Huh? Is this a smokescreen?

Also I just watched inside the Marlins: Chris Coghlan and it showed him this pasty offseason taking groundballs back at Ole Miss and taking grounders in spring training... He definitely does own an infield glove.

So either

A) he must own an infield glove because he took some grounders this past off-season on a college ballfield, or in the alternative someone was not able to identify what kind of glove he was using or even he used someone else's glove. There must be a conspiracy afoot. Hmmm.....

B) he was telling the truth when he said he hadn't taken infield practice since the beginning of spring training (infield glove not required)

C) Ole Miss is now part of the Major Leagues

D) a noted reporter is a liar and made up some very specific quotes for some unknown reason to, I would guess, throw the world off what the Marlins real plans are for Coghlan and at the same time in jeopardize his career and reputation in the process. Must be those new meds he's on.

E) Coghlan is a liar and lied to the reporter, perhaps because it's God's will

F) some people can't admit maybe they were wrong about how easily Cogs, and what the liklihood was, he could slide into the 3B slot this summer

G) There's an alien mothership 2,000ft below an Arctic ice cap controlling Chris Coghlan, who as it turns out, is the evil seed sent here to rule the world with Bud Selig sitting at his right hand

...very tough choices, maybe we need a poll.

H) Or there is some kind of misunderstanding.

Juan Rodriguez chimes in today on Coghlan in the infield on top of Clark Spencer's comments yesterday (or was it the day before???) :

Coghlan won't make the Marlins significantly better at second base the way Emilio Bonifacio would. It's been well over a year now that Coghlan doesn't do any infield work, so he would need to go through a reclamation process. If the Marlins are going to move him back to the infield, they should do so starting in 2011 so he has an offseason to prepare. From a defensive standpoint, the Marlins would love to put Dominguez there [3rd base] right now. His bat remains a big question mark.

When the Marlins trade Cantu, they will call up Luna from AAA for the rest of this year.

In Spring Training next year, it's anyone's guess what will happen.

Bonifacio is a terrible infielder, even at second base.

Look at his record at 2B in the minors and in the majors.

Here's my thinking. Edwin wants bonifacio as his leadoff hitter. Bonifacio started a lot of games at 3rd last year. When cantu is traded do they just stick boner in there at 3rd?

That sure worked out well last year.

If that genius Beinfest had not traded Willingham for Emilio last year, the Marlins would have made the playoffs.

Coghlan would have slid into third very nicely last year.

Well, Juan C is putting the last time CC did any infield work at least 6 months farther back than Clark did, so they don't even agree.

Strange things are happening. Frisaro is going to come out tomorrow and say that CC has never played the infield.

I don't disagree that everyone has a different take on this as this story comes out, but I hope you understand I honestly have no dog in this hunt, I'm just a fan like you and the way I've read the tea leaves these last few months I came to a conclusion that Cogs was not (as part of a grand scheme because sh*t happens and things change) being groomed for an infield spot.

The truth is if he wound up at second or third and was a monster I'd be the happiest Marlins fan in the world. I just didn't and I still don't see it happening.

If the Marlins are throwing in the towel this season (and I honestly think they should but Loria won't even if he doesn't bring in a big name at the deadline), I don't see what the big deal is letting Coghlan play infield this season.

Cantu and Uggla are both terrible fielders. They are among the worst in all of baseball for their respective positions. I cannot imagine Coghlan being substantially worse than either of those two, even if he is rusty. Even if he is a minus infielder in 2010, it won't hurt anything if the Marlins aren't competing and it will give Coghlan an opportunity to show what his abilities are.

This would also open up room for Morrison to play LF or Maybin play CF (when healthy).

I would love nothing more than to have Morrison, Stanton, Maybin and Coghlan (in the infield) playing for most of the second half. Just trade Ross and Cantu for prospects.

I'm not saying you are, I'm just saying there's a ton of strange in all of this. In reading the ol' chicken bones all I see is that it seems the Marlins don't want to put him in the IF this year (which is a shame because I'd love to see LoMo soon), but I'm not really sure what it says about his future. I think it really depends what happens next year. We really don't have enough OF spots for everyone but we do have enough infield spots because Doming isn't ready and is unlikely to be ready next year.

As odd as this may sound, if the Marlins don't see Cogs as an infielder, then they may not see him as part of the future at all. As much as I like what he does at the plate, especially relative to the other hackers up and down and lineup, his production isn't up to par for an LFer on a top team - maybe that's where they spend some of that proposed future payroll flexibility.

The only future Coghlan has with this team is in the infield. He's not good enough defensively and doesn't put up the power numbers needed to be a league average LFer to stay their long term. Coghlan's worth as a future Marlin is in the infield, whether that be at 3B or 2B (although his production seems to show he fits as a 2nd baseman). However, for the next 3 years (until Dominguez is ready), we need to sign Uggla to stay at 2nd and put Coghlan at 3rd. If there was a good cheap 3B option in free agency next year I may have thought differently, but the best option I see next year would be Ty Wigginton, so obviously the market for 3B is scarce.

This is what I want to see this team's starting lineup look like next year.

3B Coghlan

1B Sanchez

SS Ramirez

RF Stanton

2B Uggla

LF Morrison

C Baker/Paulino

CF Maybin

That is a competent starting lineup heading into next season. This team can afford to trade away Ross and Cantu due to the fact we have players who can move into their positions immediately and put up just as good if not better production than they have put up this year.
