It is just Twitter talk.

It's internet talk.

Lazy internet talk. Tonite is dumb people spelling for 'tonight'. It's one letter off. It's almost purposely misspelling it for the sake of being on the internet.

also can we change the name of "bullpen" to "dog pound"?

As long as the food at the stadium doesn't taste like dog food, I'm all for the dog-theme heh

Yay team! We won and its Puppy Power! I told you we would win and now we are going on a streak! Cheer for Victory again tonight.

By the way, which inning was that Vin Scully story in? I have MLB.TV and go and watch it over there.

People were spelling tonight tonite long before the internet existed. Its more of a slang spelling then a mispelling. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tonite I agree with your sentiment on lazy internet talk, but this particular word mangle-ation predates the internet.

ha they even mentioned that LoMo tweet on sportscenter this morning.

Jack's awesome.

Man I hope the team can turn it around. Feels awesome to get a win, would love to see them win 3 or 4 in a row here, get them feeling confident again.

It is good to see Javy "pitching" again. He's not dominating certainly but he's at least figuring out a way to battle, get out of some jams, and keep the team in the game. Velocity seems a little bit better the past few games too.

Well of course you wouldn't care. You're part of the generation that's making the internet dumb.

Dr. Beinfest is too. But he's a nerd.:p

There's a word for that, I just can't come up with it at this time. Spelling things the way they sound. Like "tough" spelled out "tuff" or "phone" as "fone."

BTW I like that "word mangle-ation" term.

That's funny.

But what's funnier is that you said "tonite" was ONE letter off from "tonight." Must be some kind of South Florida math.

Actually, that was me.

Tonight = 7

Tonite = 6

You misinterpret what I mean by 1 letter off. Not 1 letter difference, but rather one letter off of the total number of letters needed to spell 'tonight'.

Basically, it's hardly shorthand.

"Phonetics" maybe? Which is a little strange seeing it should be spelled "fonetiks."

Phonetics, exactly.

There's a large dose of intellectual laziness combined with an even larger dose of ignorance. Spelling has become totally atrocious in the last 50 years, thanks to the hacks at the main teacher's unions, the NEA and the AFT.

As Albert Shanker, former president of the AFT famously said, "I'll start representing students when they start paying dues."

English usage and spelling slowly but constantly change and always have, but what's gone on spelling-wise in the last few decades is shocking. And the evidence of it is all over every internet board, in abundance.

Take "voilà," for instance. Voilà is a contraction of the French "vois là," or "see there." Usually rendered in English as "voila."

I've seen it on this board as "walah" and "wala."

:lol

Then there's the constant misuse of "there," "their" and "they're" and a hundred other similar examples.

Oh, well, so it goes. Spelling continues to degenerate, but baseball goes on as ever.

I thought it was pop culture that caused it. And Ebonics. Schools have been bad for 50 years? Really? I thought it was just since the 90's. Is 50 years ago when the teacher's unions started? I see what you did there then. What you see in text messaging is much worse than what you see on internet message boards.

The jist of what I said was that the degradation (not just spelling) has been going on for the last 50 years. Which encompasses the rise of the teachers' unions. Lots more money across the board accompanied by constantly declining performance. The evidence of which is extant on every board on the internet, including this one.

Other than that, don't try to put words in my mouth.

I don't think there is a degradation in anything, I think it's just that you can see it now more with the spread of mass media. Literacy rates are higher than they were 50 years ago (and lets not even talk about 100 years ago).

I mean, lets be real here. I consider myself a protector of the English language but to pretend this is something that has come about recently is silly.
