The Marlins have signed right-hander Shawn Hill to a minor league contract, reportsMLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Hill is invited to Spring Training and will earn $600K if he makes the club.

Hill, 29, broke into the majors with Montreal in 2004 and most recently made four starts for Toronto last season. The Jays released Hill to make room for Rajai Davis in November. Hill has a career 4.74 ERA and a 2.04 K/BB ratio in 44 Major League starts and has undergone two Tommy John surgeries in his young career. Hill pitched well in both the majors and minors for the Jays last year, and if he stays healthy, could be a nice high-upside addition to Florida's staff.

Wow, the Marlins mean business.

I got Shawn and Rich Hill mixed up when I saw this. Not that it makes much difference which one it is.....

Completely for depth, unless something drastic happens, he has little or no chance to make the club, but I love the idea of having him in AAA as backup.

Sounds to me more like an issued challenge to the players... fight for your spot (although yeah, for depth mostly) .

Also, maybe he looks good in ST and can be a LR, allowing them to put Sanania in AAA to continue getting consistent starts.

I think Sanabia will be getting starts in AAA no matter what. Badenhop will likely fill the LR role. We have enough BP depth (finally) where we don't have to use Badenhop in the 8th anymore and use him in his better suited role - Long Relief.

There's a ST battle for the LR spot?

The only way Hill makes the team is if someone gets injured; as a matter of fact, it's going to take more than one pitcher getting injured, really.

At best, he's 7th on the depth chart in terms of starters, and 9th in terms of relievers - and that's only if he has a Clay Hensley-like Spring Training.

His chances are slim to none; just a depth signing.

The Marlins actually have relievers to trade.

If they felt like going with an extra reliever, they'd have eight guys not named Shawn Hill who had success in the big leagues, as recently as last year.

The BINGO statement. Although it can be passed off as a signing for depth, it seems more like setting themselves up for a contingency plan if some position players don't work out in ST and a trade is needed.

I honestly would rather not trade Hill or any other quality reliever who doesn't make the initial 25 man squad. Because the reality is this - injuries are going to happen to your bullpen. There are 7 guys there, and odds are, most of them are going to go down with injuries at one point or another.

Now I would MUCH rather have reassurance that we have someone like Shawn Hill and Alex Sanabia ready to be called up and take the place rather than the Jay Buentes and Chris Lerouxs of the world.

I'd rather have a healthy Shawn Hill than Chris Volstad in my rotation.

Career better K rates, lot better BB rates - and obviously better K/BB, 1.68 v.s. 2.04, better HR rates. Career FIP of 4.02 for Hill compared to Volstad's 4.60.

Of course, a healthy Shawn Hill very likely will never happen.

Volstad is also 5 years younger.

so see if he can stop sucking in AAA

Last I checked Gaby dosen't play CF or 3B.
