canada-marlin24
Yes the guy had a pretty good rookie season but you have got to be kidding me if you think that season is worth a potential 35.1 million. thats a joke! the guy have up 24 home runs and had a 1.35 WHIP and .255 batting average against and an ERA slightly over 4. Those are some not some unbelieveable numbers which i think would be what is needed to warrant that type of contract so early. not saying he wont get better but thats a pretty quick trigger to reward somebody. not that i care for the rays anyway. fanofthefish
The only thing more surprising then this contract is that Raysfan1998 didn't start the topic :thumbup I kid, I kid Davis was the Rays top pitching prospect going into last year and he was decent enough throughout the year. I think more than anything the Rays are trying to keep a nucleus of players with these long term contracts like Longoria's so they'll able to compete in the short term and maybe afford to pick up a big player if they're in contention later on. Iowa
How about paying 126 mil for someone to bat 2nd?
Rabbethan
It's only 12.6M guaranteed over 4 seasons. An average of 3.15M is more than a cost controlled player would normally be paid, but they are getting 2 arbi years for that. If he falls on his face and busts, that's not great but it's nothing that'll kill a team's payroll. And then, on top of that, they have 3 years worth of team options afterwards. Great contract for the Rays.

Actually, it's just another smart deal by the Rays front office. The potential reward is much greater than the potential risk; they need to lock up their players early, if they want to keep them. True CRaysball
I think the OP is not look at things from a small market POV. If the Rays are gonna sign a potentially lights out pitcher, they should sign him now before he gets big and "I deserve more money" thinking takes over. The OP is looking at things from a small market POV, I just think he doesn't understand the contract.
