If there is one spot for Omar Infante or Chris Coghlan, at 2B, who do you think the Marlins pick?

Well that's just not the case. There is a spot for both of them, but in terms of 2B it looks like the Marlins are chosing Infante. With Chris Coghlan at CF. Honestly, I think Coghlan has become so detatched from his original 2B position.

 

I just dont know why everyone cant accept that Infante is more than likely a sure-fire position cover as opposed to spare parts used to plug up the gap.

Well, my point is that CC's not at all the odd man out. If that was the case, you, I, and Stephen Fry all know that it would be Omar who was out.

 

The Marlins aren't choosing Omar to play 2B, they're choosing CC to play CF. They're choosing CC because he's probably the most athletic player on the team short of Boni, Hanley, and maybe Stanton, plus has the experience of playing the OF.

I think it might be fair to say there's no roster spot for C.C. (which would bring a trade).

 

But as he is here, there will be a way to fit him in the lineup.

I do believe you are right. I believe it's Gaby. I just don't know if they didn't want to lose his bat, couldn't find the right trade, wanted to test the others in ST, or think Perry can perform his IF magic. Probably a combination of some of those, and maybe some I didn't think of. What I do know is that I'm not comfortable with our OF as it is on paper right now. And with a "new" OF coach helping them along dosen't sweeten that up at all.

If the Marlins (who have watched Coghlan playing 2B for several years in their minor leagues) thought that he could be a Major League Second Baseman, they would have established him there right after the Uggla trade. Then, if Dominguez was deemed not ready, Infante could play third for the one year left on his contract and Dominguez would take over 3B in 2012.

 

But they did not. And the reason must be that they don't see Coghlan as the answer at 2B. Now YOU may think Coghlan should be at 2B, and most of this board may think that Coghlan can play 2B but the folks that matter do not.

 

So, again, unless Sanchez is traded and LoMo moves to 1B, Coghlan's ONLY long term chance at a starting position is in CF. Which he realizes and the FO realizes and why he and they want to try him out there.

 

And it follows that if the Marlins get a starting CF (with the "Nunez money") then Coghlan is out of the everyday lineup.

 

It does not take a lot of intelligence to figure this out, but evidently even such a low bar is too much for you.

The only reason Coghlan is in CF is because we have no one else to play CF and he can fake it well. Plain and simple. If we got a natural CF tomorrow, Coghlan goes to 2B and Infante becomes the first guy off the bench.

And how exactly can you establish a guy at a position when baseball isn't being played? Unless they're doing it behind our backs, it's still the offseason as far as I can tell. If you mean they would have told us it was him, how can they? Then we have no CF, especially with Dominguez not ready yet (I don't care that he was already named the starting 3B, I still say he's not ready and camp will prove it) and Boni having to fill in at 3B? Right now, Coghlan is the only thing close to a starting CF the team has. That doesn't mean he's going to be there forever.

There's a difference between 2B being your natural position and you being defensively sound at it. I don't think 2B is Infante's natural position, and I'm pretty sure he's a better defender than Coghlan would be there.

Or perhaps he's a cheap, solid player, and not the second coming of Mike Jacobs as you often make him out to be.

That's hocum. What your fancy biased statistics didn't tell you is that Gaby Sanchez once gave BroncoBob the finger in traffic and immediately became expendable.

Gaby proved himself enough IMO to keep that 1st base spot.

 

Anyways, this is an awesome problem to have. Other than perhaps not having a good defensive CF option, the batting lineup... solid.
