August 8, 201015 yr Chris Coghlan's season is over. The 2009 NL Rookie of the Year will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The procedure will be performed by Marlins physician, Dr. Lee Kaplan, on Wednesday. Recovery time is four to eight weeks. Coghlan's sophomore year in the big leagues ends with a .268 batting average and .335 on-base percentage. It was a rough season for the 25-year-old, who will be converting from left field to third base when Spring Training for 2011 opens. Coghlan suffered the knee injury during a postgame celebration after the Marlins beat the Braves on July 25. Wes Helms delivered the walk-off hit that day, and the team rejoiced. While Helms was being interviewed, Coghlan leaped to smash a towel full of shaving cream into his teammate's face. He landed awkwardly on his knee, and went on the disabled list the next day. Earlier in his season, Coghlan dealt with a sore oblique after making a diving catch against the Reds on April 13. Shortly after the All-Star Break, he bruised his ribs while making a diving catch against the Nationals. He missed some games after each incident. The Marlins were planning on switching Coghlan to third base after Jorge Cantu was traded. That transition is expected next year. -- Joe Frisaro It's for the best really. We're not going anywhere this season.
August 8, 201015 yr Author So its a sure thing that Coghlan will play 3B next year? I believe so. As of right now, our offense will look like this (not batting order): 1B: Gaby 2B: Uggla 3B: Coghlan SS: Hanley LF: Morrison CF: Ross/Maybin RF: Stanton C: Baker/Paulino
August 8, 201015 yr Sophomore Jinx! He just couldn't really get going this season anyway. Will he be 3rd base or 2nd base? Dominguez may be ready by july next season
August 8, 201015 yr Good move to go ahead and get the surgery now as there is no point risking anything cause our season is over. Also should be an easier transition to 3B by doing so in Spring Training rather than doing it on the fly in the last few weeks of this season.

I don't think he will be either, but the possibility exists.

But he might be, which is why it's Ross/Maybin.
August 8, 201015 yr He could let the knee heal on it own it be ready by spring training. Probably. I don't know why you would say probably, you don't have his test results or know how bad his knee is. And I don't know how much you know about orthopedics either. I sure as hell have no idea.

I sure as hell have no idea but I'm willing to take James Andrews' word for it. I just know of former NFL player Jimmy Hitchcock. He played his entire career with no ACL in either knee. So yeah it can be done, although his injuries occurred in high school and his family was poor.

Also, to quote Hitchcock: Then they would build up an incredible tolerance for pain. "Some days they don't hurt at all," says Hitchcock, "and some days the pain is excruciating." Yeah, that's just a terrible idea.
August 8, 201015 yr I remember reading that quote. Also, seems he got arrested for assault and robbery back in 08. Wowzers.
August 8, 201015 yr Healing on its own is not impossible, merely unlikely. "Meniscus" is just the fancy medical word for the cartilage between the femur and the tibia. A spacer and shock-absorber. Tough stuff. Most of which has no blood supply, which is why it usually doesn't heal by itself. Which is why professional athletes usually have surgery to repair the problem. As we age and it degenerates, or you otherwise tear up your knees and wind up with pieces of your meniscus floating around, it's called arthritis. :lol
August 8, 201015 yr He played his entire career with no ACL in either knee. Ouch. An ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a different, but related animal to the various meniscii in the knee. Playing (or even walking around) without an ACL has to be miserable.

Playing (or even walking around) without an ACL has to be miserable. Meniscus is cartilege which prevents bone to rest upon bone and if it is gone the two leg bones grind on each other. The ACL (anterior and the other posterior) connects the two leg bones together and if it is torn/severed another ligament is cut from elsewhere and screwed :thumbdown into both bones so they can remain connected. Interesting more women than men do it and usually in basketball, skiing, soccer.

Playing (or even walking around) without an ACL has to be miserable. Yep. Like a poster quoted, Hitchcock said somedays it would be fine and others not. The arthritis and skin I think kept his Knees together, if I recall correctly. No idea if he got surgery after his career, but according to a message board post quoting an article, he got into cop trouble in 08.
August 9, 201015 yr Glad to see they didn't try and make him play in attempts to salvage this season.
August 9, 201015 yr I had a squad leader in the Army who had this injury. It was bone on bone, he could only do upper body PT for like 2 years and got medically discharged eventually(he was still able to road march to a degree, but running was nearly impossible for him).

I don't know why you would say probably, you don't have his test results or know how bad his knee is. And I don't know how much you know about orthopedics either. I sure as hell have no idea. I saw a quote from him within the last week or so saying he was going to have to have the surgery in the off season regardless. He was just hoping to be able to play by the end of this season to help the team out. Even at that time it sounded more like a PC statement. So this really comes as no surprise and is the best idea. I would hope there is serious competition at 3B during ST. The FO should have learned from ST '09 not to just hand any position over and simply hope everything works out.

Because Bonifacio has done so well and Gaby has sucked so badly? Or are you upset that Maybin started in CF? And clearly, they are very open to ST competitions. And when they gave it to Bonifacio because he "won" it, he has terrihorripathetiriffic.
