Depending on what the Rays are asking for in return, I like both Shields and Garza. Would be nice to get one of those two.

If they were going to go this route, they should of went after Dan Haren, who Anaheim absolutely stole.

Either one would solidify our rotation, and a move to the National League would make them even better. I think I'd prefer Shields, but either one would be nice.

I agree, but not for Morrisson. We need starting pitching, but we don't have to give up one of our best prospects for Shields/Garza.

Morrison isn't going to steal games for you defensively in LF, and his power isn't all that great for a corner outfielder. The Rays could use him at 1B, since they're going to lose Pena.

 

If the Rays give the Marlins a guy like Shields, who has proven to be a quality pitcher capable of giving 200+ innings in the AL East for years now, and is under club control until 2014, you wouldn't give up a Logan Morrison for that? This isn't Mike Stanton we're talking about.

He's more proven than Logan Morrisson, and he's only 26 years old. Plus, Morrisson would net us a lot more in return than Sanchez due to the fact that he's a top prospect.

No one is untouchable. Morrisson can be had for the right price. It just isn't Shields/Garza.

 

And no, it isn't the same as Bruce and Stubbs. Sanchez is having success right now. You don't trade him over Morrisson because Morrisson has more potential. If anything, you trade Morrisson because he will net you a better player.

Its a different situation. They traded for Urbina in the middle of a playoff race. On the other hand, they kind of rolled the dice on who to trade, Stokes or Gonzalez. Do you really want to see them get it wrong again?

Shields: 4 years, 32.25m (avg 8.1m per year)

 

Shields has an extra year of control and still makes 10m less than Haren does. Shields also doesn't start making good money until after the stadium opens.

 

Also, different pitchers = different results obviously, but if you look at Haren's AL time v.s. Shields AL time

K/9: 7.2/7.3

BB/9: 2.1/1.9

HR/9: 1.1/1.2

 

Haren saw a massive spike in peripherals due to facing weaker line ups and a pitcher instead of a DH. Shields probably would too, especially then considering Haren pitched in the AL West and Shields in the AL East
