I would hate to see that go to waste. Defensively speaking 1B is a pretty important position. Just ask the rest of the IFers.

If this were the case (Gaby could play LF), wouldn't we have Gaby at LF, Cantu at 1B and CC at 3B?

My guess is Logan would play LF, Cogs at 3B and either Cantu or Uggs at 2B.

Because Gaby won the 1B job and has never played LF before.

And it very well could be Logan to LF if the team feels Gaby couldn't handle the position. I have no idea if he can or not. It's just an idea I would like to see experimented with in the off season and/or ST next year. I prefer to better our defense next season instead of spinning our wheels and being near the bottom of the ML list in it, and Logan is an upgrade (I consider a big upgrade) at 1B, while at the same time keeping Gaby's bat in the line up. Much like The U did moving him from 3B to 1B.

Actually UM moved him from 3B to C, we did the moving to 1B after moving him back to 3B.

Regardless, Gaby is a good defensive 1B, plus Logan is the more athletic player with the better arm, so it makes too much sense to put Logan in LF. If you want to improve out defense next year, that's what you do.

"Gaby is more than acceptable at 1B. It's the rest of the team that sucks so bad to have us next to last in defense." Sorry, not buying into it.

Wait a minute.

Even using the very rough and highly inexact criteria of "errors," we have, season-to-date:

7 Sanchez

9 Uggla

11 Cantu

12 Ramirez

Which works out to fielding %s of:

.989 Sanchez

.978 Uggla

.957 Cantu

.963 Ramirez

Ignoring all of the other supposedly (and undoubtably) better defensive stats, relatively, the rest of the infield DOES, in fact, suck, and that's half a year's sample. There may be no Golden Gloves in the bunch, but Sanchez is the best of them, by a fair margin.

Would he be better at 3B? Not likely. Would he be better in LF? Not likely.

Leave him at 1B. Shuffle Morrison and Coghlan and whoever around depending on who else is traded. Trade Sanchez only if/when everyone else pans out and he becomes extraneous, otherwise (perhaps more likely) he becomes a decent-fielding, hitting-machine fixture worth signing long-term.

Hard to be down on a rookie who sports the best BA on the team and is OPSing just shy of Uggla and Ramirez.

Logan has the far better glove at 1B

In 47 games in NOLA at 1B, Morrison has a fielding % of .990. Indistinguishable from Sanchez at .989 in 81 games. Maybe Morrison is underperforming, I don't know.

Seems to me that Sanchez is doing just fine, both at the plate and in the field at 1B. He's working on pulling off a rookie-season like Coghlan's. Remains to be seen what happens over the remaining games. But, what more could we ask?

Keep throwing those stats up there. And when someone else uses stats to show things about a player that is not agreed with, tell everyone how defensive stats really don't mean all that much.

"Gaby is more than acceptable at 1B. It's the rest of the team that sucks so bad to have us next to last in defense." Sorry, not buying into it. I'm not satisfied being an also-ran for the play offs. I'm for improvement. Wherever and however that is.

I don't tell anyone defensive stats aren't irrelevant, so maybe you have me confused with an idiot who routinely spouts off sheer crap in all directions. Kind of like most of your posts. You think any of us are satisfied being also rans for the playoffs? There is a way to improve this, and there is a way not to improve this. Putting Gaby Sanchez, at all, into LF is a way NOT to improve this.

Ross (RF) 12.4

Stanton 11.1

Gaby 4.6

Uggla 1.7

Maybin .6

Coghlan -8.8

Hanley -12.5

Cantu -15.1

Ross (CF) -21

I can firmly say, it's the rest of the team that sucks defensively and NOT Gaby. It's probably a sample size issue where Ross is so low in CF, and Hanley is having a down year after two excellent defensive years, but Uggla is doing better than normal (-9.6 2009) so that kind of cancels out... but the order of importance is:

1 - Cantu is absolutely terrible at 3B. Only McGhee is worse in the league among starters

2 - Coghlan is terrible in LF, which is not surprising because he is an infielder

3 - Uggla is a below average fielder historically, despite having a good year. I expect that to drop to reach his career average

4 - The Catchers and Pitchers cannot throw out and hold runners respectively, which is not reflected in UZR

5 - Ross is under performing, could be a sample size issue since he has switched positions and is normally very good

6 - Hanley is under performing. Personally, I think he gets bored when we're not winning that explains this season (which isn't bad, but not monstrous). Regardless, it's not like you can replace Hanley like any of the players above so I deem this "issue" of low priority for the team.

Gaby doesn't even make the list. Gaby is not a problem and not the one to move here. I'm not saying you won't be 100% right and Logan takes over the position in 2-3 years if he proves to be the better bat and Gaby's "weakness" in an .800 OPS at 1B starts hurting the club (or, his defense does regress and this is merely a 1/2 season sample size variation) versus superior options, but right now? 100% idiotic. He is hitting well, he is fielding well, and until he proves June was a fluke and he can't maintain solid numbers, there is no reason to move him. We need to develop him, not create chaos.

Like I said, Morrison is more progressed in LF than Coghlan was when they switched over, and that's according to Edwin who has coached them both in the minors a lot. Putting Gaby in LF is crazy. If anything, you move him to 3B, where he has played considerably, and see if you can maybe sneak him there a season or two until Dominguez is ready. That would be ideal. LF hurts Gaby and hurts the club more than it helps Morrison. He's playing LF in AAA. He's going to be our left fielder until Gaby blows up. That's the smart thing to do.

Except that you're missing one important factor. Scoring rules dictate that if a first baseman cannot handle anything but a perfect throw from an infielder, regardless of whether 90% of the other first basemen at the major league level could have made the play or not, the error is charged to the infielder not to the first baseman, so by definition Sanchez' fielding percentage is "protected" and thus meaningless. You can't even compare him to other first baseman because in the same way, their numbers are affected by those playing in the infield with them.

You won't find one negative comment on this site about Sanchez from me, I'm no hater. I love the guy as a Miami native made good, a guy who has brought the ultimate joy to his parents who can sit in the stands every night and watch their collective lifelong dreams come true, to the accolades he's rightfully receiving and consideration for ROY deserved, and I also embrace the level of play he's exhibiting and the contributions he's making to this team. In short he's been great!

But that said, I know Jeremy Hermida's pedestal is probably in storage somewhere covered in cobwebs and gathering dust but it's not quite time to drag it out and spruce it up for Gaby because there are still holes in his game, especially his defensive game and while I see him continuing to work hard to improve, he has a long way to go. But again, he's making himself into a cornerstone of the next generation of Marlins' teams.

I've never liked the argument that others have to be portrayed as inferior in order to make a usually faulty argument that the player being lionized is superior. Stats are so so notoriously corrupted by the lack of existence of factors they purposely leave out and the faulty thought rationalizations behind their formula construction, that's why those etched in stone just a few years ago as definitive are so often now considered feeble failures those obsessed with these things would like to forget ever existed because they proved to be so embarrassing. Stats have their place, one of them is not on the field.

It's like trying to build an argument on the notion that Chris Coghlan is a terrible left fielder which is pure, to quote Hanley Ramirez, horsesh*t. You want to say that when he came into the league he was a terrible LFer, there's no argument there. If you want to say his entire 2009 season out there was sub-par no one with an objective point of view is going to argue the point, but to use stats from a period when his learning curve was nearly on flat line to weigh down the substantially improved work he is doing in LF in July 2010, it's corrupt and unfair and just plain paints an inaccurate picture of how far he's come and the improvements he's shown, month by month this season.

Chris Coghlan could play left field for the rest of his career for this or many other teams and I doubt you'd find an objective scout or general manager who would be disappointed he was out there for that team. And there is no definitive correlation between an infielder being moved to the outfield (or vice versa) undermining or affecting his play out there, these are individual, player by player determinations that can't all be painted by the same broad brush. Brett Carroll, often considered one of the best and unselfish overall defensive outfielders in the Marlins system, and certainly the guy with the strongest, most accurate arm, started out as a third baseman who also played some 2nd base along the way, yet made the conversion. But this isn't about Brett Carroll nor should the argument be deflected by his inclusion here, the point is throughout baseball, if you want to go back and go through the hundred or so outfielders playing at the major league level at any given time, I would guess a large percentage of them began their professional careers or played much of their college days at a position other than where they wound up.

It isn't be accident that Sanchez has routinely been replaced at first late in games even as his hitting prowess became evident. He's a rookie major leaguer getting better every day at his craft but he is not at this point the best first baseman on the team in the minds of those professional talent evaluators in the dugout or in the front office, so accept it. Maybe, and I have no doubt he will become a fine first baseman, as good as 95% of the guys in the game, but he isn't there yet and to complain about others ringing up errors at least partially of his doing doesn't further the debate or make it true now.

I'm just damn happy he's on the team and playing at a level few (if they are being honest with themselves) ever expected. Personally I see a guy getting better everyday just like the other guy in this equation, Chris Coghlan who continues to improve defensively, as much because of their commitments to excellence as their drive to be winners and the best teammates they can be. I look at these two guys and see the future of the Marlins and it brings great comfort they are there. We're pretty lucky to have both of them.

Care to give examples? Statisticians are constantly qualifying their statistics. The guys on Fangraphs never quit analyzing and criticizing the merits of their in-house WAR. Sorry, but I find those assertions to be baloney.

What you said may be 100% true, but Coghlan was an IF so late in the game and moved to LF so there was space for his bat. He may end up fine in LF, but I have to think he's better off at 2B, mainly because I have to trust the assessment of the Marlins (Minor League) staff over my own.

One point about CC's fielding splits: He has a positive UZR on the road but is getting crushed at home. I'm not UZR expert, but I wonder if he's being unfairly "penalized" because of how difficult it is to play LF in Dolphins Stadium?

TOMMY SAID THIS WAS TO KEEP CANTU'S BAT IN THE LINEUP.

And this is no longer even the case. Last night, Cantu was pulled for Helms and Gaby was left in at 1B. So this argument needs to stop.

Yeah, it has ALWAYS been done to improve 3B defense and keep the superior bat in at 1B. Gaby now clearly has the superior bat and, lo and behold, he's the one staying in games.

Here's some +/- info for CC:

Coghlan on the season has cost us -6 runs on defense, entirely because he is a -13 on balls labeled "Deep". This is continuing in the vein of last year's -19 on "Deep".

The good news is he has improved his play to where he can be classified as merely "bad" as opposed to "embaressing" like last year, but he still ranks 29th in the majors in Runs Saves.

The really good news is that he has transformed into a latter day Alfonso Soriano, leading the league in runs saved with his arm despite his issues with the glove. He has saved 4 runs with his arm, saving him from a truly dreadful showing.

And +/- info for Gaby:

The only place Gaby truly rates as poor defensively has been on bunts, where he is rated a D-, having cost the team 2 runs with his poor playing. This makes sense, as Gaby doesn’t strike as a nimble footed defender, further evidencing the necessity of his move from 3B.

However, he ranks as average or better in all other facets, including coming in at +5 on balls to his right. His Runs Saved number of +5 has him as the 6th rated defensive 1B in baseball.

And to round it out, I present to you, the Marlins worst every day player!

On the season, Cantu ranks overall as the 30th best 3B in the league, with a -4 runs saved score. He’s ranked as an “A-“ on bunts, 5th in the league, and ranks as average or better on ground balls hit right at him or to his left.

However, he has cost the team 10 runs on balls to his right, leaving him at a -4 overall despite being average or better at the other aspects.

Those balls hit to his right often go for extra bases too, compounding the turrbleness.

I've never liked the argument that others have to be portrayed as inferior in order to make a usually faulty argument that the player being lionized is superior. I appreciate more than most realize the improvements being made in baseball stats I'm merely pointing out that they are nowhere near definitive yet and as you point out there's always room for adjustment and improvement. What I'm saying is using them to be definitive - it's either this view of baseball and nothing else matters - is at this point not valid. Better, more sophisticated modeling will come along and make today's work obsolete. It happens in almost every facet of mathematical analysis, baseball isn't immune to change.

As for the "front office as a group" and their assessment of Coghlan as an infielder vs outfielder, I like to think I keep up on my reading as well as the next guy, I can't remember anyone saying even relatively recently that the front office prefers Coghlan playing the infield over to where he's playing now. What I've heard most is them heaping accolades on him for his improved play in left.

Yes, I noticed they did not replace Gaby last night, but just like stats cannot include all the factors affecting play, let's face it there's been a hundred posts here recently and Tommy and Rich have mentioned how beat down Cantu appears. And as I said Gaby is getting much better at his job and needs less defensive replacement, I thought i made that clear. I even have gone so far here to suggest one of the ways to get Morrison into the lineup would be at least for a while to relegate Cantu to the bench so both LoMo and Gaby could get the majority of playing time.

And +/- info for Gaby:

On the +/- that baseball reference has Gaby fares pretty poorly. For example, out of the 30 1B with the most innings played, he ranks tied for 23rd best in Rtot/yr with Miguel and Berkman. Strangely Cantu is also tied for 23rd best among 3B.

And +/- info for Gaby:

Hmm... +/- on BillJamesOnline has him ranked 11th.

Anyone notice Gaby hasn't been pulled early since Cantu stopped hitting?

How about that Cantu DH'd every single game in interleague?

Doesn't this say more than the theories being thrown around by those claiming it's about defense?

Both. You trade Jorge, move CC back to his native position of 3B, and put Logan in LF.

Okay. But Gaby is average at best. Logan's glove is far better. We are never going to agree on that because you are a huge Gaby fan. I see no reason to waste a far better 1B glove in the OF unless it is the absolute only option. And we don't know for sure if it is or not. 1B is a much more important defensive position than LF. Ask any IFer. Or pitcher. Remember the team motto.."Pitching, Defense, Speed" You can't keep giving up defense for bats or you end up where we are right now. Nothing more than an also-ran with a crummy defense.

Besides....This is something I am saying I would like to try during games that mean nothing. No predictions, nothing saying this is the way it should be. I would just like to see what he would be like out there and if he can handle it. He must have some kind of arm if he played 3B and catcher. I just fail to see why some are making such a big deal out of it during games that would mean nothing. Even if they were games towards the end of this season when we are out of it.

"Gaby is more than acceptable at 1B. It's the rest of the team that sucks so bad to have us next to last in defense." Sorry, not buying into it.

Flawed reasoning. How many of those IF errors were throwing errors that a good 1B would have gobbled up? May as well add some from the pitchers as well. Not saying all are by any means. But if a strike isn't thrown to 1B and the ball is missed it normally goes as a throwing error. Again, not all the time, just the majority.

I'm not down on a rokkie sporting his BA and OPS. I'm looking for improvement in the field and trying to find a way to still keep his bat in the line up.

Okay. But Gaby is average at best. Logan's glove is far better. We are never going to agree on that because you are a huge Gaby fan. I'm really not that big of a Gaby fan, this is more of a case in contrast, just like how someone 4'6" would find me "really tall". Compared to your slanted position I look like Gaby Sanchez himself.

I'm a "huge Gaby fan" that will never believe you because, instead of going by nothing, I go by scouting reports and statistics? His defense is bad you say, he's being pulled out early is proof. Everyone tells you it's to keep Cantu's bat. Cantu's bat dissapears and shockingly so does Gaby getting pulled. Cantu DH's the first interleauge series and you say it's not because of defense, it's because Cantu needs his rest, despite Cantu saying he didn't and he wanted to play the field. He then DH's the second series and you say it's because he's better equipped mentally, again not because of defense, despite Cantu saying how strange it feels not playing the field. He DH's the third series and I think by this point you gave up on that.

Come on Bob.

Also, as far as 1B being more important than LF, I'd agree. But you know what? A terrible LF and good 1B is not nearly as good as a good LF and a good 1B.

In fairness, and trying to overlook the errors thing, Logan started the season at NOLA still nursing that bad thumb from last season. It's partly why his bat was ineffective this ST. I believe he also went on the DL in NOLA for another injury. But not to use that as an excuse.....Did you watch them go head to head this Spring? If you did then you HAD to see who had the far better glove. It was glaring. Their defense was as lopsided one way as their bats were the other.

But I have said Gaby has gotten better in the field. He's up to average right now in my eyes. But I don't sign their checks. So in the long run, all our opinions mean the same thing. Nada.

Brent (Appleton): Logan Morrison has more walks and a better average, but Freddie Freeman has more HR and 2B and is two years younger. What makes Morrison the better prospect?

John Manuel: The scouts that I have talked to like Morrison's bat a bit better. He does more than control the strike zone; he makes consistent hard contact, and he's showing some pop even coming off his shoulder injury. Also, Morrison's played a bit of left field this year, and one scout I talked to who had seen him do it thought it was a definite option. You can certainly make a case for Freeman between the two, but I think the bats are quite comparable, slight edge to Morrison, and Morrison's a bit more well-rounded. We made the comparison between the two last year as well, as the 1B wing men for Stanton and Heyward, and that has not changed.

You think any of us are satisfied being also rans for the playoffs?

...and blah...blah...blah...

This is called an idea to see if he could work out there. Nothing more. Get used to others not buying into your drivel at all times without question. I would rather be considered an idiot for wanting to try something not being done right now than a self important egotist that thinks his word should be the final say.

End of our discussion.

Uh...

Maybe we could take a poll, or something.

Anyone notice Gaby hasn't been pulled early since Cantu stopped hitting?

How about that Cantu DH'd every single game in interleague?

Doesn't this say more than the theories being thrown around by those claiming it's about defense?

No. Only noticed it since Edwin took over. But then his defense has shown some improvement since the start of the season.

Cantu DHd in IL play because he was the only real option. Who else? Maybe Helms. You don't put a rookie out there to DH.

The last game Fredi managed without the DH, he pulled out Cantu for defense.

And of course you don't put a rookie to DH, even if he's played with the DH since college. His tiny rookie psyche would be crushed like a can in a landfill.
