Coghlan to Have Surgery

Featured Replies

He could let the knee heal on it own it be ready by spring training. Probably.

I don't know why you would say probably, you don't have his test results or know how bad his knee is. And I don't know how much you know about orthopedics either.

I sure as hell have no idea.

I saw a quote from him within the last week or so saying he was going to have to have the surgery in the off season regardless. He was just hoping to be able to play by the end of this season to help the team out. Even at that time it sounded more like a PC statement. So this really comes as no surprise and is the best idea.

I would hope there is serious competition at 3B during ST. The FO should have learned from ST '09 not to just hand any position over and simply hope everything works out.

Because Bonifacio has done so well and Gaby has sucked so badly? Or are you upset that Maybin started in CF?

And clearly, they are very open to ST competitions. And when they gave it to Bonifacio because he "won" it, he has terrihorripathetiriffic.

You do know this is 2010 and not 2009. Right? What competitions were there going in ST of 2009? Going into that ST Maybin was handed the CF position and Gaby 1B. Maybin showed he wasn't ready early on in the season. Because of injuries, or most likely because he just wasn't ready. Gaby showed he wasn't ready in ST '09 even tho the jpb was his alone to lose, and spent most of the season in AAA getting ready. Bonifacio wasn't bat ready to start in 2009. Nor did he have the experience at 3B to be our everyday starter. It was the lack of competition that deemed those moves. Cantu had to move to 1B and nobody else stepped up to take 3B other than Boni. Not a good move, but there was no Plan B. I would like to know how anybody sees it differently.

I think you have that right.

If there wasn't a competition of some sort, he couldn't have lost. But that's just arguing semantics.

Are you saying you would have wanted them to have brought in some other players as from outside the roster as competition? With our budget, that makes for Minor-League free agents only, just about.

We got EXTREMELY lucky with Cantu; we could have just as easily had a bunch of guys who turned into nothing that year, and the same may have been if we brought in Minor-League FAs to compete with Gaby last year. Most of them still probably would have sucked. Maybe they would have been better than EB, maybe not.

If ST '09 showed anything it's that they shouldn't hand over a spot based entirely on Spring Training.

Chris Coghlan rehabs following surgery

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Florida Marlins left fielder Chris Coghlan underwent left knee surgery Wednesday, and is beginning rehabilitation after being hurt during a victory celebration.

Coghlan The reigning NL Rookie of the Year had surgery to repair a torn meniscus by medical director Dr. Lee Kaplan in Miami. He is scheduled to begin rehab immediately.

Marlins interim manager Edwin Rodriguez said that the team hoped Coghlan would respond well enough to play late this season, but he wasn't counting on it.

Coghlan hurt himself July 25 delivering a celebratory pie to the face of teammate Wes Helms after a game-winning hit against Atlanta. He was hitting .268 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 91 games, after hitting .321 last season.

Well we already knew he was going to be out for the season. This just confirms it. I hope he recovers well and is ready for next Spring.

Let's just hope Coghlan doesn't partake in any kind of carnival pie throwing competitions this offseason.

I'd hate to see how he is in a pie eating contest.
