Gaby or Morrison

And if you've watched the Marlins at all, you'd realize how stupid of any idea it is. That's why you're an idiot, not because you want to try something new. News Flash, everyone on the board wants to try something new because the team is struggling. Some ideas are just far better than others. Gaby in LF, is a bad idea. Also, see Bob above where real talent evaluators, not you or me, say Logan is a "definite option" in LF. Huge.

Glad you supported yourself as usually. Good contribution.

Okay. But Gaby is average at best. Logan's glove is far better. We are never going to agree on that because you are a huge Gaby fan. I see no reason to waste a far better 1B glove in the OF unless it is the absolute only option. And we don't know for sure if it is or not. 1B is a much more important defensive position than LF. Ask any IFer. Or pitcher. Remember the team motto.."Pitching, Defense, Speed" You can't keep giving up defense for bats or you end up where we are right now. Nothing more than an also-ran with a crummy defense.

Besides....This is something I am saying I would like to try during games that mean nothing. No predictions, nothing saying this is the way it should be. I would just like to see what he would be like out there and if he can handle it. He must have some kind of arm if he played 3B and catcher. I just fail to see why some are making such a big deal out of it during games that would mean nothing. Even if they were games towards the end of this season when we are out of it.

I'm really not that big of a Gaby fan, this is more of a case in contrast, just like how someone 4'6" would find me "really tall". Compared to your slanted position I look like Gaby Sanchez himself.

I'm a "huge Gaby fan" that will never believe you because, instead of going by nothing, I go by scouting reports and statistics? His defense is bad you say, he's being pulled out early is proof. Everyone tells you it's to keep Cantu's bat. Cantu's bat dissapears and shockingly so does Gaby getting pulled. Cantu DH's the first interleauge series and you say it's not because of defense, it's because Cantu needs his rest, despite Cantu saying he didn't and he wanted to play the field. He then DH's the second series and you say it's because he's better equipped mentally, again not because of defense, despite Cantu saying how strange it feels not playing the field. He DH's the third series and I think by this point you gave up on that.

Come on Bob.

Also, as far as 1B being more important than LF, I'd agree. But you know what? A terrible LF and good 1B is not nearly as good as a good LF and a good 1B.

Actually, that's what I said the first time too. And you gave the same reasoning of him saying he would rather be playing. So tell me, what NL player have you ever heard that DHd during IL play and said he would rather do that than play his position?

So how do we know Gaby would make a terrible LF? What do we have to go by? What would it hurt to take a look and see? An acceptable LF and very good 1B is better than a good LF and an acceptable 1B. But if he can't handle it, then Gaby stays and Logan goes to LF. At least temporarily(sp).

Okay. Never going to agree. You're a stats guy and I go by what is evident on the field. I also like to look outside the box from time to time and see what could happen. No biggie. I really have no problem with that.

No, you clearly don't. You always go back to "man, when I saw them in Spring Training".

Anyone notice Gaby hasn't been pulled early since Cantu stopped hitting?

How about that Cantu DH'd every single game in interleague?

Doesn't this say more than the theories being thrown around by those claiming it's about defense?

No. Only noticed it since Edwin took over. But then his defense has shown some improvement since the start of the season.

Cantu DHd in IL play because he was the only real option. Who else? Maybe Helms. You don't put a rookie out there to DH.

And the manager of this team is?

Seriously, you spin every argument around so many times, it's embarrassing. You're about 1,000x more stubborn than me, and I'm a stubborn teenager. You're being provided statistics and scouting reports, and you're just here telling us all about your grand observations. Everyone disagrees with you. From the statistics, to the scouting reports, to the current manager of the team...and the organization, as well (since Logan's being tried in LF). Shouldn't that tell you that there's a great chance you might be wrong?

The stats are evident of what has occurred on the field in the past.

Looking outside the box is cool, but sometimes looking outside the box is just wrong. "Emilio Bonifacio will be our future 2B" wrong. Then again, you said that, as well.

Totally off topic, but that is an awesome sigature of the "Miami Thrice" Rab.

And +/- info for Gaby:

The only place Gaby truly rates as poor defensively has been on bunts, where he is rated a D-, having cost the team 2 runs with his poor playing. This makes sense, as Gaby doesn’t strike as a nimble footed defender, further evidencing the necessity of his move from 3B.

However, he ranks as average or better in all other facets, including coming in at +5 on balls to his right. His Runs Saved number of +5 has him as the 6th rated defensive 1B in baseball.

On the +/- that baseball reference has Gaby fares pretty poorly. For example, out of the 30 1B with the most innings played, he ranks tied for 23rd best in Rtot/yr with Miguel and Berkman. Strangely Cantu is also tied for 23rd best among 3B.

Hmm... +/- on BillJamesOnline has him ranked 11th.

And hence my problem with going with stats. Whose do you use? (not you in particular Rab, "you" as in general) The ones that best prove your own point of view and ignore the rest? Kinda like scouting reports?

But bobbob brings up a couple things. Gaby is terrible at bunts. Mainly because I thing he charges too quickly (for lack of a better word, maybe forcefully?)and puts himself out of position too often. And he's not bad to his right. To his left is a problem. I'm not sure I would chalk that up to a problem with nimble footed-ness, but instead to slow reaction time. Or maybe they go hand in hand. The bunt thing can be taught. The other can't.

Actually, these are all supposed to be the same stat, for some reason the sources aren't agreeing.

Secondly, find a scouting report that agrees with you.

Well baseballreference has Rtot, Rtot/yr, Rdrs and Rdrs/yr among others stats with +/-. Rtot/yr and Rdrs/yr take Rtot and Rdrs and convert them into rates. I don't know which of the two (Rtot/yr and Rdrs/yr) is better. When I looked into it I ended up with a headache. On Rdrs/yr Gaby fares better. He's 14th out of the 30 1B with the most innings.

I don't think that's +/- you are talking about. I think that's Total Zone, which isn't the same thing.

To the rational person, yes.

I would rather be considered an idiot for wanting to try something not being done right now than a self important egotist that thinks his word should be the final say.

Uh...

Maybe we could take a poll, or something.

:lol

I would kill for that.

No, you clearly don't. You always go back to "man, when I saw them in Spring Training".

Not to mention that he's had it in for Gaby long before this season. Go back and read his posts. Around the end of 2009, he said that he didn't expect Sanchez to be with the organization by Spring Training 2010.

You simply can't count on him to give you a non-biased evalutation of what he "sees" on the field. Not to mention that he might not know what he's talking about, either. He recently said that Christian Guzman "doesn't get enough attention" as a defender, despite being among the worst in the league.
